It is a huge honor to receive the WICB Junior
Award
for Excellence in Research. In this essay, I first describe what we have discovered in my lab so far. Then, I summarize the strategies that helped transition my lab from its infant shoes to a mature research environment where discoveries are being made.

I am grateful to have received the 2019 Women in Cell Biology Mid-Career
Award
from the American Society for Cell Biology. My lab has been studying aging and longevity regulation since 2005, but along the way we have had some surprises. These unexpected findings have morphed from detours to main directions, changing how I view biology. As I look back I've come to appreciate the importance and joy that can come from being open to these surprise interests and rigorously pursuing them.

I am honored to receive the 2019 ASCB Public Service

. It has been a true privilege to work with the cell biology community; I thank them for their collegiality in their interactions with me over the years. In this essay I offer some perspectives on constructing goals and strategy for research grant and fellowship applications in basic cell biology. They are based on my observations as a program officer for grants and applications in cell biology in the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) from 1991 to 2019.

It is a tremendous honor to receive the 2019 E.B. Wilson
Award
and be recognized for my work on chemotaxis in eukaryotic cells. In writing this essay, I hope to achieve three aims: 1) to tell the story of how people in my group made discoveries over the years; 2) to outline key principles we have learned about chemotaxis; and 3) to point to the most important outstanding questions.

Winning the American Society for Cell Biology's Women in Cell Biology Mid-career
Award
is incredibly meaningful to me, as it validates that someone focusing on engineering and applications can be a "real" cell biologist, too. Single-minded devotion to studying a particular biological process is not a prerequisite for a career in science and academia. The more diverse the scientific styles and demographics of scientists who feel welcome, the stronger science will be.

I always found it curious that in science, we value unique, creative thinkers, but we teach scientists to progress in a formulaic manner that rarely takes each person's individual strengths into account. Surprisingly, when we break the mold, we are often rewarded for it. This cycle of learning to survive using conventional wisdom but being rewarded for a unique path outside of it seems to be an unspoken key to success. I am honored to be awarded the 2020 Women in Cell Biology Junior
Award
for Excellence in Research and am thrilled to share some of the unconventional guiding principles that brought me to where I am in this rich scientific landscape. The game changers in the early phase of my career were informal mentors, open scientific communication, and persistence in pursuing difficult scientific questions.
