The morphophysiological properties of two generations of seeds from chronically exposed agrocenoses of the Chernobyl NPP accident zone were investigated. The difference in reactions between exposed and control seeds to acute stimulating irradiation and to treatment with biologically active substances was shown. The relationship between the degree of radiation depression of the seed morphological development indexes and biometric characteristics of plants on the plots with different radioactive contamination was revealed.

Three hundred thirteen patients with first-episode psychosis were assessed using the Royal Park Multidiagnostic Instrument for Psychosis (RPMIP) to determine differences among seven DSM-III-R diagnoses in the comparative frequencies and diagnostic efficiencies of DSM-III-R schizophrenia prodromal symptoms. Patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and schizophreniform disorder were significantly more likely to evince prodromal symptoms. A multinomial logit model suggested that individual prodromal symptoms were relatively poor at distinguishing between diagnoses. This was confirmed when sensitivity, specificity, and positive (PPP) and negative (NPP) predictive power of individual prodromal symptoms were examined. Although DSM-III-R schizophrenia prodromal symptoms do occur more commonly in schizophrenia, they are by no means pathognomonic of that disorder.

The Department of Functional Biochemistry was organized at the Institute of Biochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1990. Since that time the collaborators of the Department develop the aldehyde hypothesis of pathogenesis of chronic alcoholism and new high effective methods of its treatment; they have found certain adaptation mechanisms arising in the organism under stress states and pathogenetic mechanisms of formation and development of the radiation encephalopathy in victims of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP. The department researchers have published 92 works.

Recently, the natural vesicant cantharidin was shown to bind exclusively to and inhibit protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) in mouse tissue extracts (Li and Casida (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 11867-11870). To explore the generality of this effect in vesicant action, we measured the protein serine/threonine phosphatase activity in mouse liver cytosol (in the form of the okadaic acid inhibitable increment of p-nitrophenyl phosphate (p-NPP) phosphatase activity) in the presence of aqueous sulfur mustard or its hydrolysis product, bis(hydroxyethyl)sulfide (TDG). Sulfur mustard inhibited p-NPP hydrolysis. However, inhibition correlated with the time elapsed between thawing and the addition of mustard to the enzyme preparation, not with concentration. TDG exhibited a direct, concentration-related inhibition of p-NPP hydrolysis between 30 and 300 microM. We conclude that sulfur mustard also has an inhibitory effect on protein serine/threonine phosphatases. However, the inhibition is an effect of its non-alkykating hydrolysis product TDG, not of sulfur mustard itself.

The paper reports on the preliminary experience of treatment of those patients having been the victims to the reactor accident at the Chernobyl NPP as well as of those with acute and chronic leukoses, having received courses of modern cytostatic therapy. The patients were exposed to therapeutic plasmapheresis and enterosorption as part of a complex conventional treatment programme. The conclusion the authors have come to is as follows: enterosorption strikingly reduces manifestations of "cytostatic disease"; the use of plasmapheresis in those persons having been previously exposed to small dose chronic radiation, makes for improvement of clinical and laboratory values but further studies are warranted to determine indications for therapeutic plasmapheresis.

Supply of the Chernobyl NPP staff and Slavutich children with vitamins and minerals has been examined in spring 1992. From 43 to 100% of people have moderate deficiency of vitamin C, B1, B2, B6 and folic acid, 6-61%--deep deficiency of these nutrients. Most of the people have insufficient supply with vitamins in the form of polyhypovitaminosis, i.e. combined deficiency of ascorbic acid and of 2 or 3 vitamins of the B group. Deficiency of 2 vitamins was found in 20% of adults of 3 vitamins in 37%, of 4 vitamins in 29% and of 1 vitamin in 10% of adults. Only 4% of examined adults are sufficiently supplied with all vitamins and none of children. Deficiency of 1 vitamin was found in 11% of children, of 2 vitamins in 15%, of 3 vitamins in 17%, of 4 vitamins in 35%, of 5 vitamins in 20% and of 6 vitamins in 2% of children. Supply of children with all vitamins has been improved when they received combined vitamin-mineral preparation "Duovit" for one month. Universal prophylactic vitaminization by means of administration of ascorbic acid and polyvitamin preparations in doses corresponding to the daily physiological requirement should be recommended as the most reliable, effective and economical measure aimed to improve supply of the population with vitamins.

Quantitative differences in the content of lactic acid bacteria isolated from the content of the stomach, small and large intestine have been established when studying microflora of the gastrointestinal tract of minks kept in the 30-kilometer zone of the Chernobyl NPP (experimental animals) and at the Cherkassy fur farm (control animals). Obligate heterofermentative species of lactic acid bacteria related to Lactobacillus fermentum and L. reuteri prevailed in the stomach of experimental minks. Species composition of lactic acid bacteria isolated from the stomach of the Cherkassy minks is characterized by the availability of both obligate and facultative heterofermentative species of bacteria--L. bavaricus, L. coryniformis, L. reuteri and of obligate homofermentative bacteria--L. salivarius and L. jensenii. In limiting dilutions (10(-9)-10(-10)) of the content of small intestine of the control minks one could find bacteria of L. coryniformis species and representatives of obligate heterofermentative bacteria--L. confusus and L. fermentum that is 1-2 orders higher then in the experimental minks. Both lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria (the latter up to 10(+9) cells/g of the content) were isolated from the lower departments of small and large intestine of the Chernobyl and Cherkassy minks. Among the species of lactic acid bacteria isolated from the experimental animals homofermentative species (L. acidophilus, L. sharpeae) and, heterofermentative (L. confusus, L. fermentum) in the control were found.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Fires during summer period of 1992 within 30-km zone near Chernobyl NPP lead to short-term increase of both 137Cs concentration in the air and ratios 137Cs/90Sr and 137Cs/238Pu as compared to quite conditions. The concentration of 137Cs resulted from the fires of various types was estimated. It was found that this value could exceed the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for population if the soil contamination density was greater than 0.5 Ci/km2 and MPC for professionals at contamination density 7 Ci/km2. Fires lead to increase in inhaled radiation dose, whereas exposure dose rate remains unchanged.

Samples of sandy forest soils, meadow sandy-peat soil and meadow sandy-loam soil were taken at different sites within a 30-km zone around the Chernobyl NPP (ChNPP). The samples were extracted with water and a 0.1-N solution of ammonium acetate. The extracts were measured for gamma-radionuclides and stable cation content. The content of all mobile forms of the radionuclides present in the 0-10-cm soil layer accounts for 0.5-5% of the total radionuclide content in this layer, depending on the type of radionuclide and soil. Water soluble forms of the radionuclides were found in the 0-5-cm layer only. Exchangeable radionuclide forms were represented, as a rule, by radiocaesium in both the 0-5- and 5-10-cm layers. Content of Cs-137 exchangeable forms in the organic-mineral horizon were roughly inversely proportional to the sum of stable exchangeable cations and organic matter content. Forest vegetation takes up a significant share of the mobile forms of radiocaesium from the soils.

Among ecological disasters the aftermath of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP present an undoubted chronic anthropogenic stress situation. Psychological stress is manifested by somatic, predominantly vasovegetative disorders, as well as by pre-nosological and clinical forms of mental disorders. Phasing and reconstructive principle forms a basis for the organizational and structural activity of specialized psychoneurological institutions dealing with rehabilitation and readaptation of the participants in the elimination of the ChNPP accident aftereffects.
