Raccoons (Procyon lotor) were live-trapped and examined for ticks from July 1990 to July 1993 in the coastal plain of North Carolina on Marine Corps Base,

Lejeune, North Carolina (USA). Five species of ixodid ticks were found on 351 (78%) of 449 raccoons. Amblyomma americanum was the most abundant tick found on raccoons. Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes texanus, and Ixodes scapularis were frequently collected, while Ixodes cookei were rarely collected from raccoons. Tick burdens were not affected by the age, sex, or trap location of captured raccoons. Ticks parasitizing raccoons had varying seasonal patterns of abundance. Amblyomma americanum were generally collected from raccoons year around, but

intensities were greatest in summer from June to September. Dermacentor variabilis adults were most abundant in mid-summer while peak numbers of larvae were collected in the fall.
Infestation
intensities of Ixodes texanus larvae were greatest in fall and winter months while nymphs were most abundant in winter and spring. No males were collected from raccoons, but females were most frequently collected in the spring and declined in abundance in the summer with no specimens collected in the fall or winter. Numbers of 1. scapularis adults appeared to reach peak numbers in the fall while larvae and nymphs were most abundant on raccoons in winter. Spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi, were identified in a small percentage (0.2%) of host-seeking A. americanum nymphs and adults, and I. scapularis adults by immunofluorescent antibody assays. Similarly, a small percentage (1.9%) of host-associated A. americanum, D. variabilis, I. texanus and I. cookei contained B. burgdorferi. Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes were cultured from the blood of 23 (26%) of 87 raccoons.

We asked if fleas more frequently remain on those California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) that are likely to emigrate from their natal nest. In

Ohlone, Alameda County, California, juvenile male squirrels were infested with more fleas (Oropsylla montana) than were juvenile females, and juveniles of both sexes were infested with more fleas (O. montana and Hoplopsyllus anomalus) than adults. There was no difference between the adult sexes in the number of fleas. The disproportionate
infestation
of male juveniles was accounted for almost exclusively by male O. montana. Greater activity on the part of juvenile males did not account for this difference; the activity of male and female juveniles was very similar. As yearlings, male squirrels established home ranges at greater distances from the natal burrow than did females. Remaining on ranging male squirrels might help male fleas find nonsibling mates in new nests, whereas female fleas might tend to stay in the natal nest in order to assure their progeny of its resources. Flea behavior, modified by characteristics of the host that are sex-specific and predictive of future traits, such as the tendency to range, may thus determine the nature and extent of infestations in juvenile squirrels.

, blueberry plantings. There were no significant differences in captures of D. oxycoccana adults on unbaited sticky board traps, regardless of color (yellow, white, green, or blue). In a separate experiment, three monitoring techniques, yellow unbaited sticky boards, larval/adult emergence from infested buds, and bud dissection, were evaluated for detecting D. oxycoccana, eggs, larvae, and adults. In total, four bud types were examined, including rabbiteye floral, rabbiteye leaf, southern highbush floral, and southern highbush leaf. The emergence monitoring technique detected significantly more D. oxycoccana adults than the other techniques evaluated. Emergence and dissection techniques performed equally well for detecting D. oxycoccana larvae. Dissection was the only technique capable of detecting D. oxycoccana eggs. Overall, the highest numbers of D. oxycoccana eggs were detected in southern highbush leaf buds. However, larval

was lower for southern highbush leaf buds compared with other bud types sampled. Hypotheses to explain this phenomenon are discussed. The fewest number of eggs was recorded for southern highbush flower buds, potentially because these buds develop before peak emergence of D. oxycoccana. Managing D. oxycoccana in infested plantings can be improved by incorporating monitoring techniques, specifically bud dissection to search for eggs, that will aid growers in making timely insecticide applications.

The transmission dynamics of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap) and Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) among Ixodes scapularis (Is) and mammalian hosts was investigated at

Ripley, an area representative of central Minnesota. Prevalence of white-footed mouse infection with Ap and Bb were 20% and 42%, respectively, with a coinfection level of 14%. Peak levels of infection with both agents occurred in May. The average levels of seropositivity to Ap and Bb were 29.3% and 48%, respectively. Of the mice infected with Ap, 47.5% were able to eliminate the pathogen as compared with 19.4% of mice infected with Bb. Ap was detected in 88.4% of 43 eastern chipmunks examined and isolated from 44.7% of the animals. Bb was present in 72.7% of 11 chipmunks examined, and 100% of the animals were also infected with Ap. Megacopta cribraria (F.) (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) is an invasive pest of soybean that has spread across the southeastern United States since its initial discovery in 2009 in Georgia. Previous studies in the southeastern states have documented both the population dynamics of this pest and host plant resistance (HPR) among soybean varieties, although the specific mechanisms of HPR remain unknown. The objectives of this study were, therefore, to 1) quantify field resistance to M. cribraria in multiple soybean varieties in two states previously affected by severe M. cribraria infestations, North Carolina (NC) and South Carolina (SC); and 2) study the role of soybean trichome density in imparting resistance against M. cribraria.
