This study was designed to test the effect of natural calcium on the bone loss induced by ovariectomy in rats. Thirty female four-month rats were divided into three groups: sham operated group (Sham), ovariectomized group (OVX) and ovariectomized with calcium supplementation group (OVX + CA). OVX + CA rats were treated with calcium at a dose of 50 mg/kg weight per day for 90 days after surgery. Blood biochemical analysis, bone pathology, bone histomorphometric measurement and bone weight were processed. OVX rats were characterized by

, wormerosion like loss of trabecular bones, decreased volume of cancellous bone, increases in osteoblast index and osteoclast index, decreases in wet, dry and ash weights of left femur, and decreases in contents of calcium and phosphorus of bones. Treatment of OVX + p6 rats with calcium provided complete protection against bone loss and significantly depressed bone turnover. Our results indicate that natural calcium is effective in prevention of osteopenia in ovariectomized rats. The authors believe that the main mechanism of calcium against bone loss exists in correction of minus calcium balance, and depression of high bone turnover, especially the absorption action of osteoclasts.

Using histopatholoical method, we investigated the bone histomorphometric changes in ovariectomied goats at different time courses. Eight goats, female, aged one and a half years, were randomly divided into two groups, the control and the ovariectomy (OVX). Iliac crest biopsies were separately processed before ovariectomy and at 60 days, 120 days and 180 days after ovariectomy. The histomorphometric changes were observed. It was found that the bone structure in trabecular bone remained relatively constant in the control group throughout the whole study. In contrast, the trabecular quantity was slightly decreased and the trabeculae were disconnected in OVX at 60 days after ovariectomy. The bone structure was characterized by the
thinning
of the trabeculae, the further discontinuance and quantity loss of trabeculae, and the anlargement of marrow cavity at 120 days to 180 days after ovariectomy. Apparently, these bone structural changes manifested with typical osteopenia pathological changes. Our results may serve as a basis for the design of further studies using OVX goat as an animal model for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

The major components of basement membrane including laminin and type IV collagen were studied by immunohistochemistry in 20 gingival specimens from patients with moderate to severe adult periodontitis and 10 normal gingival specimens combing with electron microscopic and PAS analysis. The results showed that laminin and type IV collagen were both present and stained with a continuous liner pattern in oral sulcular epithelium of the normal gingivae, while the pocket epithelial alterations of the periodontitis occurred, which included

, interruption, partial or complete absence of basement membrane involving one or more rete pegs and fragmentations. All these alterations may play an important role in the pathogenesis of adult periodontitis.

The present study investigated the rheological properties of polysaccharides (HBSS, CHSS, DASS, CASS) sequentially extracted from Polygonatum cyrtonema
Hua
. The monosaccharide, uronic acid, total carbohydrate, protein content of four polysaccharides were analyzed. The total carbohydrate content of PCHPs (HBSS, CHSS, DASS, and CASS) were 78.39, 71.86, 69.99 and 73.73% respectively, containing Rha, Ara, Man, Gal besides uronic acid and protein. The non-Newtonian fluidic nature of PCHPs was affected by the types of polysaccharides, concentration, temperature, pH, types and concentration of salt ions. Specifically, the apparent viscosity of four PCHPs solutions at 1%(w/w) concentration were shown as CHSS>HBSS>CHSS>CASS with increased concentration and shear
thinning
phenomenon and decreased system temperature. Subsequently, the apparent viscosity of four PCHPs at pH 10 or pH 4 were lower than that at pH 7. The Na
+
increased the apparent viscosity of HBSS at increasing concentrations, while, decreased for remaining fractions with increasing Na
+
concentration. Moreover, higher Ca
2+
concentration was inversely proportional to apparent viscosity of four PCHPs. The oscillatory rheological properties showed that linear viscoelastic region of PCHPs was 1-4% which resulted into viscoelastic material. HBSS, DASS and CASS at 0.1%(w/w) showed more viscous behavior at low frequency and enhanced elastic property with the increasing oscillation frequency.
