The occurrence of chromosome breaks and reunion of sister chromatids in lymphocytes of two patients with Bloom's syndrome has been compared with those found in X-rayed and control cells. The distribution of breaks in BS is non-random both between and within chromosomes, the centric regions of certain chromosomes being preferentially involved. The following working hypotheses are put forward: When chromosome breaks in human lymphocytes occur in G0-G1, practically no sister chromatid reunion (SCR) takes place, whereas ends created by an S-G2 break show a considerable tendency to SCR. We propose further that chromosome aberrations in BS mainly result from breaks in S-G2, including possible U-type rejoining of sister chromatid exchanges. Fragments extra to an intact chromosome complement result from a chromatid break or an asymmetrical chromatid translocation in a previous mitosis.

With the help of BLM a possibility of non-receptor interaction between the blood plasma lipoproteides and isolated apoproteins immediately with the lipid part of plasmic membranes was shown. Incorporation of lipoproteides in BLM is of a cooperative character and induces cationic permeability in them. Specific interactions with the membranes of aterogenic and antiaterogenic classes of lipoproteides, the role of dimensions and surface charge of lipoproteide particles and of apoproteins and calcium ions in the course of incorporation are revealed. It is suggested that asymmetrical incorporation of a lipoproteide particle in the bilayer and a local increase of the membrane permeability for calcium results in the activation of the contractile system of the cortical layer and in the formation of endocytosis vacuole transporting the lipoproteide particles into the cell.

The fine structure and norepinephrine content of small granular vesicle-containing profiles were studied in normal and norepinephrine-depleted cerebral cortex of the turtle, Pseudemys. The cortex was fixed for electron microscopy with the KMnO4 procedure of Koda and Bloom ('77), while the norepinephrine content was assayed wit the radioenzymatic method of Coyle and Henry ('73). Green fluorescent fibers have been described by Parent and Poitras ('74) as located almost exclusively in the outer half of the molecular layer in turtle cortex. Small granular vesicle-containing profiles are found down to 100 microns below the pial surface, but over 50% lie within 20 microns of the surface. Within the outer 100 microns of cortex, the frequency of labeled varicosities is 1.39/1,000 microns2. The average area of the norepinephrine-containing varicosities is 0.61 microns2, and there is a mean of 18.4 vesicles per single section. The average number of large plus small vesicles in an entire varicosity was estimated to be 72. Synaptic membranes are not well-preserved with KMnO4 fixation, but good examples were found of small granular vesicle-containing profiles forming both symmetrical and asymmetrical membrane differentiations. Only a small percentage of the small granular vesicle profiles were associated with a synaptic membrane differentiation in single sections. When norepinephrine-fiber synapses are seen, they usually share a postsynaptic element with another unlabeled vesicle-containing profile. Normal turtle cortex contains an average norepinephrine concentration of 1.95 micrograms/gr, which is about eight times higher than in rat cortex. The ratio of norepinephrine to dopamine is about 18 to one, suggesting that dopamine is present predominantly in a precursor pool for norepinephrine. Small granular vesicle-containing profiles were eliminated after treatment with reserpine and 6-hydroxydopamine in concentrations that were shown to reduce norepinephrine concentration by 94% and 86%, respectively. The labeled varicosities were partially depleted by midbrain hemisection and by an inhibitor of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (FLA-63). The norepinephrine-containing varicosities are remarkably coextensive with the distribution of thalamic fibers, both in the total extent of cortex where they are found and in the depth of cortex where they terminate. The results support the idea that there is a close structural and functional association between locus coeruleus and thalamic fibers in cerebral cortex, and the apparent difference in frequency of synapses suggests that each fiber system exerts its influence on cortical cells in a different way.

Many comprehension studies have shown that children as late as age 6 ; 6 misinterpret object pronouns as co-referring with the referential subject about half the time. A recent review of earlier experiments testing children's interpretation of object pronouns in sentences with quantified subjects (Elbourne, 2005) also suggests that there is a 'Pronoun Interpretation Problem'. In contrast, two experiments addressing English children's pronoun production (Bloom, Barss, Nicol & Conway, 1994; de Villiers, Cahillane & Altreuter, 2006) show almost perfect usage. The aim of this study is to verify this asymmetry between pronoun production and pronoun comprehension for Dutch, and to investigate the effects of coherent discourse and topicality on pronoun production and comprehension. Employing a truth-value judgment task and an elicited production task, this study indeed finds such an asymmetry in 83 Dutch children (age range 4 ; 5-6 ; 6). When object pronouns were clearly established as the topic of the target sentence, the Pronoun Interpretation Problem dissolved entirely. These results are compatible with the asymmetrical grammar hypothesis of Hendriks & Spenader (2005/2006) and suggest, contrary to many previous claims, that children are highly proficient at using pragmatic clues in interpretation.
