The clinical and radiographical features, and the results of treatment of 41 dogs and 10 cats with traumatic injuries of the spine are reviewed. There was a poor correlation between the degree of vertebral displacement and the neurological condition of the animals. Eighteen cases were treated conservatively, 16 were treated surgically and 17 were destroyed. Surgery was

for animals with either severe or progressive neurological dysfunction, and vertebral body plating and hemilaminectomy were the commonest procedures. Of the cases treated conservatively 94.4 per cent showed significant neurological improvement compared with 87.5 per cent of those treated surgically.

Embryo transfer was carried out on nine Texel donor ewes, one of them on two occasions, over two breeding seasons (1980 and 1981). The donors were prepared for superovulation on the farm by two different regimens and the recipients were also synchronised on the farm of origin. Surgery was carried out on donors and recipients at a veterinary practice and the techniques of anaesthesia, surgery and embryo transfer are described. Superovulation was variable and more than two ovulations were seen in only four of the 10 ewes. Forty-one corpora lutea were produced by the 10 ewes and 27 embryos were recovered. Twenty-one embryos were transferred to recipients and 14 lambs were produced. All the 10 donors except one produced lambs themselves. The value, economics and welfare aspects of the technique of embryo transfer under practice conditions are discussed and it is concluded that the procedure should not be carried out routinely but

Sixty cattle (12 first season and 48 second season grazing animals) were allocated to three groups according to age and bodyweight. Each group was divided into "control" and "treated" subgroups. Before turnout, a morantel sustained release bolus (MSRB) was administered to each animal in the "treated" category. The groups were moved from field to field according to the farmer's normal rotational grazing policy. Each field was, however, divided into two equal halves, one of which was

for the MSRB treated cattle, while the other was used exclusively for the controls. Severe parasitic gastroenteritis occurred in the first season controls during early September, while milder disease affected the untreated animals in the smaller of the second season groups. No gastrointestinal disease was apparent in the corresponding MSRB treated cattle. A mild outbreak of parasitic bronchitis occurred in the first year controls during October; there was evidence of less sever lungworm infection in the matching MSRB treated animals. The larger second season group showed no signs of parasitic disease.

In bacteria, the major function of homologous genetic recombination is recombinational DNA repair. This is not a process
reserved
only for rare double-strand breaks caused by ionizing radiation, nor is it limited to situations in which the SOS response has been induced. Recombinational DNA repair in bacteria is closely tied to the cellular replication systems, and it functions to repair damage at stalled replication forks, Studies with a variety of

mutants, carried out under normal aerobic growth conditions, consistently suggest that at least 10-30% of all replication forks originating at the bacterial origin of replication are halted by DNA damage and must undergo recombinational DNA repair. The actual frequency may be much higher. Recombinational DNA repair is both the most complex and the least understood of bacterial DNA repair processes. When replication forks encounter a DNA lesion or strand break, repair is mediated by an adaptable set of pathways encompassing most of the enzymes involved in DNA metabolism. There are five separate enzymatic processes involved in these repair events: (1) The replication fork assembled at OriC stalls and/or collapses when encountering DNA damage. (2) Recombination enzymes provide a complementary strand for a lesion isolated in a single-strand gap, or reconstruct a branched DNA at the site of a double-strand break. (3) The phi X174-type primosome (or repair primosome) functions in the origin-independent reassembly of the replication fork. (4) The XerCD site-specific recombination system resolves the dimeric chromosomes that are the inevitable by-product of frequent recombination associated with recombinational DNA repair. (5) DNA excision repair and other repair systems eliminate lesions left behind in double-stranded DNA. The RecA protein plays a central role in the recombination phase of the process. Among its many activities, RecA protein is a motor protein, coupling the hydrolysis of ATP to the movement of DNA branches.

Dental disorders are one of the top-ranking clinical domains in equine practice. Scintigraphy has emerged as a useful diagnostic imaging modality for equine dental diseases. There is a paucity of the normal scintigraphic uptake and its correlation with age. This prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and pilot-designed study aimed to describe the radioisotope uptake (RU) patterns of the

crown and periodontal bone of the maxillary and mandibular cheek teeth (CT) in clinically sound horses and to evaluate the age effect on RU. For this purpose, 60 horses that underwent a bone scintigraphy for reason unrelated to head were included and divided equally into four age groups. Regions of interests (ROIs) were positioned around alveolar and periodontal bone of each maxillary and mandibular CT including their reserve crown, and a reference ROI positioned at the mandibular ramus. The count per pixel of each ROI was measured using a dedicated software and the RU ratio relative to the reference region was calculated. The results showed that the maxillary and mandibular CT had a standard RU pattern, where it increased from rostral to caudal, and peaked in the middle of dental arcades and decreased slightly towards the last CT. The maxillary CT had a higher RU compared with the mandibular CT, and there was no significant difference in the maxillary and mandibular CT uptake between age groups. This information may aid veterinarians evaluating potentially abnormal dental scintigraphy.

The density, or specific gravity (SG), of organisms has numerous important implications for their form, function, ecology, and other facets of beings living and dead, and it is especially necessary to apply SG values that are as accurate as practical when estimating their masses which is itself a critical aspect of living things. Yet a comprehensive review and analysis of this notable subject of anatomy has never been conducted and published. This is such an effort, being as extensive as possible with the data on hand, bolstered by some additional observations, and new work focusing on extinct animals who densities are least unknown: pterosaurs and dinosaurs with extensive pneumatic complexes, including the most sophisticated effort to date for a sauropod. Often difficult to determine even via direct observation, techniques for obtaining the best possible SG data are explained and utilized, including observations of floating animals. Neutral SG (NSG) is proposed as the most important value for tetrapods with respiratory tracts of fluctuating volume. SGs of organisms range from 0.08 to 2.6, plant tissues from 0.08 to 1.39, and vertebrates from about 0.75 (some giant pterosaurs) to 1.2 (those with heavy armor and/or skeletons). Tetrapod NSGs tend to be somewhat higher than widely thought, especially those theropod and sauropod dinosaurs and pterosaurs with air-sacs because diverticula volume is usually measured at maximum inhalation in birds.
