We investigated oxidative stress response and histopathological changes in the brain and kidney of the common carp after a 40-d exposure to CPF and
ATR
, alone or in combination, and a 20-d recovery. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were measured using standard assays. Our results indicated that exposure to
ATR
, CPF or a combination of the two for 40 d induced significant changes in
antioxidant enzyme
(SOD, CAT and GSH-Px) activities and MDA content in the brain and kidney of the common carp. Pathological changes included tissue damage that was more severe with increased of exposure dose. To our knowledge, this is the first report to study oxidative stress and histopathological effects caused by subchronic exposure to
ATR
, CPF and
ATR
/CPF combination on common carp. The information presented in this study may be helpful to understanding the mechanisms of
ATR
-, CPF- and
ATR
/CPF combination-induced oxidative stress in fish.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation has been known to cause skin damage, which is associated with oxidative stress, DNA damage, and apoptosis. Echinacoside is a phenylethanoid glycoside isolated from
Herba Cistanches
, which exhibits strong antioxidant activity. In this study, we evaluate the photoprotective effect of echinacoside on UVB-induced skin damage and explore the potential molecular mechanism. BALB/c mice and HaCaT cells were treated with echinacoside before UVB exposure. Histopathological examination was used to evaluate the skin damage. Cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels,
antioxidant enzyme
activities, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, DNA damage, and apoptosis were measured as well. Western blot was used to measure the expression of related proteins. The results revealed that pretreatment of echinacoside ameliorated the skin injury; attenuated oxidative stress, DNA damage, and apoptosis caused by UVB exposure; and normalized the protein levels of
ATR
, p53, PIAS3, hnRNP K, PARP, and XPA. To summarize, echinacoside is beneficial in the prevention of UVB-induced DNA damage and apoptosis of the skin
in vivo and in vitro.

The cold atmospheric-pressure plasma (CAPP) has become one of the recent effective decontamination technologies, but CAPP interactions with biological material remain the subject of many studies. The CAPP generates numerous types of particles and radiations that synergistically affect cells and tissues differently depending on their structure. In this study, we investigated the effect of CAPP generated by diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge on hyphae of Aspergillus flavus. Hyphae underwent massive structural changes after plasma treatment. Scanning electron microscopy showed drying hyphae that were forming creases on the hyphal surface.
ATR
-FTIR analysis demonstrated an increase of signal intensity for C=O and C-O stretching vibrations indicating chemical changes in molecular structures located on hyphal surface. The increase in membrane permeability was detected by the fluorescent dye, propidium iodide. Biomass dry weight determination and increase in permeability indicated leakage of cell content and subsequent death. Disintegration of nuclei and DNA degradation confirmed cell death after plasma treatment. Damage of plasma membrane was related to lipoperoxidation that was determined by higher levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive species after plasma treatment. The CAPP treatment led to rise of intracellular ROS levels detected by fluorescent microscopy using 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate. At the same time,
antioxidant enzyme
activities increased, and level of reduced glutathione decreased. The results in this study indicated that the CAPP treatment in A. flavus targeted both cell surface structures, cell wall, and plasma membrane, inflicting injury on hyphal cells which led to subsequent oxidative stress and finally cell death at higher CAPP doses.

Aluminium (Al) is reported to promote free radical production, decrease the
antioxidant enzyme
status and disturb the enzyme activity involved in acetylcholine metabolism leading to cognitive dysfunction that are strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. This work aimed at investigating the effect of Al-toxicity on synaptosomal membrane biophysical properties and lipid peroxidation during 65 days. We utilized
ATR
-IR spectroscopy to study the changes in membrane biochemical structure and biophysical properties of isolated rat cortical synaptosomes, and EPR spin trapping and labeling to follow NADPH oxidase activity and changes of membrane order parameter, respectively. The results showed increase in membrane fluidity and disorder in early 21d of AlCl

treatment, while after 42d the membrane rigidity, packing, and order increased. The late (65d) an increase in the amount of unsaturated fatty acids, the accumulation of lipid peroxide end products, and ROS production were detected in rat cortex synaptosomes mediated by Al toxicity and oxidative stress (OS). A dramatic increase was also detected in Ca
2+
level, synaptic membrane polarity, and EPR-detected order S-parameter. These outcomes strongly suggest that the synaptosomal membrane phospholipids underwent free radical attacks mediated by AlCl

due to greater NOX activity, and the release of synaptic vesicles into synaptic cleft might be hindered. The adopted spectroscopic techniques have shed light on the biomolecular structure and membrane biophysical changes of isolated cortical synaptosomes for the first time, allowing researchers to move closer to a complete understanding of pathological tissues.
