The pesticide p-p'-DDT and its persistent metabolite p-p'-DDE cause
thinning
of the eggshells in several species of birds. In earlier investigations on ducks this
thinning
was found to be associated with a reduction of the ATP-dependent Ca2+ binding to a homogenate of the shell gland mucosal cells by DDE. The activity of a Ca2+-Mg2+-activated ATPase in the homogenate was also decreased on administration of DDE in vivo. We have therefore investigated the in vitro effects of some other chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides of ecotoxicological interest on the ATP-dependent Ca2+ binding and the Ca2+-Mg2+-activated ATPase activity in a homogenate of the eggshell gland mucosa of the hen and determined the molar concentrations that produced 50% inhibition (=IC50). , o-p'-DDE, p-p'-DDT, methoxychlor and PCB (Arochlor 1242), had a similar IC50 to inhibit the Ca2+ binding as p-p'-DDE. Lindane, p-p'-DDA and biphenyl had an IC50 3.3-4 times higher and that of 2.4 D was 13.5 times higher than that of p-p'-DDE. When the IC50 of some of the compounds (p-p'-DDE, PCB, toxaphene, Lindane) was determined that decreased the Ca2+-Mg2+-activated ATPase of the homogenate it was found to be only 18 to 29 per cent of that needed to inhibit the Ca2+ binding by the homogenate. It is therefore probable that some other effect than inhibition of this enzyme is also involved in the Ca2+-binding process and affected by the compounds.

New indications have recently appeared for cardiac pacing with haemodynamic and antiarrhythmic objectives without any symptomatic bradycardia. The best documented indication, though relatively rare, is stimulation of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; initially reserved for cases with favorable results of an acute haemodynamic test, it is now used in other cases without this criterion; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy without permanent obstruction, atrial fibrillation or left bundle branch block. The improvement observed during follow-up is always greater as a real remodeling of the myocardium seems to occur with ventricular dilatation and/or septal

However, the position of the atrial, and above all, of the ventricular pacing catheters is critical as is regulation of the pacemaker which should allow complete ventricular capture with an AV delay allowing good filling. The follow-up of these patients must therefore be regular and the effects on longevity are unknown.
DDD
pacing has also been proposed in dilated cardiomyopathy. The results are contradictory and only very selected cases with left bundle branch block and long PR interval seem justified with, again, optimisation of the pacing sites with high septal or biventricular stimulation. Recurrent atrial tachycardia, special algorithms preventing extrasystoles have been tried with variable results. In cases with inter-atrial block, atrial resynchronisation by bi-atrial stimulation has been assessed with promising results but many technical problems remain unsolved.

The northern gannets (Sula bassanus) nesting on Bonaventure Island, Quebec, were studied from 1968 to 1984 in order to measure environmental contaminant levels and their relationship to productivity. Fresh eggs in 1969 contained a mean DDE level of 18.5 mg kg(-1) and had shells which were 17% thinner than pre-1947 samples. Unhatched eggs in 1969 had no outer calcified layer, a mean thickness 20% less than the pre-1947 mean, and mean DDE concentration of 30.6 mg kg(-1). Significantly higher levels of eight contaminants were measured in unhatched than in fresh eggs collected in 1969. DDE and shell

were also intercorrelated with nine other contaminants; these data strongly implicate toxic chemicals, particularly DDE, as the main cause for the low breeding success of Bonaventure gannets from 1966 to 1974.
