Fertilization and oocyte cleavage rates have previously been demonstrated to be lower for women with endometriosis undergoing IVF compared with controls. This might be related to impaired oocyte function, possibly due to an inflammatory milieu in the pelvis of these women, where an elevated concentration of many cytokines is documented. The aim of this study was to examine whether granulosa cells from women with endometriosis deviated with respect to production of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1beta,
interleukin-6
, interleukin-8 and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) compared with granulosa cells from healthy women, undergoing IVF for male infertility. The effect of human chorionic gonadotrophin on cytokine production was also investigated. Granulosa cells in follicular fluid were obtained at oocyte retrieval for IVF. Incubated cell culture media were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The basal production of all four cytokines was higher in cells from women with endometriosis when compared to controls, although the increase was only significant for TNFalpha.
Chorionic gonadotrophin
had no significant effect, although it had a tendency to suppress cytokine release in both patient categories. Whether aberrant cytokine production in granulosa cells from women with endometriosis may disturb fertilizing capacity of oocytes requires study.

Despite progress in assisted reproduction technologies, the lack of control of implantation remains a major obstacle to obtain successful pregnancies. It is of prime importance to determine the characteristic features of a receptive endometrium. Embryo implantation is a complex event involving apposition followed by the adhesion of the blastocyst to the maternal endometrium, and finally the invasion of this endometrium. Though implantation could occur in any human tissue, the endometrium is the only tissue where embryo implantation cannot occur except during a restricted period called the "implantation window". During this window, the endometrium is highly receptive to the embryo. Maternal-embryo crosstalk is favored by the implantation window. The molecular basis of the implantation window remains to be defined In the present study, we investigated the role of hCG, TGFbeta1, IGF1 and IGF2 in the secretion of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and
interleukin-6
(
IL-6
) by human epithelial endometrial cells in culture. Epithelial endometrial cells were obtained from endometrial biopsy in 28 fertile women.
HCG
and TGFbeta1 added to primary cultures of human epithelial endometrial cells showed a stimulatory effect on LIF secretion and a reducing effect on
IL-6
secretion. All these findings suggest a role for hCG and TGFbeta1 in human embryo implantation.

This study aimed to elucidate the effect of electroacupuncture treatment on preventing early ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and the potential mechanisms involved using an induced rat model. The ovarian response was examined by measuring ovary weight, vascular permeability, levels of inflammation (
interleukin-6
), tumour necrosis factor alpha, chemokine ligand 2 (also known as monocyte chemoactic protein 1), vascular endothelial growth factor and hormone concentrations (oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone and prolactin). Sprague-Dawley female rats underwent ovarian stimulation to induce OHSS. Hyperstimulated rats received consecutive electroacupuncture treatment from 3 days before the beginning of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin treatment or the time point of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin treatment respectively, and last until 3 days after
HCG
administration. Electroacupuncture treatment reduced ovary weight and vascular permeability in hyperstimulated rats. Electroacupuncture treatment also reduced the levels of serum steroid hormones (progesterone and testosterone), inflammatory cytokines (
interleukin-6
, tumour necrosis factor alpha and monocyte chemotactic protein 1 and vascular endothelial growth factor in hyperstimulated rats. The results indicate that electroacupuncture can modulate endocrine hormone secretion and affect the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and vascular endothelial growth factor, and thus prevent the progress of OHSS. Electroacupuncture may provide a simple and effective method for the prevention and treatment of OHSS.

Background/aim: The purpose of this study is to compare the diagnostic value of hepcidin level with the white blood cell (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and
interleukin-6
(
IL-6
) levels in pediatric sepsis and septic shock. Materials and methods: A cohort of 89 individuals were divided into four groups: a healthy control group (
HCG
, n = 28), pediatric intensive care unit control group (PICUCG, n = 17), sepsis group (SG, n = 23), and septic shock group (SSG, n = 21). WBC, CRP, PCT,
IL-6
, and hepcidin levels were studied in the PICUCG, SG, and SSG, while hepcidin and
IL-6
levels were studied in the
HCG
. Results: In distinguishing the SG and SSG from the
HCG
, hepcidin sensitivity and specificity were found to be 100%. Distinguishing between the PICUCG and the SG, hepcidin sensitivity was calculated as 95.6% and specificity was calculated as 100%. The sensitivity of WBC, CRP, and PCT was lower than that of hepcidin, but the sensitivity of
IL-6
was higher than that of hepcidin. While the specificity of PCT and
IL-6
was the same as hepcidin, the specificity of WBC and CRP was lower than that of hepcidin. Conclusion: Hepcidin is a more reliable indicator than WBC and CRP levels in distinguishing children with sepsis and septic shock from healthy children and nonseptic pediatric ICU patients.
