California has 12% of the U.S. population. In 1991, the newly diagnosed cancer cases in California represented 10% of all new cancer cases in the country, and the yearly toll was 10% of all cancer deaths. Relative to all new cancer cases in the U.S., California had 10, 9.8, 9.8, and 9.3% of breast, lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers, respectively. Because of its large population and cancer incidence, the epidemiology of cancer in California is of particular interest. Epidemiological factors reviewed in this article include ethnicity, lifestyle, occupation, and environmental conditions. Ethnic factors: There is an increased incidence of cervical and gallbladder cancer among Hispanic women, and of stomach cancer in Hispanic men and women. In U.S.-born Chinese men, the most prevalent cancers are those of the lung and colon, which is also seen in American white men. In U.S.-born Chinese women, there is an upward displacement of breast cancer incidence. In U.S.-born Japanese men and women, the mortality rate is closer to that of American whites. Life-style: Members of the Mormon Church and Seventh-Day Adventists have only 50% of the U.S. standardized mortality rate for

with smoking. Increased coffee consumption has been found to be associated with increased occurrence of colon and bladder cancer; alcohol use has been reported to have a positive association with colorectal cancer. The large AIDS population in San Francisco has a 144-fold odds ratio of Kaposi's sarcoma and a fivefold odds ratio of
lymphoma
when compared with the general U.S. population. Occupational factors: An increased incidence of mesothelioma in asbestos workers, of gastric cancer, skin cancer, and
lymphoma
in men working in dusty environments, and of astrocytoma in individuals with prolonged exposure to low-frequency electric and magnetic fields has been recorded. Environmental factors: The drinking-water pool in northern California is contaminated with asbestos of the serpentine type, which is associated with mesothelioma of the peritoneum and carcinoma of the lung, gallbladder, and pancreas. Petrochemical fumes in the heavily industrialized San Francisco Bay area have not been associated with an increased occurrence of cancer. No significant incidence in cancer has been noted in the counties surrounding the nuclear power plant at San Onofre during 18 years of close observation.

hypercalcemia (CAH), parathyroid adenomas, and miscellaneous tumors. PTHrP was undetectable (less than 1.8 pM) in normal dogs and increased in dogs with CAH due to adenocarcinomas derived from apocrine glands of the anal sac (44.9 +/- 27 pM),
lymphoma
(8.3 +/- 4.4 pM), and miscellaneous carcinomas (13.3 +/- 11.4 pM). The PTHrP concentration decreased in dogs with
lymphoma
and anal sac adenocarcinomas after successful treatment of CAH. The PTHrP concentration had a significant linear correlation with total serum calcium in dogs with anal sac adenocarcinomas and hypercalcemia, but not in dogs with
lymphoma
and hypercalcemia. Serum N-terminal PTH concentrations were usually in the normal range (12-34 pg/ml) for all groups of dogs except dogs with parathyroid adenomas (83 +/- 38 pg/ml). The serum PTH concentration increased after successful treatment of CAH. Serum 1,25-(OH)2D concentrations were decreased, normal, or increased in dogs with CAH, and 1,25-(OH)2D levels decreased after treatment of CAH. In summary, circulating concentrations of PTHrP are consistently increased in dogs with CAH, and PTHrP appears to play an important role in the induction of hypercalcemia.

A total of 72 human leukemia-
lymphoma
cell lines were studied for reactivity with the monoclonal antibody (MAb) A7, an anti-human colon-cancer-cell-associated antigen reagent, by indirect membrane immunofluorescence. Nine of the 72 cell lines expressed the antigen recognized by A7 MAb. Five of the 34 T-cell lines, 2 of the 21 B-cell lines, and 2 of the 3 non-lymphoid-non-myeloid cell lines were reactive with A7 MAb. By means of SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting, the antigens isolated from both colon cancer cell lines (WiDr, SW1116 and LoVo) and leukemia cell lines (A3/KAWAKAMI, H9, RPMI 8226 and SPI-801) showed an identical MW of 42-43 kDa. The non-glycosylated antigen recognized by A7 MAb, which was expressed on both the colon cancer line (SW1116) and the leukemia line (H9) in the presence of tunicamycin, also showed an identical MW of 36 kDa. However, the quantity of the antigen in the leukemia cells was significantly lower than in the colon cancer cells. Although expression of this colon-

Atypical mycobacterial disease due to Mycobacterium avium intracellular serotypes was the most frequent single disease agent recognized (33% [18 macaques]). This disease began in the ileum and large intestine with subsequent systemic involvement. An abnormality of host response to infective agents, in general, was indicated by the unusually high occurrence of this disease, as well as other disease processes. Morphologic evaluation of lymphoid organs revealed decreased cellularity of follicles and decreased numbers of plasma cells in all macaques, whereas T cell-dependent areas varied from hypocellular to hypercellular with 5 macaques with malignant

