A series of amiphiphilic cellulose-based graft copolymers (
MCC
-g-
PLA
) with various molecular factors were synthesized in ionic liquid BmimCl and characterized by FT-IR, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, XRD, and TGA. Their solubility in a variety of solvents was compared. The prepared
MCC
-g-
PLA
copolymers can self-assemble into spherical nanomicelles (10-50 nm) in aqueous solution. The self-assembly behaviors of the
MCC
-g-
PLA
copolymers were systematically investigated by fluorescence probe. Furthermore, the hydrophobic antitumor drug paclitaxel (PTX) was successfully encapsulated into the
MCC
-g-
PLA
micelles. The drug encapsulation efficiency and loading content were found to be as high as 89.30% (w/w) and 4.97%, respectively. Results in this study not only suggest a promising cellulose-based antitumor drug carrier but also provide information for property-directed synthesis of the cellulose graft
PLA
copolymers.

A biodegradable and amphiphilic copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(l-lactide-co-2-methyl-2-carboxyl-propylene carbonate) (mPEG-b-P(LA-co-
MCC
)), which contains pendant carboxyl groups, was chosen as a drug carrier for the active anticancer part (diaminocyclohexane platinum, DACH-Pt) of oxaliplatin to form mPEG-b-P(LA-co-
MCC
/Pt) complex. A folic acid-conjugated copolymer, folic acid-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(L-lactide) (FA-PEG-
PLA
), with similar chemical structure was chosen for targeting. Multifunctional micelles were successfully prepared by a coassembling method. In vitro evaluation was performed by using SKOV-3 and MCF-7 cancer cells. In vivo blood clearance of platinum was studied, and the results show that micelles exhibit longer blood circulation after iv injection. Pt biodistribution was studied by measuring its levels in plasma, organs, and tumors, especially in tumor cell DNA, by atomic absorption and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Antitumor activity was assessed in mice bearing H22 liver cancers, and the results showed that the micelles with FA moieties exhibited greater antitumor efficacy than those without FA or oxaliplatin. Therefore, these novel multifunctional platinum micelles have great potential in future clinical application.

The current study evaluates aerobic biodegradation of melt extruded poly(lactic acid)
PLA
based blends under composting conditions. Samples of neat
PLA
(NPLA) and bio-based polyblend composites of
PLA
/LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) having different concentration of
MCC
(microcrystalline cellulose crystal) were analyzed to understand the biodegradation behavior of these blends under simulated composting conditions. Biodegradation kinetics revealed that higher content of
MCC
and
PLA
accelerated the biodegradation process of the polymeric blends. Increase in the spherulite growth size and decrease in the spherulite density of the biodegraded samples confirmed the decline in amorphous portion of the test samples due to microbial assimilation, leaving behind the crystalline portion. Surface morphological analysis revealed that the samples of
PLA
/LLDPE/
MCC
blends underwent surface erosion prior to bulk biodegradation (50-80%) until the 90th day and the
PLA
formed fibril-like structures after degradation. This study would help in the design and preparation of biodegradable bio-based commercial blends in the future.
