Eight Bonsmara bulls and eight Bonsmara heifers, having masses of between 210 and 266 kg when selected, were randomly allocated to four groups, each comprising two bulls and two heifers. Group 1 received 0.6 mg of copper (Cu)/kg of body mass per day (bm/d), group 2, 10 mg of Cu/kg of bm/d and group 3, 20 mg of Cu/kg of bm/d as a copper sulphate solution, given orally, 5 d a week over 745 d. Group 4 was the control group. One bull from group 3 was euthanased on day 679 of the trial, a heifer from group 3 and a bull from group 2, on day 695 of the trial, and a heifer from group 2, on day 731 of the trial, after they had shown clinical signs. activity, blood urea nitrogen, and plasma copper, zinc and

concentrations were monitored. Live mass was recorded weekly to determine any effect on mass gain. The liver and kidney copper, zinc,

and managanese concentrations at the time of death or slaughter are given. From the results it was concluded that subclinical damage to the liver and eventual copper toxicity can occur when cattle are continually exposed to oral doses > or = 12 mg of Cu/kg of bm/d. It was also concluded that cattle can probably tolerate oral doses of < or = 0.6 mg of Cu/kg of bm/d for an indefinite period, provided there are no other sources of copper, such as may occur with air-pollution, or provided no other adverse mineral interactions occur, such as may occur with molybdenum deficiency.

Anthropometric, anatomical, hematological and biochemical reference values were estimated in clinically healthy male and female 9-month-old silver foxes. The coefficients of variation of anthropometric and anatomical measurements for 9-month-old silver foxes were as low as previously reported for adult foxes. However, in relation to body size, all measurements were smaller. Compared with adult silver foxes, higher values were observed in serum levels of triglyceride, phospholipid, beta-lipoprotein, blood urea nitrogen and total protein. From 1984 through 1992, staff at The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC, Sausalito, California, USA) examined 207 northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) with a condition of unknown etiology called northern elephant seal skin disease (NESSD). The skin lesions were characterized by patchy to extensive alopecia and hyperpigmentation, punctate or coalescing epidermal ulceration, and occasionally, massive skin necrosis. Microscopic lesions included ulcerative dermatitis with hyperkeratosis, squamous metaplasia and atrophy of sebaceous glands. All diseased seals were less than 2 years of age and suffered from emaciation, depression, and dehydration. Mortality from septicemia increased significantly with severity of skin ulceration. Compared to 14 apparently unaffected seals, diseased seals had depressed levels of circulating thyroxine, triiodothyronine, retinol, serum

Etiology of this syndrome remains unknown, but the possibility of PCB toxicosis cannot be ruled out.

Death from ferric chloride poisoning has never been reported in Taiwan. We report a fatality from the suicidal ingestion of ferric chloride solution used as an etching agent for printed circuitry. A 25-y-old woman presented with vomiting after ingestion of 200 ml ferric chloride solution (pH 1.0). She had hypoxemia and severe metabolic acidosis with respiratory alkalosis initially. Three hours after her ingestion she presented with drowsy consciousness, tachycardia, tachypnea and protracted vomiting. Laboratory studies showed leukocytosis, elevated glucose,

, amylase, lactate dehydrogenase, and total bilirubin, coagulation defect and hemolysis. Aspiration pneumonia and vision loss were also noted. Newborn suckling Simmentaler calves (10 males and 9 females) in a cow-calf operation were examined from birth up to the age of 3 months. The average daily gain from 47 to 120 kg was 0.86 kg. Except for higher average daily weight gains and insulin-like growth factor-I concentrations and lower thyroid hormone levels in male than female calves, there were no significant sex differences. Plasma glucose, total protein and immunoglobulin G concentrations increased on day 1 of life, thrombocyte number and plasma triglyceride concentrations rose during the first 7 days, whereas lymphocyte and monocyte percentage and plasma inorganic phosphorus, phospholipid, cholesterol and albumin concentrations increased during the first 14 or 21 days and then remained elevated. Eosinophil percentage increased after 3 weeks and insulin-like growth factor-I concentrations increased over the whole growth period.
