We undertook this study to characterize the postthoracotomy compartmental displacement and respiratory mechanical changes occurring during and after the performance of the incentive spirometry maneuver. Postoperatively, the incentive recruitment of VT was reduced, a result of a decrease in TI and TI/TTOT; VT/TI was unchanged. There was postoperative decrease of AB and AB/VT during incentive spirometry, greatest in the 60 degrees group. Our results characterize the nature of the respiratory recruitment afforded by incentive spirometry, before and after thoracotomy. We also found evidence of postthoracotomy diaphragmatic derecruitment during incentive spirometry exacerbated by a high recumbency angle.

In order to study the effect of stress on lymphocyte proliferation, SD rats were restrained with four limbs tied on a frame in supine position at room temperature (20 degrees C) for 20 h, and control animals were not disturbed in home

The peripheral blood lymphocytes were separated from heparinized whole blood by density gradient (d 1.077) centrifugation, or the serum was obtained after the blood coagulated at 4 degrees C for about 6h. It was found that the blood lymphocyte proliferation induced by Con A was significantly inhibited in the stressed group as compared with the control (P less than 0.01, n = 8,

Several theories have linked sleep with change in monoamine activity. However, the use of sleep deprivation to show that changes in sleep generate changes in monoamines (directly or through feedback) has produced inconsistent results. To explore whether longer sleep deprivation, better documented sleep loss, more complete controls or regional brain analyses would produce clear sleep loss-induced change, eight rats were subjected to total sleep deprivation (TSD) by the disk-over-water method for 11-20 days and were guillotined along with yoked control (TSC) and home-

control (HCC) rats. Brains were removed and dissected to obtain the caudate, frontal cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, midbrain and hindbrain (pons-medulla). Tissue sections were analyzed for concentrations of serotonin (5HT), its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA), dopamine (DA), its metabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), and either norepinephrine or, in the caudate section, the DA metabolite homovanillic acid. Previous work demonstrated that the brains of many reptiles, including the American chameleon Anolis carolinensis (A. carolinensis), are functionally 'split'. Because the left eye in this species projects predominantly to the right hemisphere, and vice versa, inferences about lateralized brain functioning can be made in A. carolinensis by observation of eye use during behavioral encounters. Using this model, past work suggested that territorial aggression in Anolis is under the preferential control of the right hemisphere, and that acute stress or chronic alcohol exposure selectively reduces right hemisphere mediated territorial aggression. In addition, drugs which increase serotonin (5-HT) in the synaptic cleft inhibit aggressive responding in anoles in both hemispheres. The current experiment examined whether or not the administration of the serotonin agonists 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamine) tetralin (8-OHDPAT), quipazine, or meta-chlorophenylbiguanide (mCPBG) alter territorial aggression in Anolis. Nine adult socially isolated male A. carolinensis underwent a series of behavioral trials during which an antagonistic male was introduced into the

Once stable responding was initiated, all subjects were injected in a semi-randomized crossover manner with the following agents, (1) lactated Ringer's, (2) the 5-HT2 agonist quipazine (1.5 mg/kg and 3.0 mg/kg), (3) the 5-HT1 agonist 8-OHDPAT (83 mg/kg), and (4) the 5-HT3 agonist mCPBG (3.0 mg/kg and 9 mg/kg). Although 8-OHDPAT inhibited aggression, injected subjects developed phenotypic displays of aggressive coloring/posturing, such as blackening of the eye spot and a raising of the neck crest. These results suggest that aggressive action can be differentiated from phenotypic displays that accompany aggression by a 5-HT1 agonist. They also indicate that there is an asymmetrical effect of 5-HT2/5-HT3 serotonin agonists on hemispheric mediation of aggression in this species.

Oxidative damage to DNA could be involved in the increased risk of
cancer associated
with exposure to polluted urban air, which contains a number of oxidants. CYP1A2 is induced by and metabolizes polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and aromatic amines and could modify effects of exposure to ambient air pollution. Similarly, DNA repair may be influenced by occupational and other exposures as well as modify the effect of DNA damaging agents. As part of a large investigation of the genotoxic burden to diesel exposed workers in transport sectors we studied oxidative DNA damage in 57 non-smoking bus drivers from the greater Copenhagen area. The drivers were studied on a workday and on a day off work. Comparisons were made between drivers from the central (n=30) and rural/suburban (n=27) areas of Copenhagen. The rate of oxidative DNA damage was estimated from 24 h urinary excretion of 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG), a repair product of the highly mutagenic oxidation of guanine in DNA or the cellular pool of GTP. CYP1A2 activity was estimated from the urinary excretion of metabolites of dietary caffeine. The DNA repair was estimated by unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) in mononuclear cells isolated on the workday. Repeated measures

