We examined the effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on liver regeneration after a partial hepatectomy (PH) in Sprague-Dawley rats. PH was performed on rats fed a 0 or 1 wt.% CLA diet for 3 wk. Average liver weight in the CLA fed rat population was heavier than the control rat population at the time of PH and 1-d after PH. Conversely. CLA fed rats' liver weight was significantly lower than control rats at 7-d after PH. This suggests that dietary CLA reduced liver weight gain after PH. Dietary CLA did not affect serum
aspartate aminotransferase

) or alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities. However. CLA significantly reduced
serum albumin
levels at 1-d but not at 7-d after PH. 5-Bromo- and 5-iododeoxyuridine incorporation into hepatocytes 1-d post PH was lower in the CLA group. In conclusion, the data suggests that dietary CLA inhibits DNA synthesis after PH, which results in hepatocyte proliferation inhibition.

Although hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related cirrhosis has been suggested as a risk factor for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), few sizeable studies have tested this hypothesis. We investigated ICC risk factors, with special reference to HCV infection. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study including 50 ICC patients and 205 other surgical patients without primary liver cancer. HCV seropositivity was detected in 36% of ICC patients and 3% of controls. By univariate analysis, the odds ratio (OR) for association of anti-HCV antibodies with development was 16.87 (95% confidence interval (CI), 5.69 to 50.00). The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) on rat liver regeneration before and after partial hepatectomy. Rats were sacrificed 54 h after 15% hepatectomy, liver and body weights were measured, and serum alanine transaminase (ALT) and
aspartate transaminase
(
AST
) activity and albumin levels were determined. The lipid peroxide level, as indicated by malondialdehyde production in the remnant liver was measured, and liver sections were analyzed by light microscopy. Five groups of 10 rats in each group were studied. The preHBO and pre-hyperbaric pressure (preHB) groups were treated before partial hepatectomy with 100% O2 and 21% O2, respectively, at 202,650 pascals, daily for 3 days (45 min/day). The control group was not treated before partial hepatectomy and recovered under normal ambient conditions after the procedure. Groups postHBO and postHB were treated after partial hepatectomy with HBO and HB, respectively, three times (45 min/day). The preHBO group presented a significant increase in the initiation of the regeneration process of the liver 54 h postoperatively. The liver/body weight ratio was 0.0618 +/- 0.0084 in the preHBO compared to 0.0517 +/- 0016 g/g in the control animals (P = 0.016). In addition, the preHBO group showed significant better liver function (evaluated by the lowest serum ALT and

activities, P = 0.002 and P = 0.008, respectively) and showed a significant decrease in
serum albumin
levels compared to control (P < 0.001). Liver lipid peroxide concentration was lowest in the preHBO group (P < 0.001 vs control and postHBO group) and light microscopy revealed that the composition of liver lobules in the preHBO group was the closest to normal histological features. These results suggest that HBO pretreatment was beneficial for rat liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy.

