Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the most common cause of chronic
orofacial pain
. They are characterized by painful and hampered jaw function. Especially disc displacements, osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle problems are frequent. The pain is localized in the jaws, face and temples, and jaw opening may be reduced,
asymmetrical
or irregular with noises from the temporomandibular joints. In cases with restricted jaw mobility or when the pain is provoked or aggravated by jaw function, referral to odontological examination is indicated. The prognosis is good, but full recovery may take years.
