State of microbiocenosis of large intestine in rats and furo subjected to constant combined irradiation has been studied in full-scale experiments in the emergency rooms of the Chernobyl NPP and in the nearest zone of its effect. The higher diversity of microflora (as compared to initial one), sharp increase of the amount of Candida genus fungi, a decrease of the number of bifidobacteria and increase of the amount of conditionally pathogenic flora were observed in rats with the dose of external irradiation of 1.43 Gr absorbed for 14 days. The expressed associative character of disbioses is distinctly traced. In furo affected by the radion exceeding the background level feeding with products contaminated by radionuclides leads to changes whose individual character corresponds to the picture of disbiosis under radiation injury.

The radiosensibility of erythropoietic tissue cells was estimated on the basis of analysis of erythrocyte and reticulocyte quantity changes in peripheral blood of the victims of the disaster on the Chernobyl NPP. The radiosensibility of blood cells was evaluated in accordance with their maturity (committed, committed-and-maturing and maturing pools). The population of erythropoietic tissue cells can be divided into two groups on the criterion of their radiosensibility. The first group demonstrates the highest level of radiosensibility varying from 0.5 to 1.73 Gy (n = 1). It includes the cells from primarily committed to basophilic normoblasts. The other group consisting of polychromatophils and oxyphils is more radioresistent. Do of these groups corresponds to their maturity and ascends from 4.7 to 12.9 Gy.

Clinical examination with immune status assessment of more than 300 healthy persons, who worked in 30-km Chernobyl NPP zone four years after the accident was carried out. The clinical characters of immune deficiency were detected in 6.67% of examined persons and appeared as repeated respiratory diseases. Significant increase in mean level of leukocytes and lymphocytes was revealed. Activation of T-helper link of cell immunity was determined by increase of CD4+ cells in 35.2% of examined persons, that were lower than in people who took part in Chernobyl accident amelioration in 1986. Decrease in content of T-cells and B-cells was observed in 1/4 and 3/4 of persons correspondingly by rosette assays. No changes in serum immunoglobulins level was observed.

Samples of different species of mushrooms were collected in the forests contaminated by Chernobyl (ChNPP) accident fallout debris. Sampling sites were located at a distance of 5-200 km from Chernobyl NPP. Transfer factors (TF) for Cs-137 from soil to mushrooms varied from 12 to 5060 nCi kg-1/Ci km-2; TF variability depended on the distance from ChNPP, mushroom species and growth conditions. The highest concentrations of Cs-137 were observed in Paxillus involutus and Xerocomus badius. These species are suggested as bioindicators of radioactive contamination.

We have summarized the results of cytogenetic studies of peripheral blood lymphocytes conducted in the institutions of Kiev and Kharkov in persons irradiated after the accident of the Chernobyl NPP. The average level of chromosomal aberrations and the appearance of cytogenetic markers characteristic of their irradiation effect was higher in the examinees in comparison with the control. The increase in the number of aberrations in certain Kiev residents as well as the development of lymphogranulomatosis in some liquidators of the accident were detected. The increase in the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in liquidators of the accident was accompanied by the reduction in the level of reparative DNA synthesis of blood lymphocytes. The necessity to expand cytogenetic examination in persons that participated in the liquidation of the accident on the ChNPP and Kiev inhabitants is discussed.

Respiratory effects of single positive and negative pressure pulses (PPP, NPP) applied to the functionally isolated upper airways (UA) were studied in 11 anaesthetized cats breathing spontaneously through a tracheal tube. The UA pressure and the changes of tracheal airflow were recorded and the blood pressure and electrocardiogram were occasionally monitored. Sniff-like aspiration reflexes comprising powerful spasmodic inspirations could be elicited by PPP or NPP of 20 to 110 cm H2O or -14 to -140 cm H2O. The responses to NPP but also to PPP characterized by high peak inspiratory flow, mean inspiratory flow and tidal volume (PIF = 312.5 +/- 64.3 and 231.1 +/- 21.7 ml.sec-1; VTI = 178.3 +/- 46.7 and 110.1 +/- 14.4 ml.sec-1; VT = 40.9 +/- 8.3 and 22.5 +/- 1.7 ml) resembled closely the aspiration reflex elicited by mechanical stimulation of the pharyngeal wall. Occasionally, sneezing, minor modifications of breathing pattern and solitary forced inspirations could be induced by lower pressures. The results indicate that sudden pressure stimulation of the UA evokes vigorous respiratory responses including the aspiration reflex. These reflexes and their alterations may contribute to development or release of both UA obstruction and apnoea, at least in cats.