. The spontaneous erythrocyte rosette-forming subpopulation of T cells was decreased in peripheral blood, but was increased in lymph nodes containing atypical mycobacterial lesions. Serum immunoglobulin value decreased progressively in diseased macaques. A basic abnormality of T-cell subpopulations controlling other components of host response was suspected. for 25 min. During the mental stress there was a significant increase in natural cytotoxicity. Thus, retained radioactivity in the lungs was decreased to 74 +/- 6% of the control levels which was set to 100% (P < 0.01). This augmentation of YAC-1-cell clearance could be blocked with the beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist Timolol. Two hours after termination of the air stress, in vivo cytotoxicity had returned to control levels. In contrast, acute physical stress, consisting of electrically induced muscle contractions for 60 min, had no significant effects on in vivo cytotoxicity, either during the stimulation or 1, 2 or 24 h after the stimulation. Further, significantly increased plasma levels of adrenaline were seen after the air jet stress, but not after muscle stimulation. There were no significant changes in plasma noradrenaline levels either after air stress or muscle stimulation. These results indicate that changes in in vivo cytotoxicity after mild mental stress are dependent on increased plasma catecholamine levels while acute physical stress without changes in catecholamine levels, does not influence in vivo cytotoxicity.

We report a case of squamous cell lung cancer with nephrotic syndrome. A 69-year-old man was admitted because of proteinuria and microhematuria. A plain chest X-ray film on admission showed a large mass in the left-lower lung field. The patient was given a diagnosis of minimal-change-nephrotic syndrome and squamous cell lung cancer. We first treated the nephrotic syndrome with glucocorticoid therapy, and then treated the lung cancer with chemo-radiotherapy. This reduced the lung cancer, alleviated the proteinuria, and completely resolved the nephrotic syndrome. Nephrotic syndrome is generally associated with malignant

High-frequency microsatellite instability (MSI), defined as more than 20% unstable loci, is an inconsistent finding in hematologic malignancies; consequently, the significance of deficient DNA mismatch repair (MMR) to their pathogenesis has been questioned. To further investigate the relationship between MMR deficiency and genomic instability in hematologic malignancies, this study evaluated MSH2-/- murine lymphomas for insertion/deletion (ID) mutations within the transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta receptor type II (TbetaR-II) gene and MSI at 10 neutral microsatellites. The lymphomas displayed ID mutations within short mononucleotide runs of TbetaR-II at a high frequency, whereas nonmalignant tissue from corresponding animals lacked mutations. Loss of TbetaR-II transcripts and protein was seen in 6 of 7 murine lymphomas harboring acquired TbetaR-II mutations. In the analysis of paired nonmalignant and tumor DNA samples, low-frequency but not high-frequency MSI was found. Low-frequency MSI occurred in 8 of 20 lymphomas and 12 displayed microsatellite stability. MSI was even less frequent in nonmalignant tissue as only 3 of 20 samples displayed low-frequency MSI and 17 displayed stability. Evaluation of 20 single cell clones from the MSH2-/-

cell lines R25 and L15 identified high-frequency MSI in 4 and 2 clones, respectively. The remaining clones showed low-frequency MSI or stability. Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) has interesting anti-neoplastic and pleiotropic immune stimulatory properties. The virus preferentially replicates in and kills tumor cells and appears to be safe and to varying degrees effective in phase II-clinical studies in the US and in Europe. Here we have compared various lytic and non-lytic strains of NDV with regard to their antitumor effects after local or systemic application. As tumor models we used human metastatic melanoma xenotransplants in nude mice and murine metastatic colon carcinoma (
CT26
), renal carcinoma (Renca) and
lymphoma
(ESb) cell lines. Intra or peri-tumoral application of NDV or NDV infected tumor cells showed more pronounced antitumor activity than systemic application even when in the latter case much higher dose ranges were used. In the
CT26
colon carcinoma model the non-lytic strain Ulster showed stronger antitumor activity than the lytic strain 73T. In the human MeWo melanoma xentransplant model strong antitumor bystander effects were observed by 20% admixture of melanoma cells pre-infected in vitro with NDV (either strain Ulster or Italien). Virus therapy of pre-established human melanomas by intra-tumoral injection of NDV was effective with the lytic strain Italien but not with the non-lytic strain Ulster. Systemic anti-metastatic effects were never observed with NDV alone in contrast to previous results obtained with NDV modified tumor vaccines.
