Altogether 16 persons with STH-producing hypophyseal adenoma were investigated by tacho-oscillography, total rheography, blood taken from the ulnar vein, a radioimmunoassay to determine the levels of STH, ACTH, cortisol, deoxycorticosterone, aldosterone, T3, T4, vasopressin, prostaglandin E2, 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha, and plasma renin activity. Acromegalic patients demonstrated an elevated level of STH, and prostaglandin E2 secretion was inhibited. Two groups of patients were singled out according to the hemodynamic state: the 1st group was characterized by a hyperkinetic type of circulation and normotension of borderline hypertension; the 2nd group was characterized by hypokinetic circulation, increased vascular resistance, labile or stable arterial hypertension. The interrelationship of hemodynamic and hormonal indices was unnoticed. It has been assumed that of pathogenetic importance in the development of arterial hypertension is depletion of E2 production, and at early stages--body liquid retention resulting from hypersomatotropinemia.

The author presents an account of selected important findings in endocrinology during the last year. The mediator of action of STH, IGF-I, was tested as a protein anabolic in a child with Laron's nanism. STH is about to be tested as a geriatric drug. A non-peptide vasopressin antagonist was described. Melatonin is being tested in sleep disorders. A combination of methimazol and thyroxine is more suitable for treatment of Graves-Basedow's disease than the goitrogen alone. Dermal vasoconstriction can be an indicator of the effectiveness of glucocorticoids in asthma. Significant advances were made in the sphere of the new hormone, NO: it is not only an effective vasorelaxing agent but also a neuromodulator and participates in the natural lymphocytic cytotoxicity. Marked advances were made as regards knowledge of the endogenous ligand for benzodiazepine receptors.

HFRS-related oliguria brings about hyperactivity of the system hypothalamus-hypophysis-adrenals and hyperfunction of the pancreas; glucose, urea and creatinine plasma levels are elevated. Prednisolone treatment leads to diminution of ACTH and cortisol levels, elevation of glucose, insulin and C-peptide concentrations in plasma compared to prednisolone-untreated patients, producing insignificant effect on plasma levels of STH, vasopressin, aldosterone, area and creatinine. Therefore, a course administration of glucocorticoids to HFRS patients is justified only in severe collapses and hypopituitary coma confirmed by the laboratory methods.

The endocrine function of the thyroid and gonads has for long been investigated using the corresponding releasing hormones (TRH- and LHRH-test, respectively). The adrenal cortex has, up to now, been stimulated using insulin-induced hypoglycaemia or lysine-vasopressin and growth hormone stimulated using arginine. New diagnostic possibilities have arisen with the isolation of the corresponding releasing-hormones, CRF and GRF, and with the availability of these too for clinical use. Using the four above mentioned releasing-hormones in a global pituitary-stimulation-test, the secretion of ACTH, cortisol, STH, TSH, LH, FSH and prolactin hormones can now be examined together.
