The solids produced at an urban wastewater treatment plant, tested semiquantitatively, almost all contained human intestinal viruses. Reoviruses and five or more types of enteroviruses were present. Sludge, digested anaerobically at 30 degrees-32 degrees C, and grit contained measurable levels of viruses. Until reliable means of inactivating the viruses have been developed and implemented, great care should be taken in disposing of these solids.

Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine factory-sharpened, dulled, and resharpened scalers. The following observations were made: 1. The factory sharpened scalers exhibited metallic extensions from the lateral surface (wire edges). 2. The machine-resharpened instruments resulted in nonfunctional wire edges from the facial surface. Honing produced an exact meeting of facial and lateral surfaces. 3. Hand sharpening, using an Arkansas stone (grit 500) against the lateral surface away from the cutting edge, effected an exact meeting of the facial and lateral surfaces and no evidence of wire edges. 4. From this study an optimum cutting edge for a scaler is characterized as having a smooth, contiguous meeting of the facial and lateral surfaces free of wire edges. If a wire edge is present, it should be functional.

The present investigation was initiated to evaluate the wear resistance of filled and unfilled resins which may be suitable for fissure sealing. Two commercial unfilled resins (Adaptic Glaze and Delton), three degrees of diluted composite (Adaptic diluted with Adaptic Bonding Agent) and undiluted composite (Adaptic) were studied. Abrasion was caused by 400-grit silicon carbide paper in a mechanical surface grinder. Ten specimens of each of the material samples were tested. The unfilled resins were abraded three to six times more readily than the composite samples. Undiluted composite was the most resistant, whereas samples of increasing degrees of dilution were abraded to increasing extents. However, even the most diluted composite, although very fluid, was at least three times more resistant than the unfilled samples. The results of this study indicate that adding inorganic filler particles to a resin, even in small amounts, greatly enhances the wear resistance of such materials.

The most frequent complaints registered against composite restorations are stained margins and a rough surface. The stained margins have many causes such as (1) fracturing or crazing of enamel during preparation of the cavity, (2) using a composite having an excessive curing shrinkage, (3) manipulating too slowly, which permits a loss of plasticity during placement, (4) maintaining inadequate pressure during setting or curing of the composite, and (5) using finishing instruments which cause defects in the margin area of the tooth and/or composite. All of these the operator can control, and if not, the defect will be built into the restoration. The roughness of composites can be reduced by polishing with the finest grit available in disks and by coating with a glaze. Today's composite restorations placed with care will provide long lasting esthetic restorations providing they are not placed in areas subjected to load bearing abrasion.

The dentitions of adult Arikara Indians from the Larson site (39WW2) were examined to determine the frequency and etiology of noncarious interproximal grooves. The observations included groove morphology, loci and association with dental pathology. Approximately 30% of the individuals exhibit one or more pronounced grooves. The use of dental probes in conjunction with dietary grit is the likely responsible for interproximal grooves in this population sample.

Distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in sewage wastes at a municipal sewage treatment plant was studied, showing that the great bulk of PCBs entering such a treatment plant become adsorbed onto the grit chamber solids and the sludge that is passed from the anaerobic digesters. When appreciable quantities of PCBs are present in sewage, as was the case in this study, significant quantities can nevertheless pass with the effluents discharged from the treatment plant. The PCB concentrations in the treatment plant waters undergoing secondary and tertiary treatment tend to be consistent with the limited solubility properties of the PCBs. However, appreciably higher concentrations can be found in the sediments of waters receiving treatment plant discharges and bioaccumulation in fish is demonstrated readily. Also described are quantitative data on PCBs in soils fertilized with PCB-contaminated sludge.

The effect of different modes of the hydrothermal treatment of buckwheat and of the grit cooking on a change in the composition of sterols and phospholipids was investigated. While not changing the qualitative composition of sterols and phospholipids, the hydrothermal and culinary treatment was found to produce some changes in the correlation of their individual fractions.

Two experimental methods were used to produce wear striations in one direction on unworn teeth. These include: (1) sliding 22 American Indian (Juntunen site, Michigan; Late Woodland) newly erupted incisors, by hand, across a flat grass surface covered with fine loose sand; and (2) using a unidirectional motor driven mechanical wear machine to draw 56 modern human dental extractions across a flat glass surface covered with silicon carbide powder of different grit sizes. A scanning electron microscope examination of individual wear striation morphology indicates that these wear striations begin with broad pits and have extending grooves that become narrower; characteristics that indicate the motion of wear. Patterns of wear striations on the worn dentitions of American Indians (Juntunen site) and the paleocene primate Phenacolemur pagei show similar characteristics and correspond to the buccal phase of mastication when the mandible is drawn upward, forward and slightly medially into centric occlusion. The data provided by this study can be used to test competing hypotheses concerning the direction of mandibular movement during mastication and food preparation.

Fusarium moniliforme NRRL 6322 produced about 600 mg of recoverable moniliformin, a mycotoxic metabolite, per kg of corn grit medium. The moniliformin was extracted from the grits with methanol, purified by preparative thin-layer chromatography, and crystallized from ether. The 50% lethal dose for chicken embryos was 2.8 microgram per egg. For 1-day-old chicks dosed with moniliformin by crop intubation and for female and male mice injected intraperitoneally, the 50% lethal doses were 5.4, 20.9, and 29.1 mg per kg of body weight, respectively. The toxin did not cause a reaction on mouse skin.

The amino acids composition of summary proteins in unground buckwheat of four common and promising varieties grown in the Ukraine was investigated by using ion-exchange chromatography with an automatic analyzor Hd-1200 E. Between individual varieties of buckweheat no essential differences in the amino acids content were in evidence. The total proteins of the buckwheat grit contain high quantities of lysine, treonine, leucine, glutamic acid and arginine. The amino acids score was instrumental in determining the biological value and in eliciting amino acids limiting this value in different grits. These data may be made use of in the practice of public catering for estimating formulae of meals prepared with grits differently combined with other products securing an improved amino acids composition of ready-to-eat meals.
