The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of two diluents, one with and the other without Orvus ES paste, and three methods of cryopreservation on the quality of dog semen after thawing. The investigation was carried out on 126 ejaculates collected from 37 dogs. In Expt 1, sperm-rich fractions of ejaculates were frozen in 0.25 ml minitubes and pellets. In Expt 2, each sperm-rich fraction of ejaculate was divided and extended in two diluents, one with and the other without Orvus ES paste. Samples of semen were frozen in pellets and 0.5 ml French straws. Motility, percentage of spermatozoa with normal acrosomes and longevity of spermatozoa were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in semen samples frozen in pellets than in samples frozen in 0.25 ml minitubes.

The effects of ionophore supplementation on selected serum constituents of sheep consuming locoweed were investigated. Sixteen sheep were allotted by weight to a 2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments: 1) no locoweed, no lasalocid, 2) no locoweed, 0.75 mg lasalocid/kg BW, 3) 0.5 mg swainsonine/kg BW, no lasalocid, 4) 0.5 mg swainsonine/kg BW, 0.75 mg lasalocid/kg BW. Swainsonine was provided by locoweed (Oxytropissericea), and sheep were fed a blue grama based diet at 2.5% BW for a 35 d treatment period. Diets were formulated to be isocaloric and isonitrogenous. A potential influence of idraparinux--a synthetic analogue of the pentasaccharide sequence in heparins--on plasma liver enzyme levels was analysed in 37 patients suffering from deep vein thrombosis and participating in the PERSIST trial. Plasma gamma-glutamyl-transferase,
aspartate aminotransferase
and alanine aminotransferase were determined prior to enoxaparin treatment (screening), prior to randomization (baseline) and once weekly during the 12-week treatment period. Patients were initially treated with weight-adjusted enoxaparin for 4-7 days and then randomized to either idraparinux (2.5, 5, 7.5 or 10 mg) or warfarin. Gamma-glutamyl-transferase was significantly increased after administration of enoxaparin at the baseline visit (P = 0.004) and in week 2 (P = 0.009) to return to screening levels in week 3 for the remaining study period (all P > 0.05).

(P = 0.001) and alanine aminotransferase (P < 0.001) were significantly increased at the baseline visit and returned to screening values at week 2 for the remaining study period (all P > 0.05). There was no significant difference between the mean values of plasma liver enzymes of the four idraparinux groups and the warfarin group in all 13 measurements. We concluded that idraparinux in contrast to enoxaparin does not increase plasma liver enzymes significantly.

Activities of several metabolic enzymes show distinct patterns of zonation along the intestinal tract of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus). Zonation is species and enzyme specific, with different metabolic activities concentrated in specific areas, and few generalizations can be made. The rockfish show the smallest degree of zonation, with highest activities in the third quarter of the intestine, and shallow gradients to either side, and a general upswing in activity towards the distal end. In the trout, mitochondrial enzyme activities (citrate synthase, glutamate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase) are highest in the pyloric caeca and decrease along the length of the small intestine. This pattern is accentuated for malic enzyme and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase. These enzymes drop precipitously in activity after the first few sections of the small intestine, while other NADP-linked dehydrogenases (isocitrate dehydrogenase, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase) show moderate activity in pyloric caeca and peak toward the distal section of the small intestine. In tilapia, glutamate dehydrogenase shows a similar decrease as in trout, but citrate synthase peaks towards the distal sections. NADP-dependent dehydrogenases reveal distinct patterns, peaking in different sections of the intestine-malic enzyme in the proximal midsection, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the distal mid-section, and isocitrate dehydrogenase in the anal section. Enzyme activities in the stomach of trout and tilapia also show zonation, with the midsection generally displaying the highest activities. A 5-day treatment of tilapia with an intraperitoneal cortisol deposit (25 mg kg(-1) wet mass) drastically alters metabolic performance along the gut in enzyme specific patterns, generally increasing enzyme activities in site-specific arrangements. The activity and distribution of
aspartate aminotransferase
(EC 2.6.1.1) and alanine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.2) in adult Fasciola hepatica have been studied. Fasciola hepatica was fractionated by differential centrifugation into nuclear, mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions. The activity of GOT and GPT was measured by the method of Reitman and Frankel. Isozyme patterns of those enzyme were also examined by DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The activity of aspartate and alanine aminotransferase was about 0.55 unit and 0.92 unit per 1 g of Fasciola hepatica, respectively. 2. This study examines the

activity in the pulp of orthodontically treated teeth. Seventeen healthy male and female subjects (ages: 14.5-19.6; mean 16.8 +/- 1.6 years) who needed extraction of the maxillary first premolars for orthodontic reasons were enrolled in the study. One randomly chosen maxillary first premolar, included in a straight-wire fixed orthodontic appliance and supporting orthodontic force, was considered as the test tooth. The contralateral first premolar, included in the orthodontic appliance but not subjected to mechanical stress, was used as the control tooth. After a week of treatment, the dental pulp tissues were extracted from both experimental teeth.

activity was significantly elevated in the test teeth as compared with the control teeth. These results demonstrate that in the early phases of treatment, orthodontic force application to the teeth can lead to significant metabolic changes in the pulp of these teeth.

The high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-Atherosclerosis Treatment Study showed that simvastatin plus niacin (mean daily dose 13 mg and 2.4 g, respectively) halt angiographic atherosclerosis progression and reduce major clinical events by 60% in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who have low HDL, in comparison with placebos, over 3 years. How safe and well-tolerated is this combination? One hundred sixty patients with CAD, including 25 with diabetes mellitus, with mean low-density lipoprotein cholesterol of 128 mg/dl, HDL cholesterol of < or =35 mg/dl (mean 31), and mean triglycerides of 217 mg/dl were randomized to 4 factorial combinations of antioxidant vitamins or their placebos and simvastatin plus niacin or their placebos. Patients were examined monthly or bimonthly for 38 months; side effects (gastrointestinal upset, nausea, anorexia, vision, skin, and energy problems, or muscle aches) were directly queried and recorded.

Glycemic control among diabetics declined mildly in the simvastatin-niacin group but returned to pretreatment levels at 8 months and remained stable for rest of the study. This combination regimen was repeatedly described by 91% of treated patients and 86% of placebo subjects as "very easy" or "fairly easy" to take. Thus, the simvastatin plus niacin regimen is effective, safe, and well tolerated in patients with or without diabetes mellitus.

The first objective of this human model study was to explore the effect of the liposuction procedure on electrolyte balance. The second objective was to determine whether elevated plasma aminotransferase levels were observed subsequent to large-volume liposuction. Five female volunteers underwent three-stage, ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Blood samples were collected perioperatively. Plasma levels of sodium, potassium, venous carbon dioxide, blood urea nitrogen, chloride, and creatinine were determined.
