Abnormal uterine bleeding is the major reason for discontinuing long-term progesterone-only contraceptives (LTPOCs). Prior studies demonstrated that endometria exposed to the LTPOC, Norplant, display aberrant angiogenesis, leukocyte infiltration, and hypoxia-associated impaired blood flow.
