The incidence of several extracolonic tumors, such as duodenal carcinoma, is higher in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients than in the general population, but there is little information about lung carcinoma in FAP. A 43-year-old woman presented with a lung tumor 17 years after total colectomy for FAP. Pathohistological analysis of the lung tumor demonstrated mixed adenocarcinoma consisting of a papillary adenocarcinoma component and a
bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
component. Sequencing analysis indicated a germline APC mutation from TCA to TGA (stop) at codon 1110, but no pathogenic germline MYH mutations. The other APC allele in the lung carcinoma was not inactivated by somatic mutations, promoter methylation, or chromosomal deletion. No somatic mutations in any of the coding regions of the
p53
gene or in the mutation hot spot regions of the K-ras or EGFR genes were detected in the carcinoma. Amplification, however, of three chromosome regions, 5p, 8q, and 12q14-12q21, was identified in the carcinoma on genome-wide high-resolution single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray. The present results suggest that the chromosomal copy number alterations detected on SNP microarray were involved in the carcinogenesis of the adenocarcinoma of the lung in the present FAP patient.

-homologous nuclear protein), basal cell-specific cytokeratin antibody (34betaE12, K903), and smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SMMHC) in benign and malignant bronchioloalveolar proliferations of the lung. We studied 85 lung lesions consisting of 35
bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
, 30 well-differentiated adenocarcinoma, and 20 cases of benign lung lesions. In normal lung, p63, K903, and SMMHC decorated the basal cells of large and small airways and occasional cells of terminal bronchioles. In reactive processes, a distinctive staining pattern was present in 19/20 (95%) of the cases characterized by staining of basal cells of the airways and bronchiolar epithelium and squamous metaplastic epithelium for p63 and K903, whereas 12/20 (60%) stained with SMMHC. bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
, a discontinuous peripheral rim of p63-immunoreactive cells was retained surrounding and intermingled with the malignant bronchioloalveolar proliferation in 31/35 (88.5%) cases, SMMHC in 28/35 (80%) cases, and K903 in 20/35 (57%) cases. For adenocarcinoma, a majority of the cases (28/30, 93%) were negative for p63 and K903; however, SMMHC showed artifactual staining in the desmoplastic stroma in 6/30 (20%) cases. The present study was performed to determine the morphologic change and selected molecular features of spontaneous lung tumors in cats examined at the North Carolina State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Thirty-nine primary lung carcinomas represented 0.69% of all feline cases admitted to the hospital. Most lung tumors were observed in aged cats (P < .0001), and no sex predilection was found (P < .4241). Persian cats with pulmonary carcinoma were overrepresented in the data set, at least 4 times more frequently than other breeds. The histologic tumor types included adenocarcinoma (64.1%),
bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
(20.5%), and adenosquamous carcinoma (15.4%). Metastasis was observed in about 80% of 39 cases, with decreasing order of intrapulmonary metastasis, intrathoracic carcinomatosis, regional lymph nodes, and distant organs, including digits. The size of the largest tumor mass was significantly associated with metastatic potential (P < .001).
