Bovine papilloma virus (BPV) was extracted from five cattle each affected with only one of five morphologically distinct lesion types. When inoculated into experimental calves either by scarification or intradermal injection, the BPV extracts produced lesions macroscopically and microscopically similar to those from which individual extracts were made. Fetal bovine cells, transformed in vitro with BPV, failed to produce fibromas, fibropapillomas or papillomas when inoculated into experimental calves. When calves inoculated with virus or BPV transformed cells were challenged with the five original BPV extracts, a differential immunity was demonstrated, while control calves were susceptible to all extracts. Post mortem examination revealed the presence of upper alimentary tract papillomas in three of eight calves forming one group. These results suggest that different strains of BVP, causing morphologically separable lesion types, exist. There may be additional BPV variants causing fibropapillomas of the teat and anogenital regions of cattle. The inoculation of BPV transformed fetal bovine cells conferred a relative immunity to later challenge with some but not all BPV extracts.

Eleven cases of neoplasia which involved the middle ear cavity of dogs are recorded. Eight of the tumours originated in the external ear canal and comprised four adnexal tumours, one squamous papilloma and three adenocarcinomas of the ceruminous glands. Papillary adenomas were recognised within the middle ear cavity of two dogs. In one animal the precise origin of an anaplastic carcinoma involving the middle ear could not be determined. Only five of the tumours were amendable to surgical excision and four dogs survived for more than eight months after surgery.

The precise aetiology of enzootic haematuria in cattle remains unknown. The involvement of bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinium) appears certain because of the close association between bracken fern infested farms and enzootic haematuria. Several toxic principles have been identified but the main carcinogenic element remains to be conclusively demonstrated. More recently, bovine papilloma virus has been implicated in the aetiology of enzootic haematuria. Its possible interaction with bracken fern carcinogen is discussed.

A lesion on the head of a steer, defined histologically as an epithelial papilloma, yielded DNA which did not hybridise with any of the bovine papillomavirus DNAs usually associated with the formation of skin lesions. DNA from the lesion did hybridise with DNA from bovine papillomavirus 4, even under stringent conditions, and contained a sequence that could be amplified by polymerase chain reaction with primers specific for that virus. Bovine papillomavirus 4 had previously been isolated only from lesions of the upper alimentary canal.
