We have previously reported that the activity in platelets of the important
antioxidant enzyme
glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is inversely correlated with computed tomographic (CT) measures of brain atrophy in a population of patients with chronic schizophrenia, suggesting that low GPx may be a vulnerability factor in those schizophrenic patients with structural brain abnormalities. The significance of this finding has now been explored in a larger clinical population by examining the relation of GPx and CT parameters to psychosocial variables and to the activity of platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO), which has also been reported to be altered in certain schizophrenic populations. In the present study, low platelet GPx and high brain atrophy were found to be associated with
DSM
-III diagnoses of nonparanoid schizophrenia, a high degree of chronicity, and a predominance of negative symptoms. Contrary to some literature reports, atrophy also correlated with age and length of illness among the schizophrenic patients, although the contribution of these factors was less than that of low GPx, which was itself not age dependent. The ventricle-brain ratio (VBR) and atrophy were highly correlated in a control group of affective disorder patients, but not in the schizophrenic group, where large VBRs were found predominantly in the
DSM
-III undifferentiated subgroup. The low-GPx/high-atrophy schizophrenic patients had normal platelet MAO levels, and MAO was significantly lower only in the paranoid subgroup, consistent with reported observations. There was no evidence for a neuroleptic-induced effect on either enzyme.

-IV major depressive disorder (MDD) was accompanied (OCD + MDD) or not (OCD - MDD). The MDA and
antioxidant enzyme
levels both in patients and controls were determined. SOD activity levels were significantly higher in the OCD + MDD group compared with the control and the OCD - MDD group. Although the OCD - MDD group had slightly higher SOD activity levels as compared with the controls, the difference was not statistically significant. GSH-Px activity levels were statistically significantly higher in both groups compared with controls. Likewise, there was a significant difference in GSH-Px activity levels between the OCD + MDD and OCD - MDD group. CAT activity levels were slightly higher in the OCD + MDD group compared with the OCD - MDD and control group. MDA levels in both groups were significantly higher than in controls. In addition, the difference in MDA levels between both groups was statistically significant. In conclusion, our results suggest that OCD is associated with free radicals and that it may be a heterogeneous subtype including some biological indications of anxiety and affective disorders. More comprehensive and detailed studies are needed to decipher the exact role of free radicals in OCD.

There is mounting evidence indicating that reactive free radical species (FRs) are involved in initiation and development of many different forms of human pathologies including psychiatric disorders. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether

(glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px; superoxide dismutase, SOD and catalase, CAT) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a product of lipid peroxidation, were associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study comprised 14 patients who had been diagnosed with PTSD according to
DSM
-IV criteria and met the admission criteria and 14 healthy controls. The activities of GSH-Px SOD, CAT and MDA were measured in both the patients and controls. In addition, all patients were assessed using the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS). The mean GSH-Px, SOD, CAT activities and MDA levels of the patient group did not differ from those of the controls. However, in patients, the GSH-Px and SOD activities were significantly and positively correlated with CAPS scores, while there was a trend toward positive correlations between CAPS scores and MDA or CAT. In conclusion, our results suggest that the production of FRs does not seem to be related to PTSD.

activities are associated with ADHD. The sample population consisted of thirty-five child or adolescent patients diagnosed with ADHD according to
DSM
-IV-TR criteria. Thirty-five healthy subjects also were included in the study as controls. Venous blood samples were collected, and NO pool and MDA levels as well as SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT activities were measured. NO and MDA levels of the patients were significantly higher than the controls. GSH-Px activities of the patients were significantly lower than the controls. CAT activities of the patients were higher than the controls; however, the difference was not statistically significant. There were no significant differences in SOD activity between the patient and control groups. Remarkably high levels of NO pool and MDA oxidants as well as low GSH-Px activities suggest an oxidative imbalance in paediatric patients with ADHD. CAT activities may be increased in response to increased oxidant levels.

-IV)" criteria by the "Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment and Education Centre-Ankara (AMATEM)". The control group had no addiction. In comparisons between the groups, a significant decrease in Cu,Zn-SOD activity and increases in MDA levels and MN frequency were observed in addicts. It can be concluded that opiates may cause oxidative stress and that antioxidant supplementation, in addition to pharmacological and psychiatric approaches, can reduce the toxicological effects of these opiates.
