The histological change of the biliary mucosa in clonorchiasis is characterized as adenomatous hyperplasia, and cross-sectioned mucosa looks like intestinal mucosa. In addition to the glandular hyperplasia, the metaplasia of mucin secreting cells is also known. The present study investigated the presence of intestinal secretion from the biliary mucosal cells of rabbits and rats with Clonorchis sinensis infection. The rabbit was infected with 300 and the rat was infected with 100 metacercariae of C. sinensis. A part of the animals were followed up after praziquantel treatment. The rabbit livers were prepared for histochemistry to observe any endocrine secretion and the bile duct mucosa of the mice was processed for the activity of brush border membrane (BBM)-bound enzymes of the small intestine. peroxidase
staining kit showed no positive cells for
gastrin
and secretin, but a few cells were positive for serotonin. The proliferated biliary mucosa of the mice revealed no activity of disaccharidases and aminopeptidase. Only alkaline phosphatase activity was found both in the control and the infected. The hyperplastic biliary mucosal cells showed no gastrointestinal secretory functions. The serotonin secreting cells may be one of the inflammatory cells.

The aim of this study was to investigate the consequence of Helicobacter pylori eradication on gastric mucosa and antral G and D-cells. Forty children, aged 5-17 years with Helicobacter pylori infection were assessed. Helicobacter pylori was detected by a urease test and identified by serological and microbiological methods. Twenty children were again assessed after the therapy (the combination of colloid bismuth subcitrate, amoxycillin and metronidazole). Gastroscopic examination was performed and at least six bioptic specimens were taken from the antrum, body and fundus. -antiperoxidase technique (PAP) have been used to detect G and D-cells. Helicobacter pylori in the gastric mucosa was demonstrated with the Giemsa method. The results show the coincidence of Helicobacter pylori infection and the count of antral G and D-cells and active chronic gastritis in children. After the treatment Helicobacter pylori was eradicated in 70% of children. In 34% of these cases the eradication was followed by a diminution of activity of gastric antral mucosa inflammation and in 20% of these children the resolution of the inflammatory infiltration in the gastric mucosa was seen. A decrease of the antral G and D-cells count and also a diminution of G/D index in these cases were observed.

-producing G cells, somatostatin-producing D cells and serotonin-producing EC cells was carried out on fundic, antral and duodenal biopsies, and was quantified using a Zeiss MOP Videoplan using the
peroxidase
-antiperoxidase technique of Sternberger. In the gastric antrum, a G:D:EC cell ratio of approximately 1.6:1:1-was observed. In the duodenum the corresponding ratio was 1:1:2.4. No significant differences were observed within any of the major diagnostic categories. Patient age, sex, duration of symptoms, smoking habits, alcohol consumption and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use had no effect on endocrine cell densities. Reduced G cell density in the descending duodenum was observed in the presence of mild duodenitis in four patients. In four patients with evidence of antral intestinal metaplastic changes, a significant increase in duodenal G cell densities was found. These results suggest that a change in the number of G, D or EC cells does not play a primary role in the pathophysiology of acid peptic disorders in the majority of patients.

cells in the pyloric antrum of the stomach, we examined antral cells of the mouse, rat, and guinea pig by electron microscopy following stimulation with the cholinergic secretagogue carbamylcholine. Increased numbers of omega profiles indicative of exocytosis were seen in the basal or lateral cell membrane after stimulation with carbamylcholine. The number of exocytotic figures in stimulated
gastrin
cells was higher in the guinea pig than in the mouse and rat. Coated and non-coated omega profiles and coated pits in the plasma membrane were smaller than the secretory granules. Cells that were immunoreactive for chromogranin, serotonin, somatostatin and glucagon were found in all portions of the gastrointestinal tract. , GIP and GLU-IR endocrine cells were found in the intestinal mucosa of silver carp, bighead, silver crucian carp and bluntnose black bream. Most of IR endocrine cells had the higher distribution density in the foregut and midgut, and were longer in shape. They had a long apical cytoplasmic process extended to the gut lumen and a basal process extended to adjacent cells or basement membrane and touched with it. Sometimes, the basal cytoplasmic process formed an enlarged synapse-like structure in the contiguous part with basement membrane. This phenomenon provided new morpho-logical evidence for neuroendocrine and paracrine secretory function of these enteroendocrine cells.CONCLUTION:At least 8 kinds of IR endocrine cells were found in the gut of stomachless teleost species for the first time in China. These IR endocrine cells scattering in the gut mucosa belong to the APUD system. Among them, the hormones secreted by SP-, ENK-, SOM- and GLU-IR endocrine cells belong to the peptides of dual distribution in the brain and gut. This provided new evidence for the concept of brain-gut peptide. According to the cell types, distribution density, morphological characteristics and variety in shape of APUD cells in the gut of stomachless teleost fishes, it is deemed that the digestive tract of fishes is also an endocrine organ of great importance and complexity.

