Clinical observations on the use of BCG cell wall fraction in oil for treating seven horses with periocular sarcoids and five horses with sarcoids in other regions are described. Therapy was successful when used for periocular or solitary and smaller sarcoids. For sarcoids previously treated with cryosurgery, therapy appeared to be less efficient. A horse with a
sarcoid
on the stifle developed a septic gonitis due to necrosis of the
sarcoid
tissue adjacent to the joint. Sarcoids of the axilla appeared to be more aggressive than sarcoids at other locations and did not respond favourably to this form of therapy.

Molecular investigations on 18 naturally occurring
sarcoid
tumors removed from donkeys identified papillomaviral DNA homologous to bovine papillomavirus (BPV)-2 DNA under stringent conditions, in all the samples. Restriction endonuclease analysis of 15 of the tumours demonstrated papillomaviral DNA similar to BPV-1 and BPV-2. The type of DNA was not specific to either the site or the type of lesion. The analysis of the nucleotide base sequence of a cloned papillomaviral element from a
sarcoid
showed that the isolate was 96 and 98 per cent homologous to BPV-1 in the L1 and E5 open reading frames, respectively. It was concluded that the disease in the donkey is similar to that in the horse and that the E5 open reading frame may be involved in oncogenesis in the
sarcoid
.

An epidemiological study of equine
sarcoid
in a population of 4126 donkeys showed that the peak incidence of the disease was 15.2 cases per 100 animal-years and occurred in animals in their fourth year of life. The crude incidence of the disease was 0.6 cases per 100 animal-years. The disease occurred most frequently in younger, male animals during their first five years in the population. The lesions were observed most commonly in the paragenital region. Pre-entry quarantine procedures did not appear to play a significant role in the spread of the disease but there was an indication that close in-contact animals were more likely to have sarcoids than animals in the general population. This suggested that a transmissible agent might have been involved in the aetiopathogenesis or that the animals had encountered some event that had predisposed them to the disease.

Lymphocytes in the bronchoalveolar space are routinely obtained and examined in lung diseases such as asthma or
sarcoidosis
. In a pig model, labeled lymphocytes were found in regional lymph nodes after intrabronchial instillation, indicating that reentry of lymphocytes from the bronchoalveolar space into the body is possible. In the present study, the route and kinetics of the reentry of bronchoalveolar lymphocytes were investigated in a congenic rat model using immunohistochemistry on cryostat and semithin sections and confocal laser scanning microscopy. As early as 15 min after intratracheal instillation lymphocytes were found to leave the bronchoalveolar space by transmigration through alveolar but not bronchial epithelium and were observed in interstitial alveolar tissue. At 6 hr after intratracheal instillation, T and B lymphocytes appeared in the draining lymph nodes of the lung with an increase after 24 and 48 hr. The kinetic pattern clearly differed in nondraining lymph nodes and other organs. After 6 hr, only single cells were found in nondraining lymph nodes, spleen, and blood with a slight increase after 24 hr, and only occasionally were single cells seen in the liver, thymus, or Peyer's patches 24 and 48 hr after instillation. In conclusion, T and B lymphocytes can leave the alveolar space by reentry into the lung tissue through alveolar epithelium. They reach regional lymph nodes by means of lymphatic vessels and are then distributed all over the body to rejoin the systemic immune system. Coming into contact with environmental antigens, these lymphocytes could perform an important function in the lung immune system and might be a target for inhalative therapy.

Treatment of the equine
sarcoid
has posed a significant challenge to clinicians for years and many different methods have been tried with varying success, including ionising radiation. The aim of this study was to review the efficacy of iridium-192 interstitial brachytherapy for the treatment of eight periocular sarcoids and 15 non-ocular sarcoids on 18 horses. All the periocular sarcoids and 13 of the 15 non-ocular sarcoids were treated successfully.

Twelve Faculty of Homeopathy veterinarians recorded data systematically at 777 consecutive homeopathic appointments for horses over a period of 12 months. A spreadsheet enabled the recording of information, which included the date of appointment; horse and owner identity (anonymised); sex of horse; main medical problem treated; whether the condition was chronic or acute; whether the appointment was new or a follow-up; owner-assessed clinical outcome on a seven-point scale, ranging from -3 to +3, compared with the first appointment; homeopathic medicine(s) prescribed; and whether any conventional or other complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) was being used concurrently to treat the condition. Data from 289 horses comprised a total of 305 individual conditions identified as chronic in nature, of which 234 had a follow-up assessment. At the final appointment for chronic cases during the study period, 4.3 per cent were receiving conventional medication and 17.1 per cent were being given another CAM treatment in addition to homeopathy. The eight chronic conditions most frequently treated with homeopathy were: arthritis, headshaking, laminitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sweet itch, dermatitis,
sarcoidosis
and Cushing's syndrome.

Based on the anecdotally reported eradication of a
sarcoid
using aciclovir cream, the curative potential of this ointment was investigated in 22
sarcoid
-affected horses referred to the Equine Clinic Tillysburg, Austria, between 2006 and 2009.
Sarcoid
disease was diagnosed by clinical examination and bovine papillomavirus types 1 and 2 from intact skin and tumour tissue. As nine horses had more than one lesion, a total of 47 sarcoids were treated by daily topical application of aciclovir 5 per cent cream for a period of two to six months; in four horses, surgical tumour ablation was performed before treatment. Disease parameters, including the tumour type, number, location and size, were recorded before and after aciclovir therapy. All 47 (100 per cent) of the sarcoids responded to treatment, with complete tumour regression observed for 32 (68 per cent) lesions and no recurrences reported thus far. Incomplete resolution was observed for 15 (32 per cent) lesions, probably due to their thickness. Aciclovir is proposed to be routinely used for the treatment of mild-type sarcoids and as an adjuvant therapeutic agent in combination with surgery.
