The relationship between serum lipid levels and measures of benign prostatic hyperplasia was investigated. The study was community based. All the participants had undergone a urological investigation which included International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS) and Quality of Life Score (QoL), serum lipid concentrations and determination of prostate volume with transrectal ultrasonography. Body mass index was calculated with the formula of weight (kg)/surface area (m(2)) respectively.
Men
were considered obese if their body mass index was over 25 kg/m(2). BPH was defined by prostate volume greater than 20 ml and I-
PSS
greater than seven. Comparisons of serum lipid levels between men with BPH and without BPH were done. There was no correlation for serum lipid levels with either mean I-
PSS
and QoL scores. However, triglyceride and cholesterol levels were the lowest in severe symptomatic men than men with low symptoms. Using clinical definition of BPH that prostate volume was greater than 20 ml and I-
PSS
was greater than seven, men with BPH had not significantly different serum lipid levels from men without BPH. Our population-based data reflect that there was no relationship between serum lipid levels and certain physiological measures of lower urinary tract symptoms and clinical benign prostatic hyperplasia.

This study aimed to assess levels of stress in Croatian adult population using
PSS
, in a population study (Croatian Adult Cohort Health Study - CroHort). Our results show that the levels of stress were 17.46 (SD = 6.73) for men and 18.32 (SD = 6.46) for women in Croatia. The lowest levels of stress experienced men living in urban area while women living in rural area had the highest level.
Men
and women who had university degree had significantly lower level of stress. The lowest levels of stress experienced participants who had much better financial condition than average. In men, stress was associated to weak heart, lower back pain, poor financial condition of the household and high alcohol consumption. In women, stress was associated to poor mental health, poor social functioning, poorer financial condition of the household, higher age, lower education, low monthly income of the household and poor general health.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common in older men and are frequently associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The relationship between BPH and endogenous total testosterone (TT) levels has been widely studied. The aim of this post hoc analysis was to determine the association between LUTS and endogenous TT levels in a subset of men participating in the 2013 Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, a U.S. community-based prostate cancer screening program.
Men
completed the International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS) questionnaire, prostate size was estimated by a digital rectal examination, and serum TT and prostate-specific antigen levels were measured. Mean TT levels (ng/dl) did not significantly correlate with prostate size category (r = +.03, p = .69): normal, 419.2 (n = 106); enlarged, 394.7 (n = 71); abnormal, 416.4 (n = 7); and abnormal/suspicious, 515.2 (n = 19). Mean TT levels (ng/dl) did not significantly correlate with I-
PSS
category (r = -.06, p = .40): none, 468.5 (n = 15); mild, 414.0 (n = 138); moderate, 397.4 (n = 66); and severe, 437.9 (n = 7). Mean TT levels (ng/dl) did not significantly correlate with I-
PSS
quality of life rating (r = -.13, p = .055): delighted, 474.5 (n = 43); pleased, 424.6 (n = 65); mostly satisfied, 361.2 (n = 63); mixed, 448.2 (n = 29); mostly dissatisfied, 337.2 (n = 17); and unhappy, 435.8 (n = 6). Adjustment for prostate size or prostate-specific antigen levels yielded similar findings. In conclusion, endogenous TT levels did not correlate with LUTS or prostate size, and these findings support the saturation theory in which TT is not able to induce further androgen-stimulated prostate tissue growth due to receptor saturation. Any worsening of LUTS following testosterone replacement therapy in hypogonadal men may be related to stimulation of prostatic cells previously deprived of testosterone.

Background and objectives
: Stress is a common term used to describe various adverse psychological conditions. Students in the dentistry field face many negative psychological outcomes. The core factors for stress among dental students are related to their training course and social contacts with peers. This research aimed to assess the stress of dental students depending on their gender and study year.
Materials and methods
: We used the Perceived Stress Scale (
PSS
-10) and Mini-COPE questionnaire. The surveys were conducted among 446 dental students (320 women and 126 men) at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.
Results
: For the second-year and fifth-year students, the differences in scores were statistically significant, while in both cases, men had significantly lower values on the analysed scale. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test indicated significantly lower values on the
PSS
-10 scale for the third-year and fourth-year students than in first-year students. The performed statistical analysis of the data obtained from the Mini-COPE questionnaire showed significant differences between men and women in individual years of study. In the first year, women chose more often the strategies related to turning to religion (
p
= 0.007), seeking emotional support (
p
= 0.046), seeking instrumental support (
p
= 0.045) and dealing with something else
(p
= 0.029) in coping with stress than men.
Conclusions
: The highest level of stress was found among first-year dental students. Moreover, women were characterised with higher stress levels than men.
Men
more often use psychoactive substances and resort to a sense of humour to cope with stress. On the other hand, women turn to religion, seek instrumental and emotional support.
