Intelligence-related differences in the detection of stimulus organization previously identified by Soraci, Carlin, Deckner, and Baumeister (1990) were examined further to determine whether they would (a) extend to similar checkerboard stimuli varying solely with respect to symmetry and (b) generalize to form-like polygon stimuli. Detection performances of 10 individuals with mild mental retardation, 10 CA-matched, and 10 MA-matched individuals were assessed on a rapid presentation a two-choice match-to-sample task. The organizations of the target and distractor stimuli were varied across four levels of symmetry: double, vertical, horizontal, and asymmetrical. Results indicated that detection rates for each group were highest when the target stimulus was vertically symmetrical or when target-distractor structural disparity was maximal. However, no significant main effects of subject group or stimulus type (i.e., checkerboard vs. polygon) were found, thereby arguing for the robustness of the symmetry effect across groups differing in intelligence and physically dissimilar stimulus types.

The nature and quality of preadolescent friendships between children with and without learning problems due to mental retardation or mild cognitive difficulties were investigated. Based on an assessment of the reciprocal relationship status of 373 children, including 54 with learning problems, 33 friend and 32 acquaintance dyads were identified. Of these dyads, half included a child with learning problems and half consisted of 2 children without learning problems. The dyads were observed performing a play task. Unlike friendships between children without disabilities, friendships between children with and without learning problems were marked by limited collaboration and shared decision-making, a low level of cooperative play and shared laughter, and an asymmetrical, hierarchical division of roles. The importance of advancing beyond the study of the social acceptance of children with learning problems to study the qualitative aspects of their friendships was discussed.

Hypoxic inhibition of TASK-1, a tandem pore domain background K+ channel, provides a critical link between reduced O2 levels and physiological responses in various cell types. Here, we examined the expression and O2 sensitivity of TASK-1 in immortalized adrenomedullary chromaffin (MAH) cells. In physiological (asymmetrical) K+ solutions, 3 microM anandamide or 300 microM Zn2+ inhibited a strongly pH-sensitive current. Under symmetrical K+ conditions, the anandamide- and Zn2+-sensitive K+ currents were voltage independent. These data demonstrate the functional expression of TASK-1, and cellular expression of this channel was confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blotting. At concentrations that selectively inhibit TASK-1, anandamide and Zn2+ were without effect on the magnitude of the O2-sensitive current or the hypoxic depolarization. Thus TASK-1 does not contribute to O2 sensing in MAH cells, demonstrating the failure of a known O2-sensitive K+ channel to respond to hypoxia in an O2-sensing cell. These data demonstrate that, ultimately, the sensitivity of a particular K+ channel to hypoxia is determined by the cell, and we propose that this is achieved by coupling distinct hypoxia signaling systems to individual channels. Importantly, these data also reiterate the indirect O2 sensitivity of TASK-1, which appears to require the presence of an intracellular mediator.
