Formaldehyde-induced fluorescence, acid-catalyzed or not, methods, and immunocytology with anti-ACTH (1-24), anti-ACTH(17-39), ANTI-BETA-LPH immunserums were applied on the same preparations of cat, fox, rat and human foetus pituitaries. Pimozide, a specific blocker of dopaminergic receptors, was injected for 4 or 9 days in freshwater (FW) eels or eels acclimated to sea water (SW) for 10 or 30 days. The daily dose was 100 or 200 microgram/100 g. Melanophore index values increase in FW and in 1 month-SW injected eels. All the treated fish react by a total or subtotal degranulation of the lead-hematoxylin positive cells in the pars intermedia. These cells were previously identified as
alpha-MSH
-secreting cells. The MSH cell nuclear area is significantly increased, nucleoli are larger and the endoplasmic reticulum more developed. The intensity of the response is similar in FW and SW eels, but it does not increase with the higher dose. The rapid release of pituitary
alpha-MSH
is also visualized by immunofluorescence and immunoenzymologic techniques. No effect on the second cell type of the pars intermedia (
PAS
-positive cell) is detected. The amount of neurosecretory material is often reduced in the neurohypophysis. These results suggest that the hypothalamic inhibitory control of MSH release and synthesis is mediated through dopaminergic fibers in the eel, but other factors cannot be ignored in this regulation.

The cell types in the adenohypophysis of Neoceratodus resemble closely those already described for Lepidosiren and Protopterus. Four of these were immunocytochemically identified as prolactin cells, gonadotropes, corticotropes, and melanotropes. Antiserum to bullfrog growth hormone could not distinguish between prolactin cells and somatotropes. Anti-bullfrog prolactin, however, did selectively stain the prolactin cells, which allowed the identification of the somatotropes. The presumptive thyrotropes, as the only remaining cell type in the pars distalis, can then be tentatively identified by default. Likewise a
PAS
-positive cell type in the pars intermedia had no immunoreactivity to any of the antisera used. The functional significance of this cell remains to be demonstrated. One of the more unexpected findings was the presence of large numbers of cells immunoreactive to
alpha-MSH
in the proximal pars distalis. The implications of the presence of these cells in adult lungfish are discussed. The distribution of cell types within the pituitary of Neoceratodus showed more regionalization than is present in the other lungfish and corresponded more closely to that described for primitive actinopterygian fish. The general structure of the pituitary of Neoceratodus also resembled primitive actinopterygian fish more closely than it did amphibians, unlike the pituitaries of Lepidosiren and Protopterus. The evolutionary significance of this is also discussed.

We report on a patient with ACTH and FSH producing invasive pituitary adenoma complaining of cutaneous pigmentation. Elevations in plasma ACTH,
beta-endorphin
and cortisol levels as well as urinary 17-OHCS and cortisol excretion were found. Serum FSH concentration was just within the upper limit of the normal range, whereas serum LH level was reduced and alpha-subunit level was normal. Roentogenographic examination showed an almost complete loss of sellar floor and destruction of the posterior clinoids and dorsum sella. CT scan and MRI demonstrated an enlarged tumor invasion of the clivus and its extension to the sphenoid sinus. After subtotal removal of the large pituitary tumor, serum cortisol and plasma
beta-endorphin
levels as well as plasma ACTH concentrations returned to normal and serum FSH levels also remarkably decreased. Histologically, the tumor corresponded to a chromophobe, slightly

and FSH, while immunostaining of the adenoma cells was negative for LH, TSH, GH and prolactin. The immunogold technique also demonstrated ACTH and FSH particles in the secretory granules in the cytoplasm of the adenoma cells. Some of the tumor cells disclosed Crooke's hyalinization and type I microfilament occupied most of the cytoplasm. In the present study, a very rare case of ACTH and FSH producing invasive pituitary adenoma is reported.

adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
revealed strong reactivity in the follicular areas of the carcinoid. The immunoreactivity for somatotropic release inhibiting factor (SRIF) was found positive in the trabecular portion of the carcinoid tumour, thyroglobulin in the follicles. Neuron-specific enolase, protein S-100 A/B, synaptophysin and chromogranin A evoked weak cytoplasmic immunostaining of the tumor cells. Dot-immunobinding assays substantiated these immunohistochemical results, except for the thermolabile protein S-100 A/B. Electron microscopy of tumor cells showed numerous electron-dense cytoplasmic granules, 250 to 350 nm in diameter, both in follicular and trabecular areas of the tumor. Plasma levels of tumor-associated ACTH, SRIF and thyroglobulin were measured by radioimmunoassay and were found to be within the normal range.

Light microscopic double immunocytochemical stainings, performed on sea bass hypothalamo-hypophysial sections, revealed the projection of different neuropeptide-immunoreactive neurons innervating the hormone-producing cell populations in the pituitary gland. In the rostral pars distalis (PD) the ACTH cells were found in close proximity to fibers immunoreactive for somatostatin (SRIF), growth hormone-releasing hormone (GRF),
corticotropin
-releasing hormone (CRF), vasotocin (VT), isotocin (IT), substance P (SP), neurotensin, and galanin (GAL), while the PRL cell zone seemed only innervated by nerve fibers immunopositive for GAL. In the proximal PD, fibers immunoreactive for SRIF, GRF, VT, IT, cholecystokinin, SP, neuropeptide Y, and GAL formed a close relationship with the growth hormone cells. The gonadotrophs were observed near nerve fibers immunostained for gonadotropin-releasing hormone, IT, and less obviously GRF and VT, while fibers positive for GRF, CRF, VT, IT, SP, and GAL penetrated between and formed a close association with the thyrotrophs. In the pars intermedia the MSH cells and the
PAS
-positive (PAS+) cells seemed both innervated by separate nerve fibers immunoreactive for GRF, CRF, melanin concentrating hormone, VT, IT, and SP. All these results suggest a functional role of the neuropeptides in the adenohypophysis of the sea bass, possibly in the synthesis and/or release of hypophysial hormones from the different cell types.
