Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don. plants were grown with NaCl and
CaCl2
in order to study the effect of
CaCl2
on NaCl-induced oxidative stress in terms of lipid peroxidation (TBARS content), H2O2 content, osmolyte concentration, proline (PRO)-metabolizing enzymes,
antioxidant enzyme
activities, and indole alkaloid accumulation. The plants were treated with solutions of 80 mM NaCl, 80 mM NaCl with 5 mM
CaCl2
and 5 mM
CaCl2
alone. Groundwater was used for irrigation of control plants. Plants were uprooted randomly on 90 days after sowing (DAS). NaCl-stressed plants showed increased TBARS, H2O2, glycine betaine (GB) and PRO contents, decreased proline oxidase (PROX) activity, and increased gamma-glutamyl kinase (gamma-GK) activity when compared to control. Addition of
CaCl2
to NaCl-stressed plants lowered the PRO concentration by increasing the level of PROX and decreasing the gamma-GK activities. Calcium ions increased the GB contents.
CaCl2
appears to confer greater osmoprotection by the additive role with NaCl in GB accumulation. The antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX) and catalase (CAT) were increased under salinity and further enhanced due to
CaCl2

-treated C. roseus plants showed an increase in total indole alkaloid content in shoots and roots when compared to NaCl-treated and untreated plants.

There is a growing body of evidence showing that vitamin A induces toxic effects in several experimental models and in human beings. In the present work, we have investigated the effects of short-term vitamin A supplementation on the adult rat liver redox status. We have found that vitamin A at therapeutic doses induces a hepatic oxidative insult. Furthermore, we have observed increased
antioxidant enzyme
activity in the liver of vitamin-A-treated rats. Additionally, some mitochondrial dysfunction was found since superoxide anion production was increased in vitamin-A-treated rat liver submitochondrial particles, which may be the result of impaired mitochondrial electron transfer chain activity, as assessed here. We have also isolated rat liver mitochondria and challenged it with 75 muM
CaCl2
, a non-oxidant agent that is able to induce mitochondrial oxidative stress indirectly. We have found that mitochondria isolated from vitamin-A-treated rat liver are more sensitive to
CaCl2
than control mitochondria regarding the redox status. Importantly, vitamin A seems to alter mitochondrial redox status independently of the participation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, which is activated by Ca2+ ions since cyclosporin A did not prevent the oxidative insult elicited by Ca2+ addition. Overall, we show here that mitochondria are a target of vitamin-A-associated toxicity also in vivo.

Few attempts have been made to study the alleviating effects of signal molecules on zoysiagrass (Zoysiajaponica) under drought stress.
Calcium chloride
has been shown to ameliorate the adverse effects of drought stress on many plants. It is necessary to investigate how to enhance drought tolerance of zoysiagrass using calcium chloride. The study elucidated the effects of calcium chloride on zoysiagrass under drought conditions by investigating the following parameters: biomass, chlorophyll (Chl) content, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant enzymes, proline content, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Experimental conditions consisted of an aqueous
CaCl2
solution at 5, 10, and 20 mM sprayed on zoysiagrass leaves for 3 d, following by an inducement of drought conditions by withholding water for 16 d. Under drought conditions, all
CaCl2
pretreatments were found to increase the above-ground fresh biomass, as well as below-ground fresh and dry biomass. The resulting Chl (a, b, a+b) contents of the 5 and 10 mM
CaCl2
pretreatment groups were higher than those of the control. In the later stages of drought conditions, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm was higher in leaves treated with 10 mM
CaCl2