1. Parotid plasma membrane nonpump low-affinity Ca(2+)-ATPase, which possesses high-affinity (Ca2+ + Mg2+)-ATPase activity, was characterized. 2. Purified Ca(2+)-ATPase hydrolyzed the nucleoside triphosphates, GTP, ITP, CTP, UTP, TTP (67-93% of ATP) and nucleoside diphosphates, ADP, GDP, IDP, CDP, TDP (12-40% of ATP) but not AMP and p-NPP. 3. The maximum activities of Ca(2+)- and (Ca2+ + Mg2+)-ATPases were obtained in the presence of 1 mM and 0.13 microM Ca2+, respectively. 4. The Km values for Ca2+ in Ca(2+)- and (Ca2+ + Mg2+)-ATPases were 0.2 mM and 22 nM, respectively. 5. The activities of both Ca(2+)- and (Ca2+ + Mg2+)-ATPases were found in the right-side-out-vesicles obtained from the plasma membrane-rich fraction. 6. These features suggest that Ca(2+)-ATPase is an ecto-Ca(2+)-dependent nucleoside triphosphatase.

Out of 106 firemen who had been engaged in extinguishing fire at Chernobyl NPP in October 11-12, 1991, 39 were examined immediately on the spot and 67--in out-patient department of the Ukrainian Scientific Research Centre of Radiation Medicine. Examination included anamnestic inquest, peripheral blood study and determination of incorporated irradiation. Besides this, about 50 measurements of exposure dose were carried out in the town of Chernobyl, in the NPP territory and in immediate proximity to the site of the accident. Analysis of the data showed that there were no signs of primary reaction of acute atomic disease in all subjects. Measurement of exposure and incorporated doses proved their insignificance with respect to those examined. Complaints and health disorders in firemen are likely to be related to somatic diseases and prolonged emotional exertion during combating fire.

T cell number, serum concentrations of thymic hormones and anti-epithelial autoantibodies were studied in people affected at Chernobyl NPP. Group 1 took part in the clearing-up operation and had no clinical manifestations of acute radiation sickness. Group 2 worked at the NPP during the accident; they survived acute radiation sickness (degree I-II, subgroup 2a; degree III-IV, subgroup 2b). The total doses of external radiation were 0.1-0.5 Gy in group 1, up to 4 Gy in subgroup 2a and up to 9 Gy in subgroup 2b. Total T cell number, serum thymic activity and alpha 1-thymosin concentration were decreased in all groups of affected persons. CD8+ cell number decreased only in group 1; CD4+ cell number in subgroup 2b. A decrease in thymic hormone level was most prominent in subgroup 2b. The titres of anti-epithelial antibodies were increased in all groups of affected persons independently of radiation dose. The titres were higher in patients with subnormal levels of alpha 1-thymosin. It has been proposed that radiation alters the function of thymic epithelial cells by direct action and/or through indirect mechanisms including participation of autoantibodies. The observed complex of alterations is similar to that in the normal process of immunological ageing.

The radioresistance of seeds of populations of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. growing for 5 years in the regions with different levels of radioactive contamination within 30 km zone of Chernobyl NPP was studied. The analysis of comparative radiosensitivity by root test was performed. It has been shown that plants from Arabidopsis population growing under chronic irradiation did not gain an increased radioresistance. The data obtained show that they are more radiosensitive.
