To provide further understanding of the magnetic resonance (MR) signal intensities in the triangular fibrocartilage (TFC) and interosseous ligaments of the wrist, the authors performed MR imaging with gross pathologic and histologic analysis in 10 cadaveric wrists. Spin-echo T1- and T2-weighted coronal images were obtained, and 3-mm coronal sections of the specimens were then made that correlated precisely with the MR images. Normal portions of the TFC showed

-like low signal intensity, except near the radial and ulnar attachments. Degeneration of the TFC, present in all cases, was more severe on the proximal surface and was characterized by high signal intensity on T1-weighted images and less high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. These findings differed from those in TFC perforation, which showed high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Similar signal intensity characteristics could allow differentiation of degeneration and perforation of the scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligaments. These findings suggest that in vivo MR imaging may accurately delineate degeneration and perforation of the TFC and intercarpal ligaments.

Approximately 88% of Norwegian dairy cattle are housed in
tie
stalls. Free stall housing for all dairy cattle will be implemented within 20 years. This means that the majority of existing stalls will be rebuilt in the near future. Fifty-seven free stall herds of the Norwegian Red breed were randomly selected and 1547 cows and 403 heifers were trimmed by 13 claw trimmers during the late winter and spring of 2002. The claw trimmers had been taught diagnosing and recording of claw lesions. Environment, management- and feeding routines were also recorded. Fifty-three herds had concrete slatted alleys while 4 had solid concrete. Thirty-five herds had concrete as a stall base, while 17 had rubber mats, 2 had wood and 3 had deep litter straw beds. The prevalence of lameness was 1.6% in hind claws. Models for lameness and claw lesions were designed to estimate the influence of different risk factors and to account for the cluster effects within herd and claw trimmer. Detected risk factors for lameness were: parity three and above and narrow cubicles; for heel horn erosions: lactation stage around 5-7 months after calving and solid concrete alleys; for haemorrhages of the white line: lactation stage around 3-5 months after calving and solid concrete alleys; for haemorrhages of the sole: parity one, lactation stage around 5-7 months after calving and short cubicles, for white line fissures: slatted concrete alleys; for

claws: parities two and above and for corkscrewed claws: solid concrete alleys. The prevalence of lameness in heifers was low, however 29% had one or more claw lesions. Heifers that were housed in pens or free stalls had more heel-horn erosions, haemorrhages of the sole and white-line fissures than heifers in
tie
stalls. As new free stalls are being built, it is important to optimise the conditions for claw health.

The electric field enhancing properties of the V-shaped optical resonant antenna are studied by using finite-difference time-domain method. Both dipolar and quadrupolar modes can be effectively excited and strong electric field enhancement in the gap of the V-shaped antenna is found. Compared with full-wave dipole antenna, the V-shaped antenna has a greater electric field enhancement, which can be attributed to the higher radiation directivity and the smaller curvature radius of the antenna arms. The more
asymmetrical
structure also contributes to the efficient quadrupolar excitation. The electric field enhancement of the V-shaped antenna has different dependences on the open angle of the V-shaped antenna for the dipolar and quadrupolar excitation. We obtained stronger electric field enhancing properties by using V-shaped bow-
tie
antennas, especially for the quadrupolar excitation. The V-shaped antenna and the bow-
tie
antenna can realize strongly localized and enhanced field and thus are well suitable for the use of near-field optics applications.

We propose a new design microwave radiation sensor based on a selectively doped semiconductor structure of
asymmetrical
shape (so-called bow-
tie
diode). The novelty of the design comes down to the gating of the active layer of the diode above different regions of the two-dimensional electron channel. The gate influences the sensing properties of the bow-
tie
diode depending on the nature of voltage detected across the ungated one as well as on the location of the gate in regard to the diode contacts. When the gate is located by the wide contact, the voltage sensitivity increases ten times as compared to the case of the ungated diode, and the detected voltage holds the same polarity of the thermoelectric electromotive force of hot electrons in an asymmetrically shaped
n-n
+
junction. Another remarkable effect of the gate placed by the wide contact is weak dependence of the detected voltage on frequency which makes such a microwave diode to be a proper candidate for the detection of electromagnetic radiation in the microwave and sub-terahertz frequency range. When the gate is situated beside the narrow contact, the two orders of sensitivity magnitude increase are valid in the microwaves but the voltage sensitivity is strongly frequency-dependent for higher frequencies.
