A survey of faecal samples taken from 1000 suburban dogs revealed an infestation of 7-2 per cent Toxocara canis, 2-7 per cent Toxascaris leonina, 1-3 per cent Trichuris vulpis and 1-3 per cent Uncinaria stenocephala. The faecal material examined was obtained per rectum from well cared-for pet dogs resident in an area of north-west suburban London. The age of the dogs examined, both male and female, ranged from three weeks to 18 years. The clinical picture of the dogs affected by
ascariasis
and in particular Toxocara canis is described and some advice on treatment is included.

Eggs were collected from gravid female Ascaris suum in the abattoir. Cultures were prepared with the eggs in 2 to 3 mm depth of 1 per cent sulphuric acid or on the surface of 2% aqueous agar. They were allowed to develop in a piggery, fresh cultures being started at intervals from January to September. Eggs on the surface of agar developed failry uniformly and a high proportion eventually reached L2. In contrast those under 1% sulphuric acid were less uniform, slower in development and generally less successful. Cultures started on agar between January and May, or from September became infective at approximately the same time in July while those started during June and July contained infective eggs in August and September respectively. No recognisable development occurred between October and April. The significance of these findings for the epidemiology of
ascariasis
is discussed.

Thirty-eight young crocodiles that were emaciated and were euthanased or were found dead on 12 farms in Irian Jaya were examined post mortem. Major diseases were coccidiosis (nine crocodiles), pentastomiasis (four), visceral gout (two) and bacterial pneumonia and septicaemia (two). Other diseases and infections were steatitis, fungal pneumonia, gastric capillariasis, haemogregarine infection,
ascariasis
, filarioid infection and the presence of flukes in the intestine, kidney and blood. Multiple parasitism due to the collection of hatchlings in the wild was considered the primary cause of the ill-thrift and death of the crocodiles.
