A trial was conducted with 16 cows divided into control and test group (eight cows in either); since day 57.6 +/- 21.1 before parturition, test cows were given feed rations for 107 days which contained 16.0 kg clover-grass silage a day, treated with 3 l acrylic acid per t ensiled matter. Control group of cows was administered feed rations containing silage treated with 4 l formic acid per 1 t ensiled matter from day 55.5 +/- 21.9. activity were found to be higher. In this period in urine the pH value and net acid-base output were lower, while the inorganic phosphorus concentration was higher. No difference were observed in colostrum density, liveweight of born calves and in the target metabolic parameters in the blood (plasma) of calves. In the 30-day period of investigation the cows of test group gave an average daily milk yield lower by 1.5 l (in comparison with control cows). The residues of acrylic acid (method sensitivity of 1.0 mg acrylic acid in 1 l sample) were not detected in their colostrum and milk.

Effects of administration of triflupromazine were evaluated in 11 adult domesticated camels (Camelus dromedarius) weighing 403 +/- 29.5 kg (Mean +/- SE). Six camels were used to evaluate sedative properties of the drug and its effects on haematological and blood biochemical parameters. In the remaining 5 camels, effects on haemodynamics, acid base status and blood gases were studied. In all the animals triflupromazine was administered intramuscularly in the gluteal region at the rate of 2 mg/kg. Camels voluntarily sat down 48.9 +/- 5.4 min after administration of the drug but stood up again if disturbed. Drowsiness, drooping of lower lip and salivation were evident. The animals stood on their own and started walking with ataxia after 159 +/- 7 min and recovered completely from the effect of drug within 259 +/- 23 min. The drug caused a significant tachycardia and a moderate hypotension. The decrease in central venous pressure was also significant. Milk production of dairy cows in six herds was increased by approximately 15% by the administration of recombinantly derived bST in a sustained-release vehicle (somidobove, Eli Lilly/Elanco, Indianapolis, IN) at 28-d intervals, which commenced at 52 to 104 d postpartum. Milk composition, acidity, flavor, and growth of commercial lactic acid starter cultures were unaffected by somidobove treatment. Recombinantly derived somidobove has been judged in Czechoslovakia to be effective and safe for cows and the environment. Edible products from the treated cows are safe for human consumption.

Rats were fed or fasted for 24 h and hepatocytes isolated and cold stored in UW solution for 24 and 48 hours. Viability of the cells was analyzed by LDH release after 2 hours incubation in L15 with O2. Also, rabbits were fed, fasted (48 h) or

fed (48 h) and livers cold stored for 6, 24 and 48 h in UW solution. Functions of the livers were analyzed by isolated perfusion for 2 hours. Hepatocytes from fasted rats released significantly more LDH than hepatocytes from fed rats after 24 and 48 h cold storage. In rabbit livers, fasting depleted glycogen by 85% but had no effect on ATP or glutathione concentration. Hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS), an anticaking agent for mixed feed, was added to the diets of growing wethers (mean body weight, 34.0 kg) and was evaluated for its ability to diminish the clinical signs of aflatoxicosis. The experimental design consisted of 4 treatment groups of 5 wethers each, consuming concentrations of 0 g of HSCAS and 0 g of aflatoxin (AF)/kg of feed (control; group 1); 20 g of HSCAS/kg (2.0%; group 2), 2.6 mg of AF/kg (group 3); or 20 g of HSCAS (2.0%) plus 2.6 mg of AF/kg (group 4). Wethers were maintained in indoor pens, with feed and water available ad libitum for 42 days. Lambs were observed twice daily and weighed weekly, and blood samples were obtained every 2 weeks for hematologic and serum biochemical analyses and for measurement of mitogen-induced lymphocyte-stimulation index. At the termination of the study, wethers were euthanatized and necropsied. Body weight gain was diminished significantly (P less than 0.05) by consumption of 2.6 mg of AF/kg of feed, whereas body weight of lambs consuming HSCAS plus AF did not differ from that of control wethers. We reviewed the results of preoperative screening laboratory tests in asymptomatic healthy patients who underwent elective surgical procedures at our institution in 1988. Substantially abnormal results were found in 160 of 3,782 patients. All such abnormalities involved five tests:

, potassium, platelet count, and hemoglobin. Thirty of the abnormal test results were predictable on the basis of the history or physical examination. The abnormal test result prompted further assessment in 47 patients. No surgical procedure was delayed, and no association was noted between adverse outcome and any preoperative laboratory abnormality. Because of our findings in this analysis and similar studies on specific tests from other institutions, we no longer require preoperative laboratory screening tests for healthy patients.

Nineteen purebred Beagles of various ages (4, 5, 13, and 47 weeks) were inoculated with North American Trypanosoma cruzi isolates obtained from an opossum (Tc-O), an armadillo (Tc-A), or a dog (Tc-D). Dogs were grouped on the basis of clinical outcome of infection. During the acute stage of disease, dogs of group 1 (n = 7 inoculated with Tc-O or Tc-A) died or were euthanatized because of the severity of disease. Dogs of group 2 (n = 5 inoculated with Tc-O or Tc-A) developed acute disease, but survived to develop chronic disease. Dogs of group 3 (n = 7 Tc-D-inoculated dogs) developed neither acute nor chronic disease. Dogs of group 4 (n = 4--2 dogs 13 weeks old and 2 dogs 47 weeks old) served as noninoculated controls. Clinical signs associated with severe acute myocarditis developed in dogs of groups 1 and 2 between postinoculation day (PID) 15 and 28. The effects of ingesting a

polymer solution (GP) or water (W) on plasma pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) and pyridoxal (PL) concentrations were compared in six men (age: 30 +/- 2 y; VO2max: 57.4 +/- 3.2 mL.kg-1.min-1) under running (R) and control (C) conditions. Subjects ran for 2 h at 60-65% of VO2max for R and remained standing for C. For both R and C, 200 mL W or GP was ingested before (0-time) and every 30 min while running (30, 60, and 90 min). Plasma PLP decreased to 95% and 87% of 0-time at 180 min for WC and GPC and increased to 126% and 119% at 90 min and to 124% and 119% at 120 min for WR and GPR. By 60 min postrun, plasma PLP was 98% (WR) and 101% (GPR) of 0-time. There were no significant differences between W and GP conditions. Changes in PLP were not related to plasma volume or blood
