Eight hundred broilers were examined to define the reference values of nine blood constituents (total proteins, albumin, total and free cholesterol, triglycerides,
aspartate aminotransferase
(
AST
), alkaline phosphatase (ALP),
calcium
, and phosphorus). The broilers, coming from 20 different commercial poultry operations, were equally divided into different groups according to age (21 and 45 days), strain (Arbor Acres and Hybro), sex, and sampling season (summer or winter). Age and sampling season were the variation sources that most influenced the values of the hematochemical variables examined. The interaction of age with strain influenced total proteins total and free cholesterol, triglycerides, and ALP. The interaction of age with sampling season influenced all hematochemical constituents except triglycerides. Reference limits defined by .975 and .025 fractiles were computed for each blood constituent according to the significance of different variation sources and their combinations. Reference limits defined herein could be used as indicators of metabolic and health conditions of a poultry farm.

Postmortem biochemical indices may provide a useful adjunct to morphological studies in the identification of antemortem brain insult. We studied 34 routine medico-legal cases categorising them into one of four diagnostic groups. There were 11 cases of head trauma, 7 of 'hypoxia' (3 hangings and 4 carbon monoxide or drug poisonings), 7 sudden cardiac deaths and 9 miscellaneous cases. Chewing sticks or Meswaks are used for teeth cleaning in many parts of the world. They contain substances that may reduce caries and periodontal disease. The present study consisted of 2 parts. In a short-term experiment, volunteers chewed on an inert eliciting agent (pyrogen-free rubber) and then a piece of Meswak, each for 5 min. For the medium-term experiment, volunteers brushed with either Meswak or a conventional toothbrush 5 x a day for 2 weeks. Saliva produced immediately after chewing Meswak showed statistically significant increases in
calcium
and chloride, but decreases in phosphate and pH as compared with controls. In the medium-term experiment, saliva samples collected 4 h after the last use of Meswak or toothbrush showed no significant differences in any of the components examined (
calcium
, magnesium, chloride, phosphate, IgA, IgG, lactate dehydrogenase and
aspartate transaminase
). Gingival and plaque indices, however, were significantly lower after brushing with Meswak. Salivary
calcium
promotes mineralization of tooth enamel and chloride inhibits calculus formation. Our results thus indicate that Meswak releases substances into saliva that could improve oral health.
Calcium
and chloride values were similar to those of controls after 4 h and thus frequent use of Meswak may be necessary to maintain a favorable salivary environment.

The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1967 and Amendments of 1988 (CLIA '67 and CLIA '88) were enacted to ensure that clinical laboratories within the U.S. provide a quality of service that meets clinical needs for good patient care. Approved proficiency-testing programs are to judge the quality of laboratory testing by promulgated performance criteria. We examine the quality of analytical results reported in 1991 to the New York State Department of Health Proficiency Testing program in light of these criteria and analytical goals, based on medical usefulness. In addition to the normal carboxylation reaction, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase from Zea mays catalyzes a HCO3(-)-dependent hydrolysis of phosphoenolpyruvate to pyruvate and Pi. Two independent methods were used to establish this reaction. First, the formation of pyruvate was coupled to lactate dehydrogenase in assay solutions containing high concentrations of L-glutamate and
aspartate aminotransferase
. Under these conditions, oxalacetic acid produced in the carboxylation reaction was efficiently transaminated, and decarboxylation to form spurious pyruvate was negligible. Second, sequential reduction of oxalacetate and pyruvate was achieved by initially running the reaction in the presence of malate dehydrogenase with NADH in excess over phosphoenolpyruvate. After the reaction was complete, lactate dehydrogenase was added, thus giving a measure of pyruvate concentration. At pH 8.0 in the presence of Mg2+, the rate of phosphoenolpyruvate hydrolysis was 3-7% of the total reaction rate. The hydrolysis reaction catalyzed by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase was strongly metal dependent, with rates decreasing in the order Ni2+ greater than Co2+ greater than Mn2+ greater than Mg2+ greater than

. These results suggest that the active site metal ion binds to the enolate oxygen, thus stabilizing the proposed enolate intermediate. The more stable the enolate, the less reactive it is toward carboxylation and the greater the opportunity for hydrolysis.

cycling was accompanied by down regulation or inhibition of the creatine kinase system. Mild cardiac hypertrophy was induced by volume overload; 2% salt was added to the diet of 2-week-old turkey poults for 4 weeks. Compared with age-matched controls, volume overload resulted in 14.3% increase in heart weight and 21.5% increase in heart-to-body weight ratios. Blood samples were collected from v. jugularis in five-day intervals from parturition to postpartum day 45 in the rearing conditions of a dairy cow production herd, consisting of 10 groups with 10 pluriparous cows each (crossbreds of Bohemian Pied cattle with Holstein-Friesian cattle). In blood serum the following activities were determined photometrically:

--AST (0.36-0.47 mukat.l-1), gamma-glutamyl transferase--GMT (0.50-0.83 mukat.l-1) and lactate dehydrogenase--LD (7.22-9.10 mukat.l-1); their average values were at an almost constant level. Only did AST and GMT values decrease slightly from day 25 after parturition. The glucose average content on the day of parturition (4.07 mmol.l-1) steeply decreased to postpartum day 5 (2.79 mmol.l-1), and later on, it increased irregularly. The average values of total protein (66.7-73.2 g per 1) slightly increased from postpartum day 20. The values of urea (2.33-2.37 mmol.l-1) and bilirubin (3.49-5.15 mmol.l-1) did not show any larger changes in dependence on the time elapsing from parturition. The average content of creatinine (124-162 mmol.l-1) increased irregularly from postpartum day 15 and then it decreased. Cholesterol concentrations were gradually increasing from 2.58 mmol.l-1 on the day of parturition to 4.99 mmol.l-1 on day 45 after parturition. The average contents of
calcium
