This study measured the shear bond strength (SBS) of 3 self-etching bonding agents to enamel and dentin with and without
agitation
at 3 different application times. The null hypotheses tested were that
agitation
and application time have no effect on bond strength. Occlusal surfaces of 180 recently extracted caries-free human molars were wet ground with 600
grit
wet-dry silica carbide abrasive paper to obtain a flat enamel surface. The teeth were divided into 18 groups of 10 teeth. Three self-etching bonding agents, Clearfil SE BOND (Kuraray America), Xeno III (Dentsply) and AdheSE (Ivoclar-Vivadent) were applied using application times of 10, 20 or 30 seconds with or without
agitation
, thinned with a gentle stream of air and cured for 10 seconds, according to manufacturers' directions. Z100 (3M ESPE) composite, A2 shade, was placed over the cured adhesive and cured for 40 seconds. The samples were stored in distilled water at room temperature until testing. The samples were tested in shear to failure with a 1-mm/minute crosshead speed. After enamel shear bond strength testing, the teeth were again ground with 400 and 600-
grit
wet-dry SiC paper to obtain a flat dentin surface. The protocol used for preparing the enamel bond test samples was repeated, and the teeth were stored until testing in distilled water at room temperature. The samples were again tested in shear at a 1-mm/minute crosshead speed. Values were converted to MPa and data analyzed for intergroup differences using ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests.
Agitation
did not improve enamel SBS for any of the materials tested, but there was a significant difference in enamel SBS among materials: Clearfil SE Bond shear bond strength was greater than Xeno III, which was greater than AdheSE. At 10 seconds application time on dentin,
agitation
improved the Clearfil SE Bond SBS and, at 20 seconds application time on dentin,
agitation
significantly improved SBS to dentin for all systems tested.
Agitation
had no affect when the adhesive was applied to dentin for 30 seconds. Clearfil SE Bond SBS to dentin was significantly higher than the other self-etching adhesives tested except at 10 seconds without
agitation
.

The surface properties of three different resin composite materials which influence Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation were evaluated using an artificial mouth system (AMS). Specimens were prepared from Clearfil AP-X, Grandio, and Reactmer Paste, and each material was divided into two groups: (1) surface was ground with 800-
grit
silicon paper (SiC#800); or (2) surface was polished with up to 1- microm diamond paste (DP1 microm). Biofilms were grown on the surface of each specimen for 20 hours, and then subjected to vortex
agitation
followed by measurement of retained biofilms. Surfaces with retained biofilms were also inspected by SEM. Significant differences were detected in surface roughness (Ra) between the two polishing conditions for all materials. The quantity of retained biofilm was significantly less (p < 0.05) on Clearfil AP-X DP 1 microm than on Clearfil AP-X SiC#800. With Reactmer Paste, their surfaces registered the lowest amount of retained biofilm--but there were no significant differences between the two polishing conditions. In conclusion, polishing did not render all resin composites equally resistant to biofilm formation.

Single-step self-etch adhesive systems have been developed to simplify and shorten bonding procedures. With the gain in popularity of these simplified systems, their reliability has become a focus of interest. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adhesive application method on enamel bond strength. Two commercial single-step self-etch adhesive systems, Clearfil tri-S Bond, and G-Bond, were used. Bovine mandibular incisors were mounted in self-curing resin and the facial enamel surfaces were ground wet on 600-
grit
SiC paper. Adhesives were only applied without
agitation
(inactive) or were agitated by a brush (active), and resin composites were condensed into the mold on the enamel surface and light-activated. Ten specimens per test group were stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, then shear-tested at a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/min. Two-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey HSD test were used. The bond strengths for active application were higher than those for inactive application. Significant differences were found for both adhesive systems. From the results of this study, active application of single-step self-etch adhesive may help to ensure the creation of a roughened enamel surface and enhance the penetration of resin monomer into the subsurface demineralized enamel.

The concentrations of airborne culturable microorganisms were determined in wastewater and sludge treatment processes of seven sewage treatment plants. Two types of coliphages, Salmonella and total viable bacteria were sampled by the BioSampler and the numbers of faecal coliforms and enterococci were obtained from the Andersen 6-stage impactor. The BioSampler recovered higher numbers of airborne coliphage viruses than has been measured with other liquid samplers in previous studies, suggesting that this sampler has improved efficiency for sampling airborne coliphages. Airborne coliphages were detected in many stages of the wastewater or sludge treatment process. The highest microbiological air contaminations were found in pre-treatment and aerated
grit
separation stages of the operation. This was attributed to aerosolisation of microorganisms by mechanical handling or forced aeration. Aeration and settling processes located outdoors caused low microbial concentrations, but the brush aerator released more microorganisms into the air. Our results emphasize the necessity for controlling the exposure of sewage workers to airborne microorganisms, especially in process areas that involve mechanical
agitation
or forced aeration of wastewater.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the smear layer on the micro-tensile bond strength when two self-etching adhesives were used with different techniques. Flat dentine surfaces were prepared using either medium
grit
diamond burs or tungsten carbide burs. Ten specimens from each prepared surfaces were subjected for smear layer evaluation under SEM. Forty specimens from each of the prepared surfaces were further divided into two groups, bonded with either Clearfil SE Bond (SE) or Clearfil S(3) Bond (S3) using one of four applications (as manufacturer's instructions,
agitation
, reapplication, and increased application time), restored with composites and subjected to a micro-tensile bond strength test. Smear layers created with diamond burs were thicker than those created with tungsten carbide burs. Surfaces prepared with tungsten carbide burs produced a higher bond strength than those prepared with diamond burs and the same type of adhesive resin. SE demonstrated a higher bond strength than S3 for all surfaces. S3 applied with the
agitation
technique demonstrated a higher bond strength to dentine prepared with tungsten carbide and diamond burs than that applied with other techniques. SE applied with increased time on dentine treated with carbide burs produced the highest bond strength. In conclusion, a thick smear layer decreased bond strength to dentine, and this might be improved by modification of application technique.
