We measured the breathing pattern of normal subjects, asymptomatic smokers, asymptomatic and symptomatic asthmatic patients, and patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, restrictive lung disease,
primary pulmonary hypertension
and anxiety state utilizing respiratory inductive plethysmography. Respiratory rate was increased above the normal in smokers and in patients with COPD, restrictive lung disease and pulmonary hypertension, but remained normal in asthmatic patients. Inspiratory times (T1) of one second or less often occurred in patients with COPD, restrictive lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension. Smokers and patients with symptomatic asthma, COPD, restrictive lung disease and pulmonary hypertension showed heightened respiratory center drive as reflected by elevated mean inspiratory flow (VT/TI). Fractional inspiratory time was reduced to a variable extent in smokers, symptomatic asthmatic patients and patients with COPD, and was a weak indicator of airways obstruction. Patients with COPD often had major fluctuations of expiratory timing, periodic fluctuations of end-expiratory level, and asynchrony between rib
cage
and abdominal movements. Chronic anxiety was characterized by frequent sighs; episodic rapid rates alternating with apneas were less common. We conclude that analysis of breathing patterns provides diagnostic discrimination among normal subjects and disease states.

We have measured static lung volumes after heart-lung transplantation (HLT) in seven patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) (Group 1), three patients with chronic hyperinflation due to diseases other than CF (Group 2), and six patients with
primary pulmonary hypertension
(
PPH
) (Group 3). Total lung capacity was within normal limits at 1 yr after surgery in all patients. Similarly, FRC was within the normal range in Groups 2 and 3. On the other hand, patients with CF showed a persistent increase in FRC; at 1 yr after HLT, FRC averaged 4.13 +/- 0.52 L compared with a predicted value of 3.20 +/- 0.23 L (p < 0.01). The postoperative static pressure-volume curve of the lung in the patients with CF was superimposed on the predicted one, suggesting that the increased FRC originated in the chest wall. Additional studies with computerized tomographic scans demonstrated that the rib
cage
anteroposterior diameter at FRC averaged 12.1 +/- 1.6 cm in patients with CF, 9.5 +/- 1.2 cm in patients with
PPH
, and 9.4 +/- 0.7 cm in a group of healthy subjects matched with the patients with CF (p < 0.01). We conclude that after HLT, patients with CF show persistent hyperinflation due to rib
cage
expansion along the anteroposterior dimension. This shape change may represent a structural adaptation that occurs in response to chronic pulmonary hyperinflation acquired during rib
cage
growth.

Charged polarons in thin films of polymer-fullerene composites are investigated by light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at 9.5 GHz (X-band) and 130 GHz (D-band). The materials studied were poly(3-hexylthiophene) (
PHT
), [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (C(60)-PCBM), and two different soluble C(70)-derivates: C(70)-PCBM and diphenylmethano[70]fullerene oligoether (C(70)-DPM-OE). The first experimental identification of the negative polaron localized on the C(70)-
cage
in polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunctions has been obtained. When recorded at conventional X-band EPR, this signal is overlapping with the signal of the positive polaron, which does not allow for its direct experimental identification. Owing to the superior spectral resolution of the high frequency D-band EPR, we were able to separate light-induced signals from P(+) and P(-) in
PHT
-C(70) bulk heterojunctions. Comparing signals from C(70)-derivatives with different side-chains, we have obtained experimental proof that the polaron is localized on the
cage
of the C(70) molecule.
