The effect of
alpha-MSH
on sebum secretion and preputial gland weight was examined in intact, castrated and hypophysectomized male rats and in hypophysectomized rats receiving treatment with either testosterone propionate (TP) or progesterone. After treatment with
alpha-MSH
for 2 weeks, increases in sebum secretion occurred in intact, castrated and hypophysectomized rats, but larger responses were found in the hypophysectomized rats that had received treatment with either TP or progesterone, suggesting that
alpha-MSH
acts synergistically with TP and progesterone to stimulate sebum secretion. Alpha-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone also increased preputial gland weight in intact rats, but there was no response after castration and only a small response after hypophysectomy. However, when the hypophysectomized rats received simultaneous treatment with either TP or progesterone,
alpha-MSH
increased preputial gland weight. It is suggested that
alpha-MSH
acts directly on the sebaceous glands to stimulate lipogenesis and, together with steroid hormones, may have an important role in controlling sebaceous glandd function in the rat and other
hairy
mammals. With the evolution of hair, certain of the MSH peptides may have lost their significance as pigmentary hormones and have developed a sebotrophic function. For this reason, it might be more appropriate to refer to these peptides as the 'sebotrophins'.

Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAcP) is a reliable cytochemical marker for the diagnosis of hairy cell leukemia (HCL). The enzyme has been the subject of much biochemical investigation yet its function in the
hairy
cells (HC) is still unknown. Two TRAcPs have been purified from HCL spleen tissues by a series of chromatographic separations. The two enzymes, provisionally called peak 1 and peak 2, had specific activities of greater than 600 U/mg and 800 U/mg respectively when p-nitrophenyl phosphate (p-NPP) was used as substrate and had Km values in the range of 1 to 5 mM p-
NPP
. The two TRAcPs had the same substrate specificities and inhibitor sensitivities, therefore could be isoforms of the same enzyme. Their pH optima were between 5 and 6 for all substrates tested including the phosphotyrosine-containing peptide, Raytide, which was still hydrolyzed efficiently at neutral pH. Neither phosphoserine nor phosphoserine-containing casein were hydrolyzed by either enzyme. The TRAcPs of HC may thus be capable of functioning as protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTP). High activity of a PTP could regulate the activities of protein-tyrosine kinases and thereby influence the growth and differentiation of the
hairy
cells.

The quantitative composition of the peripheral blood, enzymatic activity of neutrophils and hypoxic ventilatory drive were determined in people working at the Chernobyl
NPP
during sojourn for 28 days in the Caucasus mountains at 220 m altitude with a periodical climbing up to 4200 m. At the initial state we found neutropenia, lymphocytosis, an increase in the number of prolymphocytes and big
hairy
lymphocytes, a decrease in the number of small lymphocytes, fall in activity of enzymes responsible for oxygen-dependent and oxygen-independent mechanisms of bactericidity. The indices of sensitivity to the hypoxic respiration stimulus did not essentially differ from the norm. Staying at altitude promoted normalization of the number of segmento-nuclear neutrophils, lymphocytes (their small population, in particular), an increase in the number of eosinophiles of the peripheral blood. Changes in the activity of myeloperoxidase, NADP-oxidase and cationic proteins in the neutrophils were observed. A considerable increase of the ventilatory drive to the hypoxic respiration stimulus was determined. Accentuation of fermentative transformations proved to be closely related to the ventilatory response to hypoxia: weak activation of NADP-oxidase and a decrease of myeloperoxidase activity were observed in people with initially low respiration reactivity, while a considerable increase in activity of these enzymes and in content of cationic proteins was observed in people with high respiration reactivity. Individual peculiarities of the reaction to staying at altitude should be taken into account when developing particular methods of immune correction.
