A sample of children treated by phototherapy during the neonatal period has been studied in the population of Penne (South Eastern Italy) in order to confirm the association previously reported in newborns from the population of Rome between neonatal jaundice and phenotypes of adenosine deaminase (ADA) and
acid phosphatase
(ACP1). The present data confirm that the incidence of clinically relevant jaundice is much greater in newborns of phenotype ACP1 BA carrying ADA2 allele than in other infants. Since ACP1 probably acts as flavin mononucleotide phosphatase and is modulated by purine nucleotides, it is likely that enzymes of purine nucleotide metabolism (including ADA), ACP1 and flavoenzymes (including gluthatione

and enzymes of Krebs cycle), may represent a polygenic complex influencing bilirubin levels in the first few days of life.

White Wistar female rats only once were administered intratracheally a suspension of the soil dust in the physiologic saline. The respirable fraction of the soil dust was used for preparing the suspension of the latter. The experiment was carried out in 2 groups of rats. The animals of the 1st group received the soil dust suspension which was the mixture of the soil samples from 3 different places in Poland, the animals of the 2nd group from 3 other places in Poland. The control animals were once administered the physiologic saline. 9 months after the application of dust, the specimen of the left lung were taken for histochemical examinations. The reactions to the activity of succinic and lactate dehydrogenase, of tetrazole

and ATP-ase were performed. The changes in the activity of the studied respiratory enzymes and the increase of the reaction to the

The morphology of the intestinal wall and the activity of certain mucosal enzyme systems in the course of neomycin treatment were evaluated. Conventional and, to study the role of the bacterial flora, germ-free rats received 500 mg neomycin daily by stomach tube. Rats were sacrificed after seven days and small intestine (proximal and distal part) together with segments of the colon were removed and prepared for histochemistry. The colon and proximal small intestine of untreated conventional and germ-free animals did not show appreciable differences in staining activity after treatment with neomycin. Neomycin diminished both in normal and germ-free rats the activity of NAD tetrazolium
reductase
, succinate dehydrogenase, esterase, alkaline phosphatase and
acid phosphatase
in the distal small intestine. The findings of this study indicate that explanations for the beneficial effects of neomycin on hyperammonemia in liver disease should not only include the bactericidal action of neomycin but also its influence on absorption and metabolic functions of the mucosal cells.

We have developed a method for isolation of plasma membranes from rabbit endometrium, with high yield and purification. Endometrial homogenates are precipitated with calcium chloride and the resulting supernatant is fractionated by centrifugation in a self-forming gradient of 20% Percoll. Before fractionation, the intact luminal epithelial surface was labelled with 125I-labelled soyabean agglutinin. Between buoyant densities of 1.015 and 1.017 g/ml, a discrete peak of surface label was obtained, which coincided with activities for 5'-nucleotidase and alkaline phosphatase, enzyme markers for the plasma membrane. This peak was well separated from the majority of cellular protein, and from marker enzyme activities for mitochondria and microsomes (NADH cytochrome C
reductase
) and lysosomes (
acid phosphatase
). Electron microscopy of the purified membranes showed membrane sheets and vesicles free from other cellular organelles. Analysis of detergent-soluble membrane proteins, fractionated by concanavalin A-affinity chromatography, revealed differences in the protein pattern of membranes from uteri of rabbits receptive (Day 6 of pregnancy) and non-receptive (Day 3) for implantation. The method will be useful for generation of immunological and affinity probes for surface antigens involved in ovoimplantation.

The new calcium antagonist anipamil (1,7-bis-(3-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylaza-7-cyano-nonadecane) exhibited a pronounced protective effect against isoprenaline-induced myocardial necrosis in rats. Anipamil was administered in single doses of 10 or 20 mg/kg daily for 4 days. 30 mg/kg isoprenaline was given by subcutaneous injection on the 3rd and 4th days of the study. Lobulated fibers have been observed in biopsies of 13 patients with various neuromuscular disorders including limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (3), distal myopathy (2), scapuloperoneal muscular dystrophy (2), congenital myopathy, Kugelberg-Welander syndrome, hypothyroidism, steroid myopathy, osteomalacia and systemic lupus erythematosus (on steroids). In all cases there were fibers characterised by small subsarcolemmal triangular aggregates or more diffuse collections extending into the interior of the muscle fiber. These were strongly reactive with oxidative enzymes,

We consider this structural change of the muscle fiber as a reflection of muscle cell disruption and suggest that they may progress from lobulated fibers to more atrophic core-like fibers.

Possible protective effects of Allium sativum and Crataegus--alone and in combination--on isoprenaline (isoproterenol)-induced heart, liver and pancreas damage were studied using rats as test animals. The formation of multinucleate giant cells (MGCs) was studied after the subcutaneous implantation of cellophane foil into 25 Wistar rats. Epitheloid cells fuse to form MGCs of the Langhans type, with nuclei at the cell periphery that later migrate to the central cell region (Touton's type). Both cell types fuse again to form the monstrous MGC (more than 1 mm in diameter) widely extended on the implant surface. These cells are characterized by enlarged nuclei which are significantly larger than those in MGCs of the Langhans type. The positivity of widely extended MGCs for

We used heterogeneous parental cultures of AXC/SSh rat prostate cancer cells to isolate clonally derived prostate cancer cell lines. Light and electron microscopic analyses established that parental and clonally isolated cells possess features characteristic of secretory epithelium. Biochemical analyses showed that these cells contained androgen receptors and
acid phosphatase
and 5 alpha-
reductase
activity; phenotypic markers characteristic of differentiated prostate epithelium. Content of these prostate epithelial cell markers was variable and cell line specific. We used selected cell lines to examine androgen modulation of AXC/SSh rat prostate cancer cell proliferation in vitro. We found that proliferation of C-family or D-family cells, those respectively maintained on medium without additions or medium containing 10(-7) M 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, was not affected by changes in medium testosterone concentration through the range 10(-6)-10(-9) M. In contrast, testosterone modified proliferation of T-family cells, those maintained on medium containing 10(-7) M testosterone, and effects were antagonized by the anti-androgen RU 23908. Preliminary studies established that AXC/SSh rat prostate cancer cells elaborate polypeptide components which stimulate in vitro cell proliferation. Both the ability to elaborate these components and their effects on in vitro cell proliferation appeared to be cell line specific.
