Levamisole is an anthelmintic drug which also has immunomodulatory properties. The application of these immunomodulatory properties in the prevention and, or, treatment of bovine
mastitis
is considered. In the light of the available evidence on the use of levamisole against
mastitis
and of our understanding of the pathogenesis of
mastitis
it is thought that the prospect of using levamisole beneficially is limited. However, drying-off and parturition are two times at which levamisole may have rational application in
mastitis
prevention.

During the past four years this practice has monitored the incidence of
mastitis
and treatments on farms involved in a
mastitis
control scheme. This paper outlines the major features of the control programme from the practice point of view and analyses the data collected during the monitoring.

Listeria monocytogenes type 4 was isolated from milk of a cow affected with
mastitis
in the left fore quarter. Histological examination revealed a severe suppurative
mastitis
with eosinophil leucocytes predominating among the inflammatory cells. The findings and the public health aspect of the condition are discussed.

Five hundred herds were examined to determine the prevalence of subclinical
mastitis
in the British dairy herd. The prevalences of the various infections recorded were Streptococcus agalactiae 3.4 per cent of quarters, S dysgalactiae 1.1 per cent, S uberis 1.5 per cent and Staphylococcus pyogenes 8.1 per cent. There were regional differences in the prevalence of some of these pathogens. The national prevalence of subclinical
mastitis
as defined by the International Dairy Federation was 9.6 per cent of all quarters. Udder infections were less prevalent in herds where
mastitis
control measures were being used. The prevalence of infection also declined as the size of herd increased. However, as the uptake of
mastitis
control measures was greater in the larger herds it seems likely that the widespread use of control measures was the most important factor responsible for the relatively low prevalence of subclinical
mastitis
.

During the course of a study of an outbreak of
mastitis
in a dairy herd, an aerotolerant campylobacter was isolated from a milk sample. This organism was cultured and the right front quarters of four young Friesian cows were infected by intramammary inoculation. Each infected quarter developed an acute clinical
mastitis
which resolved spontaneously after 120 hours. The challenge organism was reisolated from one of the quarters.

In the light of experimental work using the mouse model of staphylococcal
mastitis
and supported by material from staphylococcal
mastitis
in cows a progressive pathology of the disease in cattle is proposed. The rationale of the standard control measures (dry cow therapy, teat dipping, etc) is defended, the possibility of immunisation is doubted but the prospect of advances in therapy is thought to be good.

A mycoplasma-like organism was isolated from five cows with chronic incurable
mastitis
from one dairy herd. This organism was shown to be Mycoplasma californicum and was used to infect three cows by intramammary inoculation. The challenge organism was reisolated from all the infected quarters and the ensuing inflammatory response produced a chronic
mastitis
with a permanent drop in milk yield. Antibiotic treatment in one animal was unsuccessful.

Following a sudden drop in milk yield in a large dairy herd, leptospiral
mastitis
due to serotype hardjo was diagnosed serologically and by isolation of the organism from the milk and urine of affected cows. Two milkers subsequently became ill and developed titres to the Hebdomadis serogroup. During the same period the neighbouring herd experienced poor milking performance and a series of abortions and serological evidence suggested recent hardjo infection. The common source of infection appeared to be infected down calving heifers.

Errors in management, other than nutrition, which can be predisposing causes of disease, eg, walking on abrasive surfaces and prolonged standing in slurry (which precipitate lameness), faulty milking and a dirty environment (which are conducive to
mastitis
), breeding to produce oversized fetuses (leading to dystocia) and inefficient observation (leading to a failure to detect oestrus) are described. Nutritional factors affecting conception rates and the occurrence of the metabolic diseases, ketosis, hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia are outlined.

Gross abnormalities of the mammary glands of 1650 culled ewes were recorded. Clinically obvious lesions were detected in 211 (12.8 per cent) of udders; 77 per cent of lesions were abscesses. A generalised calcification of the whole of a gland was observed in 23 udders. It is concluded that abnormalities of the udder are an important reason for the culling ewes. The assessment of the cost-effectiveness of measures to reduce the incidence of
mastitis
would be worthwhile.
