A contamination with Mycobacterium scrofulaceum was experienced in a colony of BALB/c-nu/nu mice. The contamination was noticed after introduction of C57BL/6 and C57BL/6. Lyt l. 1 strains into facilities that kept the colony. M. scrofulaceum seemed to be spread by oral infestation and cross-contamination of fecal excretions during handling of the mice. The organisms were shed continually or intermittently into feces of weaned nu/+ and nu/nu mice of BALB/c background, and were isolated from the mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen of some of the mice. Some of the bacillus-carrying mice developed serum antibody to M. scrofulaceum of IgG and IgA classes and gave a low degree of hypersensitivity to PPD from M. tuberculosis.

After evaluation of presence of nits and/or lice, PARA aerosol(bioallethrin with piperonyl butoxide) was applied to 97 women and 43 girls, regardless of the results of their infestation, living at 2 separate institutions. Twelve days after the first treatment the second treatment was carried out and the presence of head lice was examined for the evaluation of treatment effect. Among total 140 subjects, 98(70.0%) were nit positive and 85(60.7%) were louse positive. The infestation rates of girls by nit(86.0%) and louse(86.0%) were higher than those of women, nit 62.9% and louse 49.5% (p less than 0.01). Also the detection rate of lice among nit positive subjects was higher in girls(100%) than in women(78.7%). On the second evaluation 12 days after treatment, 36(97.3%) out of 37 girls and 46(95.8%) out of 48 women were found louse-free. There was no difference in the treatment efficacy between the women and girls.

Isoperoxidases were detected in resistant Rossol and susceptible Roma VF tomato roots uninfected and infected by Meloidogyne incognita. Syringaldazine, guaiacol, p-phenylenediamine-pyrocatechol (PPD-PC), and indoleacetic acid (IAA) were used as substrates, and the corresponding peroxidative activities were detected either in cytoplasmic or in cell wall fractions, except for IAA oxidase, which was measured in soluble and microsomal fractions. Isoperoxidase activities and cellular locations were induced differently in resistant and susceptible cultivars by nematodes. Nematode infestation markedly enhanced syringaldazine oxidase activity in cell walls of the resistant cultivar. This isoperoxidase is involved in the last step of lignin deposition in plants. Conversely, the susceptible cultivar reacted to M. incognita infection with an increase in cytoplasmic PPD-PC oxidase activity, which presumedly is involved in ethylene production; no changes in cell wall isoperoxidases were observed. IAA oxidase was inhibited in susceptible plants after nematode inoculation, whereas in resistant plants this activity increased in the soluble fraction and decreased in the microsomal fraction.

Aortitis results from aortic inflammation, frequent causes being infections and rheumatological disorders. The authors report the case of a 33-year-old black male with recent arterial hypertension, who presented with recurrent abdominal pain, jaundice, anorexia, weight loss and diarrhoea. Laboratory work-up was compatible with inflammatory anaemia and obstructive jaundice, while abdominal imaging revealed a dilated biliary tract, no visible gallstones, cephalic pancreatic globosity and aortic thickening. Pancreatic aspirate was negative for malignant cells, bacteria and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The jaundice spontaneously subsided and the pancreatic globosity improved over time. Following positive PPD and IGRA, isoniazid was started. However, follow-up investigations revealed a severe bulbar stenosis with intense eosinophilic infiltrate, multiple non-necrotizing granulomas, and thoracic and abdominal aortitis not previously recognized. Immunological profile (ECA, ANCA and IgG4), eggs and parasites in stool samples were negative. The multisystemic disease, with an insidious and migrating behaviour, gastrointestinal and vascular involvement, granulomatous inflammatory response and tissue eosinophilia, raised the suspicion of a parasitic infestation (despite negative screening) or vasculitis. After 7 days of empirical treatment with albendazole and ivermectin, the patient passed a specimen of Ascaris lumbricoides in the stool and improved clinically.
