Effects of tinctura arnica on arginase,
adenosine triphosphatase
, glucose-6-phosphatase and
5'-nucleotidase
activities of rats liver in case of experimental toxic hepatitis have been studied. Toxic hepatitis was caused by 2 times interstomach administration of 0.25 ml oil solution of carbon tetrachloride per 100 g of animal weight. 20 mkl/100 g of tinctura arnica was administered every day per os for 14 days. The enzyme activities have been investigated at 3, 7 and 17 days. A significant demention of a studied hydrolytic enzyme activities in rats liver at intoxication of the body by CCI4 has been shown. It has been established that tinctura arnica administered per os to intoxicated animals sped up the normalization of hydrolytic enzyme activities in rat liver.

Ultrastructural and light microscopic cytochemical methods were used to study the distribution and changes in distribution of three phosphatase enzymes:
5'-nucleotidase
(5N); thiamine pyrophosphatase (TPP); and
adenosine triphosphatase
(
ATP
) in the rat endometrium during early pregnancy up to the time of blastocyst attachment. The authors were particularly interested in changes in the apical plasma membrane and reaction product for all three enzymes was clearly localized along this membrane especially on day 1 of pregnancy. However, the three enzymes showed markedly different patterns of organization of reaction product at later times during early pregnancy. 5N, while showing a continuous lining along the microvilli on day 1 was virtually undetectable by day 6. TPP was also strongly present apically on day 1, but reaction product was not always found as a continuous lining. Again, by day 6, there was no presence of this enzyme along the apical surface.

differed from the other two in that it produced a strong, and relatively unchanged reaction product along the apical plasma membrane from day 1 through to day 6 of pregnancy. The changes in distribution of these enzymes was particularly obvious at the electron microscopic level and we consider their contribution to the process of 'plasma membrane transformation' of early pregnancy.

The influence of whole-cell and acellular pertussis vaccines, introduced both alone and in combination with N-acetylglucosaminylmuramyl-2-alanine-D-isoglutamine (GMDP) on the activity of two enzymes of peritoneal exudate macrophages (

and Na+K(+)-
adenosine triphosphatase
) was studied. The study revealed that both pertussis vaccines exhibited immunomodulating properties, these properties being most pronounced in whole-cell pertussis vaccine. The use of GMDP in combination with pertussis vaccines led to changes in the enzymatic activity of peritoneal exudate macrophages, which was indicative of a decrease in the immunomodulating action of pertussis preparations.

in uterine epithelial cells in response to the ovarian hormones, oestrogen, progesterone or a combination of both used in different regimes on ovariectomised rats. Reaction product for all four enzymes was clearly localised in the epithelial cells, especially with oestrogen priming. However, the four enzymes showed markedly different patterns of organisation of reaction product in response to other hormonal treatments. Our findings clearly show that the expression of these enzymes is under ovarian hormonal control. However, while all of the enzymes are upregulated by oestrogen, the response to progesterone is variable, which can upregulate or downregulate different enzymes. The findings are particularly obvious at the electron microscopic level on the apical plasma membrane of the uterine epithelial cells, which was the main focus of our study.

P-gp, energy-dependent efflux transporter protein, is instrumental to the barrier function. Several findings recently reported indicate that endothelial P-gp contributes to efflux of undesirable substances such as beta-amyloid protein from the brain or periarterial interstitial fluid, while P-gp likely plays a crucial role in the genesis of multiple vascular abnormalities that accompany hypertension. In this review, influx and efflux mechanisms of drugs at the BBB are also reviewed and how medicines pass the BBB to reach the brain parenchyma is discussed.

and glucose-6-phosphatase in the organs and tissues of a viviparous monogenean, Macrogyrodactylus clarii Gussev, 1961, from the gills of the North African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) in Egypt. The following organs and tissues were studied: head region, anterior adhesive glands, mouth region, pharynx, intestine, testis, vesicula seminalis, male accessory gland, male accessory reservoir, copulatory organ, receptaculum seminis, egg-cell forming region, embryonic cells, excretory system, nerve cells, haptor, muscle fibres and subtegumental cell bodies (cytons). The enzymes showed marked differences in their activities among the studied organs and tissues. Alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activities were detected in many organs and tissues, while the activities of
adenosine triphosphatase

and glucose-6-phosphatase were restricted to a few organs. Although no positive reaction for any enzyme was observed in the anterior adhesive gland cells, a positive reaction for acid phosphatase was detected in the anterior adhesive areas. The distribution of the enzymes in the tissues and organs of M clarii is compared with those of other monogeneans, including other gyrodactylids parasitizing the same host fish. Genistein (4',5,7-trihydroxyisoflavone) is naturally present in plants of the soy family and is known to have various pharmacological activities, such as anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, etc. The phytoestrogen is one of the major isoflavones found in some medicinal plants having anthelmintic properties. This review describes the putative role of genistein as an anthelmintic, which has been tested on some helminth parasites in vitro. Genistein has been shown to cause paralysis and alterations in the tegument and tegumental enzymes (acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase,

) of helminth parasites. Alterations in the activities of several enzymes associated with the coordination system (specifically non-specific esterases, acetylcholine esterase, and nitric oxide synthase), and changes in the concentration of nitric oxide, cGMP, free amino acid pool, and tissue ammonia are observed in helminth parasites treated with genistein. The phytoestrogen also affects the carbohydrate metabolism by altering the activities of key enzymes involved in glycogen- and glucose-metabolism of a cestode parasite.
