Sera of the influenza patients and healthy controls were tested for some types of autoantibody (
SMA
,
ANA
, ABBA, AMA). They were detected in 83.8% of the patients' sera and in 16.6% of controls.
SMA
were present in 77.4%,
ANA
in 54.8%, and ABBA in 16.1% of the patient's sera. AMA were not detected. A majority of the sera contained more than one autoantibody type. The possible mechanisms of induction of the autoantibodies in virus infection and their possible role in disease are briefly discussed.

Rabbits immunized with purified influenza A (H3N2) virus within 4 weeks developed autoantibodies of
SMA
type (smooth muscle antibodies). In some of them also ABBA (antibodies against brush border of proximal renal tubuli) and
ANA
(anti-nuclear antibodies) were detected. This autoimmune response was found to be unrelated to either the virus dose or the adjuvant used for immunization. Autoantibodies were not parallel in titre with influenza antibody.

A number of clinical, biochemical, immunological and morphological variables were recorded at first admission of 500 consecutive patients with biopsy verified acute viral hepatitis in the period February 1969-June 1972. In February 1973, 28 of these patients had a morphologically documented chronic liver disease: 4 cirrhosis of the liver, 15 chronic aggressive hepatitis, and 9 chronic persistent hepatitis. 74 patients were followed up until morphological normalization took place. The initially recorded variables in the two groups were compared, and the following factors were significantly higher in the group with subsequent development of chronic liver disease:--frequency of drug addicts, median of the highest gammaglobulin,
ANA
,
SMA
, partial destruction of the limiting membrane, incidence of piecemeal necrosis, and pronounced plasma cell infiltration in the portal tracts. These preliminary results suggest that factors in the initial phase of acute viral hepatitis can be helpful to some extent in predicting the course and prognosis of the disease.

27 normal rabbit sera were tested by indirect immunofluorescent technique. All sera stained smooth and skeletal muscle of human and mammalian tissues and human washed platelets. Two sera had
ANA
activity. These autoantibodies had low titres. Lysed but not intact platelets neutralized the rabbit
SMA
sera activity.

LTA,
SMA
and
ANA
were found at higher frequencies in sera from NPC patients than in those from matched controls. The frequency and GMTs of LTA-positive sera varied with the origin of the patient (Chinese greater than North African greater than Caucasian, thus paralleling the risk for NPC in each ethnic group) and the stage of the disease (stage IV greater than stage I). A positive correlation was found between LTA and anti-EBV titres with regard to anti-VCA and anti-EBNA antibodies.
SMA
were specific for actin, and their titres did not correlate with anti-EBV (VCA, EBNA and EA) titres. Although there was no evidence for an abnormal immunogenicity of the self components recognized by the three autoantibodies, their independent augmentations did not favour the alternative hypothesis of a common central mechanism for their production. The origin and the biological significance of these autoantibodies remains, therefore, to be explained.

32 patients with liver injury following the administration of tuberculosis drugs were examined for HAA,
ANA
,
SMA
and serum immunoglobulin levels. HAA was found in 38-7% of patients.
SMA
were detected in some HAA positive as well as in HAA negative cases.
ANA
except in one case were found in the HAA negative group. Serum IgM levels are significantly higher in patients with liver injury as compared to the normal values. The highest levels of IgG and IgM were found in the
ANA
or/and
SMA
-positive cases.

Serum samples from psoriatic patients were subjected to quantitation of serum IgA, IgG and IgM levels and screening of tissue autoantibodies including
ANA
, GPA, MTA and
SMA
. Serum IgA was found to be significantly elevated and incidences of
ANA
and GPA were also increased. Their significance and possible mechanism were discussed.

Clustering of
ANA
and
SMA
was evaluated in patients with various internal diseases as a pattern of autoantibody formation.
SMA
was found in
ANA
positive patients with chronic hepatitis, undefined collagenoses and autoallergic thyroid diseases significantly more frequently, than in patients without any autoallergic disorders. The incidence of
SMA
in
ANA
positive cases with SLE and RA did not exceed their predictable by chance incidence. It was not found that clustering of autoantibodies is correlated with the E and C lymphocyte receptor abnormality as compared to the control group. The lowest count of E-RFC was found in SLE cases which differed significantly in this respect from the control group and also from chronic vasculitis cases. The clustering of autoantibodies is not correlated with hyperimmunoglobulinemia.

Comparisons made between old and young people depicted the increase with aging in
ANA
and thyroid antibody incidence. In contrast to these antibodies
SMA
were frequently seen in young women. Also in women serum IgM levels were higher as compared to men. Conversely serum IgD levels were higher in men; both these differences were seen in the young group only. Proportions and numbers of E-RFC were significantly reduced in the older group of people as compared to the values of the younger group. Interestingly, the autoantibodies appearing were correlated in women with a lower percentage of E-RFC. Also in women low IgD levels were associated significantly with higher percentage of E-RFC.

Monomeric IgM could be found rather frequently in acute hepatitis and chronic aggressive hepatitis and occasionally also in chronic persistent hepatitis. Earlier it was reported in lympho-proliferative-, autoimmune diseases, some infectious diseases and in cirrhosis of the liver. The occurence of monomeric IgM in chronic aggressive hepatitis correlates with the detection of several autoantibodies (
ANA
,
SMA
, RF). The 7S-IgM-test may be used as an easily measurable additional criterium for diagnosis and course of chronic liver diseases.
