Serrated adenomas of the colon are characterized by epithelial neoplasia combining the architectural features of hyperplastic polyps and the cytological features of adenomas. Cell turnover, which is related to the malignant potential of these polyps, has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate epithelial cell proliferation, apoptosis, and oncoprotein expression in serrated adenomas. Twenty-five hyperplastic polyps, 25 serrated adenomas, and 25 tubulovillous adenomas resected from the colons of 75 patients were studied by immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies against

Bcl-2
, Bax, p53, and the TUNEL method for the detection of apoptosis. In serrated adenomas, the proliferation rate was significantly lower than in tubulovillous adenomas in both the lower and the upper parts of the crypts, and higher than that of hyperplastic polyps. Apoptosis was also significantly lower in serrated than in tubulovillous adenomas, but higher than in hyperplastic polyps. p53 oncoprotein expression was significantly greater in both serrated and tubulovillous adenomas than in hyperplastic polyps. bcl-2 protein expression was higher only in tubulovillous adenomas. Bax index was significantly different between tubullovillous and serrated adenomas, but the lowest values were observed in hyperplastic polyps. Serrated adenomas are highly proliferative polyps. They should be considered a biologically different entity from hyperplastic polyps. The intermediate features between serrated adenomas, hyperplastic polyps, and tubulovillous adenomas using the antibodies analysed in this study could have implications for the rate or the mechanism of development of malignancy in this type of polyp.

We report an instructive case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma presenting as acute heart failure. A 69-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-negative man was admitted to our hospital for general fatigue. A computed tomographic scan of the chest and abdomen showed pericardial effusion, but there was no evidence of tumor masses, lymph node enlargement, or hepatosplenomegaly. During the chemotherapy, increased lactate dehydrogenase and pleural effusion appeared. The tumor cells in the effusion showed positivity for CD5, CD19, CD20, kappa chain, and

and negativity for CD10 and CD23. The chromosomes showed t(8;14)(q24;q32) with c-myc/immunoglobulin (Ig)H rearrangement, and the

The response to chemotherapy was very poor, and the patient died 4 months after the diagnosis. A spectrum of the symptoms of CD5+ lymphoma encompasses pericardial effusion and also can accompany c-myc/IgH rearrangement.

To validate the use of the tissue microarray (TMA) method for immunophenotyping of ferret lymphomas, a TMA was constructed containing duplicate 1-mm cores sampled from 112 paraffin-embedded lymphoma tissue specimens obtained from 43 ferret lymphoma cases. Immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of CD3, CD79alpha, and Ki-67 (

-1) was determined by TMA and whole mount (WM) staining of each individual case for result comparison. There was a high correlation between CD79alpha and CD3 results comparing ferret TMA and WM sections (kappa statistic 0.71-0.73 for single-core TMA and 0.79-0.95 for duplicate-core TMA) and between continuous data from Ki-67 staining of ferret TMA sections and WM sections (concordance correlation coefficients 0.77 for single cores and 0.87 for duplicate cores). Subsequently, a panel of commercially available antibodies was applied to the TMA for the analysis of expression in ferret lymphomas. The results of this study confirmed previously published results suggesting specific cross-reactivity of the applied IHC markers (CD3, CD79alpha, Ki67) with ferret lymphoma tissue. -1, and PCNA to validate more objective methods to differentiate squamous cell carcinoma and keratoacanthoma, as well as to understand their pathogenesis with accuracy. A total of 52 cases of histopathologically diagnosed keratoacanthoma in the proliferative stage and 56 cases of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma were selected in this study. The expression was evaluated by means of immunohistochemistry.

Primary central nervous system (PCNS) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma whose growth is restricted to the central nervous system and eye. Primary CNS DLBCL has a poor prognosis relative to other extranodal DLBCL. Recently DLBCL has been subclassified as germinal and non-germinal center B-cell types using microarray. Germinal center B-cell DLBCL is associated with better prognosis compared to non-germinal center B-cell group. The objective of the study was to subcategorize the PCNS DLBCL into germinal center and non-germinal center DLBCL using immunohistochemistry and to correlate its prognostic significance. 21 immunocompetent patients were diagnosed with PCNS DLBCL over last 20 years at William Beaumont Hospital. Docetaxel, a second-generation taxane, is one of the most powerful anticancer drugs for breast cancer. It has been widely used in the metastatic setting but also in the adjuvant or neoadjuvant setting for breast cancer patients. However, docetaxel is not effective for all breast cancers. The response rate is 40-60% even in first-line chemotherapy and it decreases to 20-30% in the second-or third-line chemotherapy. Therefore, it is very important to predict the sensitivity of docetaxel with high accuracy in order to avoid unnecessary treatment. Docetaxel binds to beta-tubulin and promotes polymerization, resulting in interference with mitosis. Unfortunately, the mechanism of sensitivity or resistance to docetaxel has not been fully understood. Ameloblastic carcinoma is a very rare malignant odontogenic neoplasm of the mandible and maxilla, accounting for some 66 reported cases. The case of a 68-year-old man who presented a fistula with orosinus communication of 14-year duration that, after anti-aggregant therapy, began bleeding is reported. The initial microscopic evaluation of the biopsy and radiographic findings were consistent with benign peripheral ameloblastoma without cellular atypia and extensive fields of acantomatous pattern, but immunohistochemical investigation found strong positivity for

Preneoplastic lesions for renal oncocytosis have not been well defined. We have attempted to identify the putative in-situ or dysplastic change in nephrectomy specimens with oncocytosis. Cases of multiple oncocytoma previously identified in radical nephrectomy specimens (n = 5) were reviewed for early lesions of renal oncocytosis by light microscopic analysis and by immunohistochemical studies for p53,

and
MIB
-1. Microscopic analysis showed that the renal cortical regions in all cases contain isolated groups of tubules partially or completely replaced by oncocytic cells with morphologic features resembling tumor cells in oncocytosis. The oncocytic cells within these tubules are increased in number and are arranged either as solid groups or as single layers in cystically dilated tubules, and may assume a hobnail appearance. They can be distinguished from small foci of oncocytosis as they do not form a coalescent group but are separated in part by intervening normal-appearing tubules. Cytologically, the cells have abundant eosinophilic, granular cytoplasm with a low nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio and demonstrate distinct cell borders. A very characteristic feature of these cells is the retraction space ("windows") between the oncocytic cells. Nuclear features of these cells are not distinctive from normal tubules. Thus, recognition of a putative dysplastic lesion for oncocytosis is possible by routine microscopic analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological features and the expression of proteins involved in cell proliferation and the different pathways of apoptosis in retinoblastoma. Nineteen retinoblastoma patients were included, and mitotic index (MI) and apoptotic index (AI) were assessed. The expression of

Confirmation of the results in a large set of tumors would be useful.
