Cancer mortality from 1986 to 1992 was examined in a cohort of 4419 individuals who had been residing in an area of the municipality of Reggio Emilia, northern Italy, where tap water with unusually high selenium content was accidentally supplied. Mortality for all cancers was not significantly different, both in males and in females, from that expected using death rates in the remaining municipal population as standard rates. No significant difference in mortality for site-specific cancers was observed in males, while in females a higher mortality for malignancies of the lymphatic-hematopoietic tissue overall considered and for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was detected. Even if evaluation of the results is hampered by the low number of cancer deaths on which the analysis is based, findings of the study do not support the hypothesis of a strong inverse independent relationship between dietary intake of selenium and cancer mortality in humans.

We report on a 16-year old boy with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who acquired a therapy-induced ascites and pleural effusion during initial chemotherapy. This life-threatening condition could be controlled by intensive care measures including pleural tap and drainage. Chemotherapy could then be continued. The patient has been in continuous complete remission for 18 months.

A 42-year-old-woman, with a 2 year history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma suffered sudden bilateral visual loss. This unusual patient presented with an unifocal choroidal tumor in the superionasal quadrant in both eyes. Fluorescein angiography revealed early and late intense subretinal fluorescence. Cytological examination of the anterior chamber and vitreous tap material revealed abnormal lymphocytes compatible with NHL. Diffuse choroidal infiltration was diagnosed and treated with radiotherapy. Radiotherapy did not provide local control and preservation of the vision. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can infiltrate to the choroid and radiotherapy may not be efffective in every case.

Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is a rare peripheral or cranial neuropathy caused by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Diagnosis is often delayed and prognosis is poor. The authors described a woman in her 70s with a facial left peripheral palsy, complete right abducent palsy, left hypoacusia and balance deficit. Then she presented with low progressive hyposthenia at four limbs and cognitive impairment, sudden facial right peripheral palsy and complete left abducent palsy. The authors performed brain and spinal MRI, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and extensive haematological examinations for infections, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases. All the results were not diagnostic. Only repeating for the third time a spinal tap, CSF presented neoplastic B cells suggestive for large B-NHL. The authors diagnosed primary NL. The patient was treated with R-CHOP but she died 2 months later. In front of rapidly progressive neuropathy, a NL has to be considered performing different examinations, especially and repeating them after a short period.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp, is the most widely used herbicide on the globe, and has recently been linked to an increased risk in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in exposed individuals. Therefore, detection and monitoring of glyphosate levels in water and soil is important for public safety. Here, we describe a biosensor for glyphosate based on an engineered Escherichia coli phosphonate-binding protein (PhnD). Mutations in the binding pocket were introduced to convert PhnD into a glyphosate-binding protein. A fluorescence group attached near the hinge of the protein was added to monitor binding of glyphosate and to determine its concentration in unknown samples. The resulting engineered biosensor can detect glyphosate in tap water and in soil samples treated with the herbicide at submicromolar concentrations, well below the limit for drinking water in the USA. Incorporating this biosensor in a device would allow rapid and continuous monitoring of glyphosate in water and soil samples.
