The
FeCl3
-catalysed arylation of C60F18 gives tri-substituted compounds C60F15Ar3, where Ar=phenyl, 4-tolyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-phenoxyphenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 3,4-dichlorophenyl, 2-biphylenyl and 2-fluorenyl, together with some bis- and mono-substituted product. Bis-substitution was achieved with biphenylene and fluoranthene, and mono-substitution with biphenylene (2-position), pyrene (1-position), and naphthalene (1- and 2-positions); the tris-phenyl and tris-biphenylene derivatives are fluorescent. The 2-naphthyl substituent freely rotates at 328 K, whereas rotation of the 1-naphthyl substituent is prevented by interaction of the peri-hydrogen atom with fluorine. The 1-naphthyl derivative eliminates a molecule of HF during EI mass spectrometry, whilst the 2-naphthyl derivative eliminates HF and all fluorenes to give a naphthaleno[60]fullerene. The reaction rate is relatively unaffected by electron supply in the aryl rings, but no product was obtained with benzotrifluoride which defines the lower reactivity limit. The low discrimination between aromatics makes it possible to isolate derivatives having different aryl groups attached to the

. Reactions occur mainly when the reagent solutions (or solutions in 1,2-dichlorobenzene) are evaporated to dryness. In most
FeCl3
-catalysed reactions, unreacted C60F18 was recovered, more if the less effective SnCl4 was used as a catalyst; use of AlCl3 resulted in polyarylation and degradation of the C60F18. The structure of C60F17(1-biphenylyl) was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Reaction of C60F18 with perylene/

The scope and limitations of the alkylation of [closo-B12(OH)12]2- using a series of fourteen alkyl and aralkyl halides and two p-toluenesulfonic acid esters in the presence of N,N-diisopropylethylamine have been investigated. The dodecaalkoxy-closo-dodecaborate products, [closo-B12(OR)12]2-, and their hypercloso two-electron oxidation products have been explored. The species [closo-B12(OR)12]2- containing 26
cage
-bonding electrons may undergo two reversible, sequential, one-electron oxidation processes, producing a 25-electron radical anion and a 24-electron neutral species. Several oxidizing reagents were investigated for the chemical oxidation of [closo-B12(OR)12]2- and [hypercloso-B12(OR)12]- to [hypercloso-B12(OR)12]. Both
FeCl3
.6H2O and K3Fe(CN)6 in 90/5/5 ethanol/acetonitrile/H2O were found to be the reagents of choice. The reverse reaction leading from the neutral species to the radical anion and subsequently to the dianion was achieved using sodium borohydride in ethanol. A variety of alkoxyl derivatives have been synthesized by heating the reactants for extended periods of time in acetonitrile at the reflux temperature. The use of elevated reaction temperatures attained by employing moderate argon pressure (autoclave) over the reaction mixture led to drastic reductions in reaction times and increased efficiency. X-ray diffraction studies of substituted dodecabenzyl ether derivatives proved that 2(2-) has approximate Ih symmetry while hypercloso-2, -3, -9, -11, -12, and -13 have approximate D3d point group symmetry due to Jahn-Teller distortion from Ih.

Reduction of 1,12-closo-C2B10H12 followed by reaction with the appropriate metal halide and metathesis with either [K(18-crown-6)]Br or [BTMA]Cl ([BTMA] = [C6H5CH2N(CH3)3]+) affords isolable salts of the supraicosahedral metallacarborane sandwich anions [4,4-M-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2]n- in moderate to good yield. Compounds prepared are [BTMA][4,4-Co-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 1), [K(18-crown-6)][4,4-Co-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 2), [K(18-crown-6)]2[4,4-Ni-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 3), [K(18-crown-6)]2[4,4-Fe-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 4), [BTMA]2[4,4-Fe-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 5) and [K(18-crown-6)]2[4,4-Ti-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 6). Oxidation of the iron(II) species 4 and 5 with
FeCl3
in THF generates the iron(III) analogues [K(18-crown-6)][4,4-Fe-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 7) and [BTMA][4,4-Fe-(1,10-closo-C2B10H12)2] ( 8), respectively. All diamagnetic compounds were characterised spectroscopically and the structures of 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction. All anions have the anticipated cluster structures with two docosahedral 13-vertex cages joined at the central metal atom (the common degree-six vertex 4). Carbon atoms occupy the degree-four vertex 1 and the degree-five vertex 10. 11B NMR spectroscopy suggests the anions have, on the NMR timescale, C2h symmetry in solution at room temperature, consistent with free rotation, or at least substantial libration, of
cage
units about the long molecular axis. In the solid state the relative conformations of the two cages may be rationalised by simple bonding arguments, the single exception being the conformation of 4, in which both cages are subject to directional B-H...K+ interactions to the [K(18-crown-6)]+ counterion. The salts 3, 6 and 7 also show B-H...K+ interactions but involving one
cage
only.

Novel
cage
-like and electromagnetic functional polyaniline (PANI)/CoFe2O4 composite nanostructures, in which the self-assembled PANI nanofibers (approximately 15 nm in diameter) entwined around the octahedral CoFe2O4 magnet acting as the nucleation site or template, were successfully prepared by
FeCl3
as either oxidant and dopant via a self-assembly process. The coordination effect of the magnet as a nucleation site or template and the magnetic interaction between the PANI nanofibers and CoFe2O4 as a driving force results in such
cage
-like nanostructures. The
cage
-like composite nanostructures not only have high conductivity (sigmamax approximately 5.2 S/cm), but also show a typical ferromagnetic behavior.
