The apparent water solubility of pentachlorophenol was measured at pH=6 and at 25 degrees C in pure water, aqueous solutions of three salts (NaCl, KNO(3) and CaCl(2) at 0.010, 0.10 and 1.0M) and in aqueous solutions of three fulvic acids samples extracted from a natural soil (sFA), composted sewage sludge (csFA) and composted livestock's material (lsFA). A solubility enhancement method was developed for the measurement of partition coefficients (K(oc), L/kg organic carbon). Pentachlorophenol associates strongly with the fulvic acid samples and the calculated K(oc) were the following (averages and standard deviations): (sFA) (211+/-22) x 10(2), (csFA) (253+/-26) x 10(2), (lsFA) (235+/-10) x 10(2). For comparison purposes the K(oc) for pyrene were also calculated for the three FA samples and were the following: (sFA) (119+/-10) x 10(2), (csFA) (239+/-21) x 10(2), (lsFA) (92+/-10) x 10(2). The analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) of the effect of the type of FA sample on the solubilization of pentachlorophenol and pyrene shows that this factor causes significant differences on the aqueous solubilization of these two organic substances.

This study aimed to investigate the biological response to hypoxia as a stimulus, as well as exercise- and vibration-induced shear stress, which is known to induce angiogenesis. Twelve male cyclists (27.8 +/- 5.4 yr) participated in this study. Each subject completed four cycle training sessions under normal conditions (NC) without vibration, NC with vibration, normobaric hypoxic conditions (HC) without vibration, and HC with vibration. Each session lasted 90 min, and sessions were held at weekly intervals in a randomized order. Five blood samples (pretraining and 0 h post-, 0.5 h post-, 1 h post-, and 4 h posttraining) were taken from each subject at each training session. Hypoxia was induced by a normobaric hypoxic chamber with an altitude of 2,500 m. The mechanical forces (cycling with or without vibration) were induced by a cycling ergometer. The parameters VEGF, endostatin, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) were analyzed using the ELISA method. VEGF showed a significant increase immediately after the exercise only with exogenously induced vibrations, as calculated with separate ANOVA analysis. Endostatin increased after training under all conditions. Western blot analysis was performed for the determination of endostatin corresponding to the 22-kDa cleavage product of collagen XVIII. This demonstrated elevated protein content for endostatin at 0 h postexercise. MMP-2 increased in three of the four training conditions. The exception was NC with vibration. MMP-9 reached its maximum level at 4 h postexercise. In conclusion, the results support the contention that mechanical stimuli differentially influence factors involved in the induction of angiogenesis. These findings may contribute to a broader understanding of angiogenesis.

Remineralization of eroded enamel by dentifrices containing similar sources/concentrations of fluoride was investigated in situ. Fifty-three subjects completed a double-blind crossover study with 3 randomly assigned dentifrice treatments: placebo (0 ppm F, PD); reference (1,450 ppm NaF, RD) and test (1,450 ppm NaF + 5% KNO(3), TD). Fluoride availability for each dentifrice was analyzed in vitro by standard tests (1-min fluoride release rate and enamel fluoride uptake). The subjects wore palatal appliances holding bovine enamel specimens previously eroded in vitro. Surface microhardness was determined before and after the in vitro erosive challenge, after in situ remineralization and after a second in vitro erosive challenge. ANOVA and pairwise comparisons were performed (alpha=0.05). TD was superior to RD in the fluoride release tests, but similar to RD in the enamel fluoride uptake test. The mean percent surface microhardness recovery was 21.9 (standard deviation 8.0) for PD, 28.6 (8.0) for RD and 36.0 (8.0) for TD. The mean percent relative erosion resistance change was -58.8 (12.7) for PD, -31.3 (12.7) for RD and -27.3 (12.6) for TD. Both fluoride-containing dentifrices provided superior remineralization (p<0.001) and erosion resistance (p<0.001) compared to PD. The percent surface microhardness recovery demonstrated by the TD was significantly greater than for the RD (p<0.001). There was no significant difference (p=0.073) between TD and RD in relative resistance to further erosive challenge. The results suggest that fluoride availability may be different in dentifrices with similar sources/concentrations of fluoride, providing different levels of remineralization of eroded enamel.
