These experiments used forced-choice preferential looking to test infants for preferences between pairs of random-dot patterns that moved in opposite directions. With monocularly-viewed horizontally moving patterns,

-week-old infants showed a preference for nasalwards motion. With binocularly-viewed vertical motion, there was no overall preference, but the results did show a significant correlation between upwards bias of OKN and preference for downwards motion. In a longitudinal experiment, the nasalwards preference first appeared at 7-8 weeks, and thereafter persisted until the end of testing (23-25 weeks). In this experiment the infants were also tested for stereopsis, under conditions that were as nearly as possible identical to the direction preference test. There was no evidence that the onset of stereopsis had any effect on the directional asymmetry. The directional asymmetries revealed by these experiments appear to be distinct from the asymmetries of OKN and motion VEPs. It is possible that they reflect
asymmetrical
directional responses in extrastriate visual cortex (e.g. area V5/MT).

Three cases of focal myelomalacia and syrinx formation occurring as complications of lumbar spinal anesthesia are reported. In all three instances complication occurred due to accidental injection of lidocaine into the substance of the spinal cord. The primary complaint in all the three cases was severe sharp and shooting pain in both lower limbs, being more severe in certain dermatomes. Neurological deficits were noticed after the effect of the anesthetic agent had worn off. Sensory and motor deficits were

and focal; these improved in
6-12
months time. Pain persisted for 1-3 years and then subsided gradually. Carbamazepine and gabapentin were effective in symptomatic relief of this pain. MRI of the dorsolumbar spine done 4-6 months after the spinal anesthetic procedure showed myelomalacic changes with focal syrinx formation in the conus and epiconus region of the spinal cord. The syrinx extended 1-2 vertebral segments in the vertical plane but was confined to a small area in the axial plane. Attempting to use higher lumbar intervertebral spaces for access to the subarachnoid space or epidural space may lead to inadvertent puncture of the lower dorsal spaces; this makes the procedure of spinal anesthesia at this level prone for spinal cord injury, with subsequent risk of development of myelomalacic syrinx in the conus and epiconus region of the spinal cord.

Persistence of the
asymmetrical
tonic neck reflex (ATNR) was examined in children with partial hearing (aged
6-12
years). Core literacy skills were also assessed. Three groups of children were selected from three schools with special units for children with partial hearing. All children completed an upright ATNR test protocol and standardized tests of reading and spelling. Children with partial hearing had significant levels of ATNR persistence, and significant reading and spelling difficulties. The findings suggest that persistence of an early sub-cortical reflex system may be associated with some of the motor and cognitive difficulties experienced by children with partial hearing.
