In the avian heart the right and left atrioventricular (AV) valves not only exhibit their own special anatomical characteristics, but they also are in close proximity to the conduction system. The right AV valve is a single, spiral plane of myocardium, in remarkable contrast to the fibrous structure characteristic of the mammalian tricuspid valve. A ring of Purkinje tissue encircles the avian right AV orifice and connects to the muscular valve. The chicken has no crista supraventricularis, its right AV valve serving that function as well as opening and closing the right AV orifice. The left AV valve consists of three leaflets instead of the two typical of mammalian hearts. Its anterior and posterior leaflets are small; its large aortic (medial) leaflet merges with the bases of both the left and noncoronary cusps of the aortic valve by fibrous tissue, resembling that of the mammalian heart. However, unlike in mammals, there is a slim cylinder of continuous myocardium coursing parallel to this fibrous junction. This unusual arc of myocardium in the chicken serves to complete an entire subaortic ring of myocardium and is thus potentially capable of constricting the outflow tract of the chicken's left ventricle. The middle bundle branch connects with both the muscle arch and the AV Purkinje ring. Thus the myocardium in or near both AV valves (and the left ventricular outflow tract) in the chicken heart is so arranged that it may receive direct early activation from the conduction system.

Enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP)-labeled bone marrow (BM) cells were transplanted into syngeneic C57BL/6 (wild-type) mice to investigate the distribution pattern, immunohistochemical characteristics, three-dimensional structure, and ultrastructure of the BM-derived cells in the mouse cornea using a fluorescence microscope, a confocal laser scanning microscope, and a transmission electron microscope. This study provided direct evidence that two morphologically distinct types of BM-derived cells were distributed in the mouse cornea. The majority of the GFP+ cells showed a flattened polygonal form with obtuse angles and these cells were distributed in the corneal stroma. The other type was the GFP+ cells demonstrating slim cell bodies with long and extremely thin dendrites and which were distributed in the corneal epithelium. The immunohistochemical characteristics and ultrastructure of BM-derived cells suggest that most of these cells have a macrophage lineage, whereas some cells in the corneal stroma do not. Interestingly, the direct intimate contact between GFP-labeled BM derived cells and non-GFP-labeled resident cells within the corneal stroma were also clearly visualized at the fine structural level. These data provide new and more detailed insight into the nature of BM-derived cells in the cornea.

Dr. Joseph Black had at one time, a house near us to the west. He was a striking and beautiful person; tall, very thin, and cadaverously pale; his hair carefully powdered, though there was little of it except what was collected in a long thin queue; his eyes dark, clear and large, like deep pools of pure water. He wore black speckless clothes, silk stockings, silver buckles, and either a slim green umbrella, or a genteel brown cane. The general frame and air were feeble and slender. The wildest boy respected Black. No lad could be irreverent toward a man so pale, so gentle, so elegant and so illustrious. So he glided, like a spirit, through our rather mischievous sportiveness, unharmed. He died seated, with a bowl of milk upon his knee, of which his ceasing to be did not spill a drop; a departure which it seemed, after the event, might have been foretold of this attenuated philosophical gentleman.

The unique features of solution-processed quantum dots (QDs) including emission tunability in the visible range, high-quality saturated color and outstanding intrinsic stability in environment are highly desired in various application fields. Especially, for the preparation of wide color gamut displays, QDs with high photoluminescence quantum yield are deemed as the optimal fluorescent emitter that has been utilized in the backlight for liquid crystal display. Nevertheless, the commercialization of electrically driven self-emissive quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) display is the ultimate target due to its merits of high contrast, slim configuration and compatibility with flexible substrate. Through the great efforts devoted to material engineering and device configuration, astonishing progresses have been made in device performance, giving the QLED technology a great chance to compete with other counterparts for next-generation displays. In this review, we retrospect the development roadmap of QLED technology and introduce the essential principles in the QLED devices. Moreover, we discuss the key factors that affect the QLED efficiency and lifetime. Finally, the advances in device architectures and pixel patterning are also summarized.
