A synthetic oligodeoxyribonucleotide (oligo) covalently bound by an internucleotide linkage to the succinylated Sephacryl S-500 support through 1.9-diaminononane spacer was used as starting compound to assemble the E. coli rec A promoter DNA fragment from synthetic oligos by means of T4 DNA ligase. The solid-phase assembly of the designed DNA was performed by two ways: stepwise ligation of two pairs of oligos (2 dyads) or simultaneous ligation of four oligos (tetrad). Both ways gave equal results with some preference in the tetrad case. The reliability of E. coli promoter DNA fragment assembly was demonstrated by cloning it in a plasmid vector and sequencing the cloned DNA by the solid-phase Maxam--Gilbert technique.

Recent progress in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with a perpendicular easy axis consisting of CoFeB and MgO stacking structures has shown that magnetization dynamics are induced due to voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA), which will potentially lead to future low-power-consumption information technology. For manipulating magnetizations in MTJs by applying voltage, it is necessary to understand the coupled magnetization motion of two magnetic (recording and reference) layers. In this report, we focus on the magnetization motion of two magnetic layers in MTJs consisting of top layers with an in-plane easy axis and bottom layers with a perpendicular easy axis, both having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. According to rectified voltage (Vrec) measurements, the amplitude of the magnetization motion depends on the initial angles of the magnetizations with respect to the VCMA direction. Our numerical simulations involving the micromagnetic method based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion indicate that the magnetization motion in both layers is induced by a combination of VCMA and transferred angular momentum, even though the magnetic easy axes of the two layers are different. Our study will lead to the development of voltage-controlled MTJs having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by controlling the initial angle between magnetizations and VCMA directions.

This article supplements the history of the pre-telescopic observations of the Moon at the turn of the seventeenth century with an analysis of the hitherto understudied manuscript Astrostereon or the Discourse of the Falling of the Planet (1603), written by Edward Gresham, an English astrologer and follower of the heliocentric theory. In this treatise, Gresham presents the results of his observations of the surface of the Moon. These findings are discussed against a wider background of contemporary writings by Galileo Galilei, William Gilbert, Johannes Kepler and Michael Maestlin. Furthermore, Gresham's studies of the Moon are shown as part of London astronomical pursuits represented by Gilbert, the author of the first map of the Moon made on the basis of naked-eye observations (c.1600), and by Thomas Harriot, who outran Galileo in telescopic observations of the Moon (1609). It is suggested that Gresham's reports may have helped Harriot to select the time of his first observation of the Moon and therefore determined its result.