The first objective of this human model study was to explore the effect of the liposuction procedure on electrolyte balance. The second objective was to determine whether elevated plasma aminotransferase levels were observed subsequent to large-volume liposuction. Five female volunteers underwent three-stage, ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Blood samples were collected perioperatively. Plasma levels of sodium, potassium, venous carbon dioxide, blood urea nitrogen, chloride, and creatinine were determined. , and alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and total bilirubin. To further define intracellular enzyme release, creatine kinase levels were measured. Mild hyponatremia was evident postoperatively (134 to 136 mmol/liter) in four patients. Hypokalemia was evident intraoperatively in all subjects (mean +/- SEM; 3.3 +/- 0.16 mmol/liter; range, 3.0 to 3.4 mmol/liter). This study was carried out to establish the effects of therapeutic and toxic doses of levamisole on thyroid hormone levels and some biochemical parameters in sheep. Twelve Akkaraman ewes were used. Levamisole was given orally at doses of 7.5 mg kg(-1) (group 1) and 40 mg kg(-1) (group 2) to the animals. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein at 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 96 and 144 h after the administrations. Serum thyroid hormones and some biochemical parameters were determined on these samples. When compared with the control levels, no significant changes were observed in triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4) levels in group 1. Although levamisole was found to increase the levels of total T3, it decreased the levels of total T4 in group 2. On the other hand, free T3 and free T4 levels were not changed in either group. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected South African patients (n=468) received blinded lamivudine or emtricitabine, stavudine, and either nevirapine or efavirenz (based on screening viral load). Baseline characteristics were analyzed in univariate and multivariate regression, to identify risk factors for hepatotoxicity (grade 3 or greater increase in serum aminotransferase levels). The occurrence of early hepatotoxicity was 17% in the nevirapine group and 0% in the efavirenz group and was balanced between the lamivudine and emtricitabine arms. To determine the health effects of gasoline exposure on liver function test indices of filling station workers the present study was done. This case-control study was conducted in Shiraz on 56 male gasoline workers and 56 age- and sex-matched control subjects with no occupational exposure to gasoline. To elucidate the role of hepatic detoxifying enzymes, the genotypes of glutathione-S-transferases (GST) M1 and T1 were determined. Data analysis was done by multiple linear regression analysis and non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test. Twenty-four growing male buffalo calves (one year of age; 88.54 +/- 3.81 kg average body weight) were divided into three comparable groups (I, II and III) on the basis of their body weight (BW) in a completely randomised design to study the effect of long term feeding of ammoniated wheat straw (AWS) and hydrochloric acid treated ammoniated wheat straw (HCl-AWS) on blood biochemical changes. The animals were offered a concentrate mixture (CM) along with wheat straw (WS), ammoniated wheat straw (AWS) (4% urea at a 50% moisture level) and hydrochloric acid treated ammoniated wheat straw (HCI-AWS) (4% urea at a 50% moisture level and HCI added to trap 30% of NH3 evolved) in groups I, II and III, respectively for an average daily gain (ADG) of 500 g. All the diets were made iso-nitrogenous by preparing three types of concentrate mixtures of different CP levels. The blood was collected from the jugular vein randomly from three animals of each group initially after 8 months post feeding and subsequently after two months interval up to 14 months of experimental feeding. Due to urea ammoniation, the CP content of WS increased from 3.66 to 8.51 and was further increased to 11.35 due to the addition of HCl during urea-ammoniation of wheat straw. The cumulative period mean plasma glucose values (mg %), in group II (53.13) were significantly (P < 0.001) higher than those in groups I (48.44) and III (50.60). The cumulative period mean values of

Two dose response trials were conducted with piglets and chickens to study the effects of increasing amounts of ergot (Claviceps purpurea) with a defined alkaloid content and pattern on performance, biochemical serum characteristics and organ weights (of chickens). The ergot was mixed into the cereal-soybean meal based diets at levels of 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 g/kg. The total alkaloid content of the ergot was analysed to be 2775 mg/kg and showed the following composition: ergometrine 8.1%, ergotamine 5.4%, ergocomine 3.2%, alpha-ergocryptine 1.9%, ergocristine 14.9% and residue 66.5%. Each treatment was tested with eight castrated male and eight female piglets over a period of 35 days (8 kg initial live weight) and 28 male chickens for 21 days (43 g initial live weight). Cumulative daily dry matter intake and live weight gain [g/d] were 595, 535, 560, 577 and 490 and 413, 399, 420, 443 and 347 for the piglets fed the unsupplemented control diet and the diets containing 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 g ergot per kg, respectively. Feed intake and live weight gain of the piglets fed the highest ergot supplemented diet were significantly decreased. Serum

activity of the 4 g ergot treatment was significantly increased. Also

concentrations showed significant linear alterations. Serum activities of glutamate dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, total protein and porcine growth hormone were not significantly influenced by dietary treatment. and the concentrations of albumin and total bilirubin were significantly affected. Heart weights showed a significant linear decrease due to ergot feeding. According to these results, piglets seemed to react more sensitively on the occurrence of ergot in the diet as compared to chickens. The critical level of total ergot alkaloids for piglets seemed to be in the range from 5.6 mg to 11.1 mg/kg diet for the present study. Ergot effects on signs of inflammation in the proximal duodenum occurred in chickens fed diets containing 2.8 mg and 11.1 mg total ergot alkaloids/kg although live performance remained unaffected. Further studies are necessary to define the critical level of ergot alkaloids in dependence on alkaloid pattern.
