The distribution of nerve fibres immunoreactive to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP),
substance P
(SP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) was compared to the general neurochemical markers for nerves and neuroendocrine cells protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) and
neurone-specific enolase
(
NSE
), by use of the avidin-biotin peroxidase complex method in developing dental structures in rats aged 13 to 27 days. A substantially greater part of the nerve fibres was immunoreactive to CGRP and SP than to NPY. In the bell stage, nerve fibres immunoreactive to PGP 9.5, CGRP and SP were found in the dental follicle but not in the dental papilla and stellate reticulum. In the advanced bell stage, after initiation of dentine and enamel formation, PGP 9.5, CGRP- and SP-immunoreactive fibres were found in the dental papilla, while the first NPY-immunoreactive fibres were observed in the papilla when root formation started. Concomitant with the beginning of root development, a subodontoblastic nerve plexus was gradually formed and PGP 9.5-, CGRP- and SP-immunoreactive fibres were found within the dentinal tubules. From the start of root formation, CGRP-, SP- and NPY-immunoreactive nerves were shown in the developing periodontal ligament, although a mature distribution pattern was not observed until root formation was nearly completed. Ameloblasts, odontoblasts and cell-like structures in the outer enamel epithelium and within the dental lamina were PGP 9.5-immunoreactive at the bell stage. As the tooth matured, the immunolabelling gradually decreased, but was still present in some odontoblasts after tooth eruption.

-immunoreactive, cell-like structures were found in the periphery of the dental follicle, and persisted close to alveolar bone in the periodontal ligament when the tooth reached occlusion. Hence, it may be concluded that sensory nerves containing SP and CGRP are present in the pulp in advance of sympathetic nerves immunoreactive to NPY.

The endocrine cells and nerves of the respiratory tract of the reptile Podarcis hispanica were investigated by immunocytochemistry under light microscopy. A case of a parotid mass in a 2-year-old boy, postoperatively diagnosed as neuroblastoma, a rare tumour not previously reported in the parotid gland is presented. The neoplasm developed within the parotid gland as a painless mass without regional lymphadenopathy. Histopathologically, the tumour showed primitive nerve cells-neuroblasts-with round or oval dark basophilic nuclei and scanty cytoplasm. The cells were arranged in circular rosettes around an eosinophilic mass consisting of very fine filaments originating in the tumour cells or papillary configuration and sometimes scattered in the poorly developed stroma. The bronchiolar cells stained with S-100 antibody and demonstrated slender processes similar to dendritic cells, such as Langerhans' cells, and interdigitating reticulum cells, present in normal tissues as well as in certain tumors and inflammatory diseases. Manual counting of the S-100 positive cells and fibers revealed both of these to be significantly increased in SIDS infants as compared to age-matched control infants. Morphologically, the bronchiolar dendritic cells closely resembled Langerhans' cells and therefore may have similar immunologic functions, such as antigen presentation and viral and neoantigen immunosurveillance. We hypothesize that the proliferation of these dendritic cells in SIDS victims is a result of exposure to environmental antigens, resulting in a thickening of the bronchiolar walls, narrowing of the lumen, and reduction in airflow, thus causing a chronic or persistent hypoxia.

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is an APUDoma (APUD refers to amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation) arising from the parafollicular cells. Diarrhoea has been reported in some 30% of patients, variously attributed to excess production of calcitonin (CT), serotonin (5-HT), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) or other factors. The regulatory factors in MTC were examined employing immunocytochemistry and RIA to tumours and their extracts. The patients were followed up for more than 15 years. (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), neuropeptide Y (NPY), the neuronal form of nitric oxide synthase (n-NOS), and, enzyme histochemically, NADPH-diaphorase. Nerve fibers approach the basal membrane of the lingual epithelium around the 7th postovulatory week and invade the epithelium of papilla-like structures at the 8th week, but some also penetrate the basal membrane of the non-papillary epithelium. They are in close contact with slender epithelial cells that are considered to be the taste bud's progenitor cells. Early human taste buds situated at the anterior part of the tongue do not necessarily require a dermal (later fungiform) papilla. The NADPH-diaphorase reaction revealed positive results in dermal nerve fibers, but the immunohistochemical reaction against n-NOS was negative. Immunohistochemical detection of neuropeptides and vasoactive substances rendered negative results for developmental stages of 7-18 postovulatory weeks. By the 18th week, only SP was detected in dermal papillae, but not in the vicinity of taste buds' primordia. Thus, autonomic and somatosensory nerves seem not to play a key role in formation and maintenance of early human taste buds.

A 44-year-old woman with Marie-Bamberger's syndrome and diabetes insipidus had a lung tumour with mediastinal metastases, but no signs of metastases to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. Enkephalin (ENK) immunoreactivity was localised in different neuronal subpopulations of the myenteric plexus in the guinea-pig gastric fundus using immunohistochemistry for
neurone-specific enolase

), ENK, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT),
substance P
(SP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), calretinin (CALRET), and somatostatin (SOM). NADPH-diaphorase staining was used to label nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing neurones. ENK was observed in 44% of the myenteric neurones. The major ENK-positive subpopulations were ChAT/ENK (35% of ENK-positive neurones), ChAT/SP/ENK (26%), NOS/NPY/ENK (22%) and ChAT/SP/ENK/CALRET (9%). The projection pathways of these ENK-positive subpopulations to the circular muscle and the mucosa were determined using retrograde labelling with DiI in organ culture followed by immunohistochemistry. Of myenteric neurones retrogradely labelled from the mucosa and the circular muscle, 13% and 48% exhibited ENK immunoreactivity, respectively. Three major ENK-positive subpopulations innervating the mucosa or circular muscle were identified: ascending ChAT/SP/ENK (7% of all mucosa neurones; 24% of all circular muscle neurones), ascending ChAT/ENK (4%; 15%) and descending NOS/NPY/ENK (1%; 8%) neurones. Only very few CALRET- or SOM-positive neurones projected to the mucosa or circular muscle. ChAT/SP/ENK and ChAT/ENK neurones might function as ascending excitatory muscle motor neurones, whereas NOS/NPY/ENK neurones are most likely descending inhibitory muscle motor neurones. The relatively few ENK-positive mucosa neurones do not favour a major involvement of ENK-positive myenteric neurones in the control of gastric mucosa activity.