and multifactorial ANCOVA with CYP1A2 activity, age and UDS as covariates were used for statistical evaluation. On the workday, the 8-oxodG excretion was 190+/-108 and 146+/-89 pmol/kg 24 h in the bus drivers from central and the suburban/rural areas Copenhagen, respectively (p<0.05). The 8-oxodG excretion was not significantly different between the workday and the day off. CYP1A2 activity was not affected by driving area but was correlated with the 8-oxodG excretion on the workday (r=0.53; p<0.05). UDS was not significantly affected by driving area or correlated with the 8-oxodG excretion. The increased excretion of 8-oxodG in bus drivers from central Copenhagen as compared with drivers from rural/suburban greater Copenhagen suggests that exposure to ambient air pollution causes oxidative damage to DNA. This effect may be modified by the activity of CYP1A2 or a coregulated enzyme.

No consensus exists about the quantity and variety of environmental enrichment needed to achieve an acceptable level of psychological well-being among singly housed primates. Behavioral and plasma and fecal cortisol measures were used to evaluate the effectiveness of four levels of toy and foraging enrichment provided to eight wild-caught, singly housed adult male brown capuchins (Cebus apella). The 16-week-long study comprised six conditions and began with a 4-week-long preexperimental and ended with a 4-week-long postexperimental period during which the subjects were maintained at baseline enrichment levels. During the intervening 8 weeks, the subjects were randomly assigned to a sequence of four 2-week-long experimental conditions: control (baseline conditions), toy (the addition of two plastic toys to each
cage
), box (access to a foraging box with food treats hidden within crushed alfalfa), and box & toy (the addition of two plastic toys and access to a foraging box). Behavioral responses to changes in enrichment were rapid and extensive. Within-subject repeated-measure ANOVAs with planned post hoc contrasts identified highly significant reductions in abnormal and undesirable behaviors (and increases in normal behaviors) as the level of enrichment increased from control to toy to box to box & toy. No significant behavioral differences were found between the control and pre- and postexperimental conditions. Plasma and fecal cortisol measures revealed a different response to changing enrichment levels. Repeated-measure
ANOVA
models found significant changes in both these measures across the six conditions. The planned post hoc analyses, however, while finding dramatic increases in cortisol titers in both the pre- and postexperimental conditions relative to the control condition, did not distinguish cortisol responses among the four enrichment levels. Linear regressions among weekly group means in behavioral and cortisol measures (n=16) found that plasma cortisol was significantly predicted by the proportions of both normal and abnormal behaviors; as the proportion of normal behaviors increased, the plasma cortisol measures decreased. Plasma cortisol weekly group means were also significantly and positively predicted by fecal cortisol weekly group means, but no behavioral measure significantly predicted fecal cortisol weekly group means. In sum, these findings argue strongly that access to a variety of toy and foraging enrichment positively affects behavioral and physiological responses to stress and enhances psychological well-being in singly housed brown capuchins.

During proportional assist ventilation (PAV), the ventilator pressure is servocontrolled throughout each spontaneous inspiration such that it instantaneously increases in proportion to the airflow (resistive unloading mode), or inspired volume (elastic unloading mode), or both (combined unloading mode). The PAV pressure changes are generated in a closed-loop feedback circuitry commonly using a pneumotachographic signal. In neonates, however, a pneumotachograph increases dead space ventilation, and its signal may include a substantial endotracheal tube leak component. We hypothesized that respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP) can replace pneumotachography to drive the ventilator during PAV without untoward effects on ventilation or respiratory gas exchange. Ten piglets and five rabbits were supported for 10-min (normal lungs) or 20-min (meconium injured lungs) periods by each of the three PAV modes. In each mode, three test periods were applied in random order with the ventilator driven by the pneumotachograph signal, or the RIP abdominal band signal, or the RIP sum signal of rib

and abdomen. Interchanging the three input signals did not affect the regularity of spontaneous breathing, and gas exchange was achieved with similar peak and mean airway pressures (

). However, the RIP sum signal worked adequately only when the relative gains of rib

With the aim of carrying out an analysis of selection components in this species, male mating success, in relation to karyotype and three morphometric traits, was assessed by using experimental contests with four males and one female per mating

. Karyotype was assessed in terms of fused chromosome 3/6 dosage and coded as "0", "1" and "2" for unfused homozygotes, heterozygotes and fusion homozygotes, respectively. The individual

Since the phenotypic correlations among traits were significant, the selective effects were assessed by means of a multivariate analysis, which demonstrated that selection acted significantly on femur length only, selection on karyotype being indirect. Given that the fusion frequency has been constant since 1985, the presence of selective trade-offs cannot be ruled out.
