In this study of masticatory maturation, the ontogeny of the histochemical fiber type composition of musculus masseter is examined in the omnivorous miniature swine (Sus scrofa). Fiber type characteristics are interpreted by comparison with electromyography (EMG) recorded during feeding behavior. Similar to locomotion studies, the results suggest a correspondence between the composition and arrangement of motor units and their recruitment pattern. Serial sections of masseter muscles from 10 minipigs, ranging from 2 weeks to slightly over 1 year of age, were stained for myosin
adenosine triphosphatase
(mATPase) activity to distinguish slow-twitch from fast-twitch fibers, and for nicotinamide adenosine dehydrogenase-tetrazolium
reductase
to assess the aerobic capacity of the same fibers. Although maintaining a uniformly high aerobic capacity throughout ontogeny and in adult animals, a transition is observed in the relative proportions of fast- and slow-twitch fibers. The primarily fast-twitch neonatal pig masseter eventually comprises approximately 25-30% slow-twitch fibers in adults, with a higher predominance of slow fibers in the deep (vs. superficial) and anterior (vs. posterior) regions of the muscle. Furthermore, while individual fibers of adult masseters generally stain for either alkaline- or acid-stable mATPase activity, a substantial proportion of cells in developing animals exhibits the presence of both isozymes. EMG results indicate functional heterogeneity within the masseter of adult pigs. During chewing, when pig chow is replaced by cracked corn, EMG activity in the deep portion of the muscle either decreases or increases slightly. In the superficial portion, however, muscle amplitudes become dramatically higher for corn, surpassing levels generated for chewing the less obdurate chow. These results are consistent with a behavioral transition from neonatal suckling to sustained mastication of foods of more complex textures eaten by adult pigs. The relationship between these fiber type and EMG results for pig masseter corresponds to those pertaining to motor unit recruitment in the extensor muscles of locomotion. Implications of this work for the evolutionary morphology of mastication also are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of calorie restriction and exercise on hindlimb histochemistry and fiber type in Fischer 344 rats as they advanced from adulthood through senescence. At 10 months of age, animals were divided into sedentary fed ad libitum, exercise (18 m/min, 8% grade, 20 min/day, 5 days/week) fed ad libitum, and calorie restricted by alternate days of feeding. , and Periodic Acid Shiff histochemical stains were performed on plantaris and soleus muscles. The results indicated that aging resulted in a progressive decline in plantaris Type I muscle fiber in sedentary animals, while exercise resulted in maintenance of these fibers. The percent of plantaris Type II fibers increased between 10 and 24 months of age. Exercise also resulted in a small, but significant, increase in the percentage of plantaris Type IIa fibers at 24 months of age. The soleus fiber distribution for Type I fibers was unaffected by increasing age in all groups of animals. The implications of these results suggest the implementation of exercise as a lifestyle modification as early as possible.

This study verified the effect of unilateral teeth extraction on the suprahyoid muscles in gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). Ten adult male gerbils weighing about 50g had induced occlusal alterations by upper molar teeth extraction on the left side while the other ten animals were only subjected to surgical stress, control group. After 60 days, animals of both groups, experimental and control had the suprahyoid muscles removed and processed for histological and histochemical (

pH 4.7 activity in the control group of the digastric, milohyoid and geniohyoid muscles presented a small area of type I fiber and a larger area of type IIa fibers; in the experimental group, significant contractile capacity alteration was not observed. Samples of the digastric, milohyoid and geniohyoid muscles, after SDH activity, showed a small area with high metabolic activity fibers, and a large area with intermediary and low metabolic activity fibers in the control group. The milohyoid muscle of the experimental group presented low metabolic fibers in a reduced area, in both sides, however without significant difference. In the experimental group, high metabolic fibers were observed on the left side in a reduced area in the geniohyoid muscle, but without statistical significance. Thus, the geniohyoid muscle did not change the metabolic activity after occlusal alteration. In conclusion, 60 days of unilateral malocclusion induced was able to alter the fibers oxidative activity of the suprahyoid muscles, however, it does not affect the contractile property of the fibers. The digastric muscle has adequate fibers to produce fast contraction and able to resist to fatigue in intermediate degrees, but became more fatigable after unilateral exodontia.

Pelvic and perineal striated muscles are relevant for reproduction and micturition in female mammals. Damage to these muscles is associated with pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. The aim of the present study was to determine the fiber type composition of a perineal muscle, the bulbospongiosus, and a pelvic muscle, the pubococcygeus. Results showed that the content of glycolytic fibers in the bulbospongiosus muscle was higher than that of oxidative fibers. Meanwhile, the opposite was true for the pubococcygeus. In the bulbospongiosus muscle, the content of type IIb muscle fibers was higher than that of type I, but was similar to that of type IIa/IId. In contrast, the content of each fiber type was similar in the pubococcygeus muscle. The relative proportion of fibers in bulbospongiosus and pubococcygeus muscles is consistent with their function during voiding and storage phases of micturition.

The aim of this study was to describe de fiber composition in the thigh muscles of grass cutter (
Thryonomys swinderianus
, Temminck 1827). Ten 4 to 6-month-old (3 to 4 kg) male grasscutter were used in this study. Eleven skeletal muscles of the thigh [M. biceps femoris (BF), M. rectus femoris (RF), M. vastus lateralis (VL), M. vastus medialis (VM), M. tensor fasciae latae (TFL), M. semitendinosus (ST), M. semimembranosus (SM), M. semimembranosus accessorius (SMA), M. Sartorius (SRT), M. pectineus (PCT), M. adductor magnus (AM)] were collected after animals euthanasia and examined by light microscopy. Three muscle fiber types (I, IIB and IIA) were found in these muscles using enzyme histochemical techniques [myosine

The present study was designed to determine whether or not myofiber types were distributed uniformly across the diameter of the thigh muscles of chickens. Cross sections from middle portions of muscles were used histochemically to examine differences in distribution and composition of myofiber types in the muscles.