The positive reaction of growth hormone (GH)IRE cells was found only in pancreatic island of S. Chuatsi and S. Asotus, no positive reaction in the other 6 fish species. Somatostatin (SOM), calcitonin (CAL), neurofilament (NF) and insulin (INS)-IRE cells in the stomach, intestine and pancreas of 8 kinds of fish were different in distribution and types. The distribution of all 8 APUD cells was the most in gastrointestinal epithelium mucosa and then in digestive glands. The positive reaction of SOM and 5-HT-IRE cells was found in intermuscular nerve plexus of intestine of P.fulvidraco and S.chuatsi. Only GH-IRE cells were densely scattered in the pancreatic islands of S.chuatsi and S. asotus, and odd distribution in the pancreas of S. asotus.SOM-IRE cells were distributed in the pancreatic islands of S. asotus, C. Brachypomumand T. nilotica. There were INS-IRE cells in the pancreatic islands of S. chuatsi and S. asolus. Eight kinds of APUD cells had longer cell body and cytoplasmic process when they were located in the gastrointestinal epithelium, and had shorter cell body and cytoplasmic process in the gastric gland, and irregular shape in the esophagus and pancreatic island.CONCLUSION:Eight kinds of IRE cells were identified in the GEP system of stomach-containing teleosts. These endocrine cells were scattered in gastrointestinal mucosa, intermuscular nerve plexus, gland body, pancreatic gland and islands under APUD system. CAL and GH-IRE cells in the pancreatic islands of fishes showed functional diversity for these two hormones. Their morphological feature provides evidence of endocrine-paracrine and endocrine-exocrine acting mode. This research can morphologically prove that the GEP endocrine system of fish (the lowest vertebrate) is almost the same as of mammal and human.

Cisplatin (CDDP) is an antitumor platinum complex that causes the well-studied side effect of renal tubular failure. In the present study, the acute effects of CDDP treatment on the localization of gut hormones in the rat small intestine were examined by immunohistochemistry. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used for these experiments. Rats were injected intravenously with CDDP (3 mg/kg) in saline or were left untreated (control). After the rats were euthanized at 1, 3, 5, or 10 days after CDDP treatment, the small intestines (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) were quickly removed, fixed, embedded in paraffin, and cut. No mucosal toxicity was detected by histopathological observation in any of the intestines of CDDP-treated rats. The immunohistochemical detection was performed using anti-secretin, anti-cholecystokinin (CCK), and anti-somatostatin with the avidin-biotin-immuno-
peroxidase
procedure. The total number of immunoreactive cells per complete cross-section was counted. In the duodenum, the numbers of secretin-immunoreactive cells and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were dramatically increased 5 days after CDDP treatment. In the jejunum, the number of CCK-immunoreactive cells was increased 1 day after CDDP treatment and those of secretin-immunoreactive cells and CCK-immunoreactive cells were increased 5 days after CDDP treatment. In the ileum, the number of CCK-immunoreactive cells was increased 1 day after CDDP treatment. The change in the secretin-immunoreactive cell count may be caused by metabolic inhibition of
gastrin
following CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity. The change in the CCK-immunoreactive cell count may promote the excretion of bile. Therefore, somatostatin may regulate secretin and CCK secretion. We conclude that the distribution of these hormone-immunoreactive cells in the rat small intestine might be controlled by CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity without gut mucosal toxicity.

The distribution and relative frequency of six kinds of endocrine cells in the stomach of the Malayan pangolin, Manis javanica were studied immunohistochemically using the avidin-biotin-

complex method. The stomach of the pangolin has three regions of mucous gland, one oxyntic gland and one pyloric gland. Cells immunoreactive for chromogranin, serotonin, somatostatin, BPP and glucagon were detected in all of the gastric glands, while
gastrin
-immunoreactive cells were found in the entire gastric gland except for the oxyntic gland. The distribution pattern of endocrine cells in the mucous gland and pyloric gland was mainly from the middle to apical portions of the glands. The endocrine cells were rare or not detected in the basal portion of all of the mucous glands and pyloric gland, but they were also found in the basal portion of the oxyntic gland. The distribution pattern of the endocrine cells in the mucous and pyloric glands suggested that this position facilitates a quick response to the luminal ingesta. The wide distribution of
